A History of Kilmihil

Kilmihil has changed considerably since Samuel Lewis described it in 1837 as a small hamlet containing 79 people. The village now has a population of over 300. The parish of Kilmihil became a separate Roman Catholic division, separating from the parish of Kilmacduane, in 1848. About 120 children were educated in two private schools in 1837. One hundred and fifty years later over 200 pupils are educated in four National Schools.

'Kilmihil or Kilmichael, a parish in the Barony of Cloderalaw, County of Clare and Province of Munster, 8 miles from Kildysart, on the road from Kilrush to Ennis, containing 3,794 inhabitants of which number 79 are in the hamlet. It comprises 8089 statute acres about two thirds of which consist of arable land of medium quality and the remainder of mountain pasture. There is also a considerable portion of waste and bog. Fairs are held in Kilmihil on May 19th, July 18th and September 29th and a court for the Manor of Crovreahan is occasionally held in Kilmihil by the seneschal in which small debts are recoverable. The parish is in the diocese of Killaloe, the rectory is impropriate in the representatives of Lord Castlecoote and John Scott Esq. and the vicarage forms part of the union of Kilfarboy. The tithes amount to £192 of which £62-15s-41/2d is payable to John Scott Esq. and the remainder to the Vicar. In the Roman Catholic divisions it is the head of a union or district which also comprises the parish of Kilmacduane. About 120nm children are educated in two private schools. The ruins of the old church still remain in the burial ground.'

In April 1920, after Sunday mass, an attack took place on the R.I.C. patrol in the village of Kilmihil. A local man, John Breen, was shot dead. Sergeant Carrol, R.I.C. was also killed and Constable Collins was severely wounded. Several civilians were injured in a conflict between police and people. There are reports of panic as men, women and children fled in all directions. John Breen was aged 22. He became a member of the Volunteers in 1917, with the formation of the Kilmihil Company. He became one of its first officers. A monument to his memory has been erected in Kilmihil.  

Knockalough is a lake of 2.33 acres and lies 1 mile to the east of the village. It has been partly developed as a recreational and picnic area. The very attractive wooded island in the lake is believed to have been a crannog or lake-dwelling. The remains of a fortified dwelling can be observed on a small island. Tradition says that it was one of the castles of Turlogh Roe MacMahon, a chieftain well known by tradition as "Turlogh Roe, the liar and deceiver, who by one stroke killed his wife and child."

St. Michael's Shrine is still a revered spot in Kilmihil today. The Church Ruin in the cemetery was originally the medieval parish church. In 1632 Mariana MacGorman dreamed on three occasions that St. Michael the Archangel appeared to her and directed her to go to his church at Kilmihil and dig for his well at a little distance, where she should find some reeds growing.

The MacGorman stronghold once stood in the middle of a broad marshy valley near a little stream running westwards through Cahermurphy lake. When the original earthworks were built the valley was probably a large shallow lake. Only the north-west corner remains. The work is unique in Clare, and only for its sloping site is closely similar in plan to certain early Norman earthworks, with a square bailey and low motte castle. It may have been laid out by the MacGormans from their recollection of some such structure in Leinster. The Macgorman fled from Leinster in the twelfth century and settled within the area covered by the parishes of Kilfarboy, Kilmurry Ibrickan and Kilmihil. Murchadh was succeeded by his son, Cuebha, from whom the descent ran in an unbroken line to Melachlin Dubh MacGorman, the Chief, in 1498, from whom all the landowners of the later family were derived. His grandson, Domhnall, is said to have built the castle of Cahermurphy, though it may be far older than this. The family kept themselves apart from the crimes and petty wars of Thomond. They "nourished poets and fed the poor for 400 years". Daniel and Mahone MacGorman of Cahermurphy took an active part in the siege of Tromra Castle in 1642 but the family was still in possession of Cahermurphy in 1655. By 1675 Viscount Clare held Cahermurphy and other surrounding lands. Cahermurphy was confiscated again in 1688 and sold to Francis Burton, Charles Mac Donnell and Nicholas Westby. The MacGormans continued to live in Drumellihy.

Cahermurphy Stone Fort gave its name, the caher or fort of Murchadha, to the area. Situated in a commanding position at the northern end of the valley on a steep green hill, one of the outposts of the plateau from Mount Callan, it was a stronghold which could resist almost any enemy.

