Stable URL http://www.jstor.org/stable/2381030 The first and most obvious thing has, of course, to do with the weapons, with the combination of the massiveness and the necessary indiscriminancy of the destructiveness that would result. There would be no identifiable battlegrounds or individuals doing battle - there could not be any, even residual, descriptive sense to a differentiation between combatants and noncombatants or between combat zones and military bases, on the one hand, and hospitals, schools, places of worship, and homes, on the other.
