Emergency Management Institute offers Continuity of Operations training course
IAEM
FEMA's Emergency Management Institute will hold a three-day training course for government employees who manage Continuity of Operations (COOP) Programs from March 3-5, 2015. The course, known as "E0548 Continuity of Operations Planning Program Manager Train-the-Trainer," is recommended for federal, state, local, tribal and territorial government employees who are responsible for managing COOP programs within their government agencies. The COOP course is based on the guidance to Federal Executive Branch departments and agencies for developing COOP Programs, and is designed to refresh experienced practitioners and instructors on the methodology and techniques of COOP. Course objectives include defining COOP, explaining the benefits and elements of developing a viable continuity program, and identifying the processes, resources and tasks necessary to implement and manage a successful program. Participants must have knowledge of the COOP Programs and Federal Continuity Directives 1 and 2. Participants must also complete IS0547a, "Introduction to Continuity of Operations," prior to attending this course. The registration deadline for the COOP training course is Jan. 6, 2015. For additional information, contact Course Manager Dan Lubman.

When it comes to acts of God, 2014 wasn't a particularly active year. No powerful hurricane struck the U.S. like Sandy in 2012 or Katrina in 2005. Tame tornadoes: Quietest 3 years for twisters on record
USA Today
The U.S. experienced fewer tornadoes in the past three years than any similar span since accurate records began in the 1950s. Yet meteorologists aren't sure exactly why. As this year comes to a close, about 150 fewer damaging tornadoes than average have hit the U.S., according to data from the Storm Prediction Center. Explanations for the decrease in twisters the past three years range from unusual cold to unusual heat, or just coincidence. READ MORE

Sandy Recovery

(New) New Disaster Assistance Resource

FEMA's Disaster Assistance Improvement Program (DAIP) has released a new website (DisasterAssistance.gov) to help survivors navigate the disaster recovery process. DAIP helps survivors by shortening the time required to apply for assistance and reducing the number of forms that need to be completed. Survivors can also upload documents; check the status of their application, access information and resources, all through the website. On DisasterAssistance.gov, survivors can:

  • Find more than 70 forms of assistance from 17 federal agencies;

  • Get the latest information on declared disaster such as wildfires, hurricanes, floods and earthquakes;

  • Find information about evacuating; accessing shelter, food, water and medical services; and assistance locating loved ones and pets;

  • Locate local resources in and around the whole community; and

  • Share resources via social media.

Visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov today and check out the information available. Spread the word to your loved ones, and be prepared to know where to find assistance before a disaster happens!

(New) New Registry Study Finds Increased Injuries after Hurricanes

Survivors of the World Trade Center disaster who lived in the Tri-State area during Hurricane Sandy experienced multiple types of injuries.

Registry researchers sent surveys to 8,870 enrollees living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut five months after the storm. Among the 4,435 respondents who lived in flooded areas, 10 percent reported injuries, and nearly three quarters of them had more than one injury. The greatest number of injuries occurred among people who attempted clean-up or repair work in a damaged or destroyed home. The most common injuries were arm/hand cuts and back strain. The risk of injury was greater among those who had more flooding in their homes, whether or not they evacuated. The highest percentage of injuries, about 39 percent, was among responders who evacuated by walking or swimming. Hurricane preparation and messages to warn people about the potential for injury during evacuation and clean-up or repair might help reduce the amount and severity of injuries after a hurricane.

NYDIS - NYC Sandy Unmet Needs Roundtable Emergency Heat Program

The Fall/Winter Emergency Heat program is designed to, on an emergency basis, fix Sandy- impacted homeowners' furnace/heating, to prevent utility shut-off and/or to secure fuel deliveries. Any current New York City homeowner who is in Superstorm Sandy Disaster Case Management (DCM) qualifies, regardless of FEMA approval or immigration status. Any DCM can call NYDIS to request assistance with an emergency-heat need, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. A contractor will be dispatched within 12 hours, with the bill to be paid that same day.  DCMs will have three business days to submit the client's data and budget demonstrating Sandy-related unmet needs (budgets do not need to demonstrate sustainability for emergency assistance). For more information, email NYDIS here. To download or view poster.

OEM is looking to build a team of trained individuals who may be called upon to volunteer at one of these CDP sites during an emergency response. NYC OEM will be hosting monthly CDP trainings for interested volunteers from January to June 2015. You only have to attend ONE session. Event is from 6:30pm-8:30pm.