Castlepark House to the north of the old castle is a nineteenth-century house built on the site of an older house of the same name. It was here that Thomas the Chevalier O'Gorman was born in 1732.

Hurley) has traced it to Scandinavia, and since that region was more or less the home of the Angles who centuries ago invaded the shores of the British Isles, the suggestion is not beyond the

bounds of possibility.
Suppose it to say for our present purpose that it is by no means a common name in Ireland, and still more uncommon in England.
It is heartening however to observe that the present generation (1980) hold excellent promise for its continuity.

Anne married Pat Lernihan (Patheen Porick) and went to live in that part of Leborn called the "Laskin."

Catherine married Pat Whelan from Shragh who came to live in their house in Shyan hence the change of name.
Catherine and Pat Whelan had three children. Lawrence, May, and Micko.

Tom Paud's brother was married to a girl named Kelly  here again there were probably several children, but we have no record except for two. Maria who did not marry. Johnny who married Margaret Kelly from Clonreddan Coorastare. There were children of this marriage but they all died in infancy.
When eventually Johnny and Margaret were no longer able to carry on the farm they handed it over to John Finucans (or Finucane) a grandson of the aforesaid Bridget Anglim who had married a Finucane in Lower Shyan. Again the name Anglim was displaced, this time by the name of Finucane.

Johnny and Mary had seven children.

Patrick  married first, Maria Lerniher, 2nd Mary Corry.

Margaret married Tom Lernihan known as Tom Donald. Their place was later sold to Matt Cunningham and again sold to Downes.

Honora married Tom Duggan Lissenair Cooraslove.

Bridget married Johnny Lernihan (Johnny Jimmy) and lived in the

place now occupied by Martin McMahon and Joan Lernihan.

Catherine married Patrick Conway Cloniva, Cork.

Maria went to America and married a man named Breen whose family came from Kiltumper.

Note: the name "Darby" keeps cropping up at intervals. Possibly Johnny had a twin brother of that name and perhaps too, it was his father's name whose wife may have been Breen from Sorrel Island.

The Gaelic translation of Darby is supposed to be Diamuid. It is associated with the name Jeremiah.

Patrick Anglim and Maria Lernihan [Chart A-1]
First marriage. Patrick married Maria Lernihan from the "village" (This lady would have been an aunt of Johnny's who married Margaret Conway). Maria died while still young leaving two

daughters Delia and Maria, both of them died as children.

Second marriage. Patrick Anglim and Mary Corry. Mary Corry was from Clohanemore Cork. Her father Johnny was known as Corry Mor. His neighbours, though not a near relative, was called Corry Brig.

Johnny Mor comes across to us as a very much down to earth person who I think did not suffer fools gladly! It must be said to his credit that his wife Susan Cullinan never got the rough edge of his tongue. She was a very gentle person and her soothing "Johnny Agri" approach acted like a balm on his troubled spirit. Johnny had the Irishman's love of horses. He could spend hours

discussing their "five (or fine) points". The story goes that an artless little grand child of 10 (Susan Anglim) having listened to these discussions night after night (probably when she should have been doing her homework) fell into the awful trap of hoping to join the conversation by adventuring to remark "Grandad has that horse been sparin'?" Grandad nearly fell off his chair! and I don't suppose Susan repeated her question!

Susan Cullinan, Johnny's wife was born in paradise (could one find a better place?) it was while living for a brief period with her uncle in Caherculla that the MATCH was made for her and

Johnny.

Johnny and Susan had a large family of eight children.John, Michael, Patrick, Honora, Johanna, Mary, Catherine, and Bridget.

Mary Anne who did not marry. She lived with Micho. father of Martin, Flan, John, Mary, Anne, and Margaret.

Micko married Ellen Killeen.

Michael joined the Royal Irish Constabulary and married Hannah Gallway from Listowel, Co. Kerry. They had four children. John, David, Mary and Joan.

The boys have passed away.

Patrick Emigrated to America where he joined the City Police. He had two children John and Margaret. John became a priest and later had the title of Monsignor. Sad to say at a comparatively early age he lost his eyesight. His sister Margaret devoted her life to caring for him.

Honora. Married Johnny Mullins a near neighbor. They had seven children. Patrick, John, Michael, Susan, Margaret, Mary and Nora. All have passed away with the exception of Mary who entered the Convent of the Faithful Companions and now lives at the "Poles" Convent Ware Herts [sic]. Her name in religion is Sister Mary Josephine. Johanna and Catherine went to America. Johanna married a Duggan from dissenaio [sic] no relation just a marriage connection.

Catherine did not marry.

Bridget married John Ryan, son of Martin Ryan of Castlepark. They lived in the original home of the Ryans in Coryorgg  (Joe Ryan, Kilmihill was John's brother).

Bridget and John Ryan had six children. Martin, Michael, Johnny and Patrick. Mary Ann and Margaret. Mary Anne married John McDermott of Kilmarduane and came to live there. Mago married a man named Brew from near Kilrush.

Martin, Michael and Patrick went to America. Martin's two sons were "called to the bar" and are very successful lawyers. Johnsey inherited his father's place and married Mary Ann Ayres. They have no family.

Susan, Kathy and Nora went to America.

Susan married Jim Hurley from Mountscott. Jim was a cousin of Bridget Kelly that married John Corry another marriage connection only. Susan and Jim had four children . Mary,

Margaret, Susanna and after an interval of 10 years Jim. All three girls are married. To date Jim has not "popped the question".

Kathy married Alexander Cummings of Scottish origin. Born a non Catholic he was received into the Church before they were married  He was an excellent Catholic, husband and father. They had four children. George, Jim, Mary, and Patricia. Jim and Mary did not marry.

Nora. married John Hickey from Brisble Cooraclare. They had four children. John, Jim, Bernard and Joan. John married Marjorie Hillock. They have no family. Jim married Anna Joyce (of Irish origin). They have seven children. John, Jim, Michael, Mary Ellen, Kathy, Loretta and Noreen.

Michael got a scholarship to America's famous Naval College West Point [sic]. He has done remarkably well and will be graduating this year 1980. the other members of the family have

been quite successful.

Bernard. Married Frances Connolly. They have three boys. Patrick, Joseph, and Matthew. Joan married George Gallagher. They have three children. Brian, George, and Noreen.

Delia married Mattie Lernihan, otherwise known as "the Colonel"

Patrick died of diphtheria at about the age of 16. Johnny inherited his Uncle Jer's place and married Mary Ann Eagan from "The Hand". They have three children. Maureen, Matt and John

Francis. Michael joined the Irish Civil Guards and for many years has been stationed in Galway. He married Birdie McNamara from Ennis. Birdie is a trained nurse. They have seven

children.

Thomas Lernihan married Nora Dillon Kant and went to live there Nora is also a near relative of Bridget Kelly, John Corry's wife. Thomas and Nora have no family.

Mary  Trained for nursing in London and worked there for eight years. She then married P.J. Keane (Tony's son). They have four They have four children.

Thomas  still at college.

Bernard  working at Shannon airport, recently married (15/3/1980)

to Mary Bernadette Corry from Ennis.

Geraldine  not very strong.

Joseph Still at school and likely to be the farmer of the family.

Matthew generally known as "Junior" inherited his father's place. He married Mary McInerney from Shragh. They have four children Kevin, Bresa, Oliver and Margaret Anne.

Junior and Anne have a happy outlook on life. They work very hard but they are always cheerful and very welcoming towards the other members of the family who love to visit their old home.

Kathleen  went to America and found a "home away from home" with her aunt Nora (Mrs. Hickey). She is still very closely related with this family who look upon her as one of themselves. She married David McCarthy (of Irish origin tho' some generations removed). They have four children. Joseph, Johnny, Eileen and Michael. All four have been well educated at much personal cost to their parents who were determined that their children should have a good Catholic education even tho' this entailed paying high school fees right through their school lives.

Joan married Martin McMahon from Gower Coorailare.

Martin inherited his aunt's place in Leibrin. They live in the house where Bridget Anglim who was married to Johnny Jimmy lived formerly.

Joan and Martin have one son Brian Martin.

Joseph probably emigrated.

Minnie was the youngest of Patrick Anglim and Mary Corry's family. She was just two months old when her father died. At the age of 18 she entered with the Sisters of Mercy in Hardinge St. London E.1. She is the only living member of her immediate family. She is now 77 and like Johney Walker still going strong! Her name in Religion is Sister Mary Perpetua otherwise "Auntie Minnie".

Arthur O'Donnell and Mary Corry [Chart A 3].
Patrick Anglim died at the early age of 47. Some years later, Mary, his widow, married Arthur O'Donnell from Dunmore Doonbeg. All the O'Donnells in Doonmore at one time professed to being Protestants. It may well be that. Their forebears were "Soupers". Of worldly goods they had an abundance.The legend of "Protestant" was little more than a veneer and there is no trace of it left in succeeding generations. The very home where Arthur was born, and which eventually was given to his niece Louisa Kelly who married Martin Hayes from Kilmarley Ennis has produced two priests Father Cyril and Virian Hayes now working for the glory of God in Scotland.

Arthur and Mary had two children. Margaret Anne and Arthur. In 1929 Margaret Anne entered the Order of St. Joseph and spent the rest of her life in Australia. Her name in Religion was Sister

Mary Felicitas (Saints Perpetua and Felicitas were twin martyrs who gave their lives for Christ in Carthage North Africa about the year 203 AD. "Maggie Anne" as she was affectionately known by all, died on January 14, 1975. RIP.

The name O'Donnell stood young Arthur, Attie, as we call him, in good stead. Closely besides his grandfather's place in Dunmore there was another family of the name which consisted of two

bachelors and two spinsters. Anxious that the name would not die out Attie was invited to make his home with them on the understanding that he would one day be the heir. Things seemed to

work out according to plan, Attie did in fact inherit a very good farm. He married Anna Downes from Dery and they had 6 children.

Mary lives in Dublin and is married to Brian Mulvarey a commercial artist. Mary has two girls, Tara and Kera.

Margaret married Lian Fergusson a farmer I think? and lives at Dunsaney Killen Co.. They have three children.

Joseph is married at home and works at his father's farm.

Arthur is an electrician working at Kilkee. He is married.

Susan works for Aer Lingus and is based in Dublin, th' much of her time is spent in the air. She thoroughly enjoys life.

Anna married Albert Morrisey from near Mullagh. they live at Shannon as Albert's work is there. Their daughter, Susan Olivia arrived a few months ago.

(we seem to favour the title). They have ten children. Patrick, Johnny, Michael, Thomas, Mary, Kathleen, Joan, Jeremiah, Matthew and Joseph.

Patrick joined the Irish Civil Guards and has lived and worked in Galway for many years. In 1960 he married Grace O'Mullery a teacher. They have three children. Mary Barbara, Sean and Coln. After 13 years of happily married life Grace died.

Some years later Patrick married her sister Eileen, who during the intervening years had been all that a mother could be to Grace's children. There are no children of this second marriage.

Joe is a successful farmer who has worked untiringly at improving the house and land at home in Shyan. In this effort, he has had the whole hearted support of Mary who is a most devoted wife and

loving mother.

John Joe is a true chip off the old block! The door is always OPEN for the "has beens” who turn up at regular intervals to check on what is going on at the ROAD!

Mary married Michael O'Grady of Lower Shyan (son of Paddy Lattie) 1980. To date there are three children of this marriage (1980). Gerard, Marie and Aine (or Ann ?). Mary and Mich all (or Michael) have quite a large farm but the running of it entails much hard work for both of them. Michael's parents are still with them and have been a tremendous help to Michael and Mary.

Lives in Dublin. He holds a key position, being a member of the executive with a very reputable building firm.In 1968 he married Deirdee Hutchinson from Foxrock Co. Dublin. Michael and Deirdre have four children. Peter John, Daragh, Siobahn, and Dominic Martin. Deirdre is a highly qualified teacher and for the first few years of her married life she followed that profession. The arrival of children meant that for some time, at least, she would have to forego this work, much as she enjoyed it  she will probably get back to the classroom in time to come.
James [Chart A 1].
The youngest member of John and Susan Anglim's family is a very successful businessman. he is a well skilled artisan and a master of his own affairs. Horse speculation is a secondary interest of

his and here too he has done well. He married Marjorie Fitzgerald from Woodstock Caorigtwohill Co. Cork. Marjorie is an SRN who for some time worked in the Maker Hospital, Dublin. Jim and Marjorie live in Dundrun, Co. Dublin.
