Petrucelli, now a Westbrook resident, graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School and received a degree in biology from Smith College. Core Power is designed to strengthen abdominals and back and includes both abs-focused power yoga poses and variations of muscle-toning moves. It includes: fat-burning cardio; muscle-building resistance; and core-strengthening and stability training. The program uses body weight, fitness steps, stability balls, medicine balls and resistance tubing for a fun, total-body workout!

Menendez is an energetic individual who believes in living an active and healthy lifestyle. She enjoys sharing fitness and motivation with others through group exercise. Her instructing journey began four years ago when she was asked to instruct water aerobics classes for her local YMCA. Last winter, she received her kettlebell instructor certification and began teaching classes through Gorham Adult Education and the YMCA at Pineland. Kettlebells Fitness Class

Jeni Menendez's Kettlebell Fitness class will run every Monday and Wednesday from 7-8 pm in the Westbrook Community Center Media Center.
Kettlebells are cast iron weights, ranging from 5 lbs to over 100 lbs, shaped like a ball with a handle for easy gripping. Kettlebells offer a different kind of training using dynamic moves targeting almost every aspect of fitness – endurance, strength, balance, agility and cardio endurance. People love it because it's challenging, efficient and you only need one piece of equipment. The idea is to hold the kettlebell in one or both hands and go through a variety of swings, presses or pulling motions. Some movements have you changing the weight from hand to hand as the weight swings up or as you move laterally, requiring you to stabilize the body and engage the core in a whole

new way. Other moves require power from the legs and hips to move the weight, giving you integrated whole body movements that are often missing with other types of training.

The drop-in fee for Kettlebells is just $5 per class, or you can purchase a multiple-session punch pass at a discounted rate. Classes are open to both residents and non-residents. Payment for drop-in participants is due before each class. Cash or checks made out to City of Westbrook are accepted.

Re*Play Gently-Used Sports Gear Store

T

he Westbrook Community Center’s Re-*Play Gently-Used Sports Gear Store is located off the Atrium between the

Gymnasium and the Indoor Pool.

Because many children in Westbrook can’t afford the costs of sports programs and other activities and the gear that's needed to participate, the Re*Play Gently-Used Sports Gear initiative was created in 2010 by the Rielly family to help offset expenses by providing gently-used sports gear at very low costs and funding scholarships to participate.
Here's How it Works:

1. Families donate unneeded, gently-used sports gear to Re*Play

2. Re*Play sells the gear at very low costs

3. Proceeds from sales fund scholarships for Westbrook children to participate in Community Center sports and other activities

Anyone can drop off clean, gently-used sports gear at the Westbrook Community Center main office, located at 426 Bridge Street, Monday-Friday, during regular business hours. NOTE: Please do not drop Re*Play gear in the Re-Sale Thrift Store donation box near the entrance to the office; make sure that you physically hand the gear to a staff member and mention that it's for the Re*Play program. Your support and generosity are greatly appreciated!

Dog Obedience School

Beginning Monday, May 7, certified canine training specialist Christine Kiley, owner of Dogwise Obedience, will be offering a six-week General Dog Obedience Class for local owners and dogs that are at least 16 weeks of age or older. Classes will be held on Monday evenings from 7-8 pm in the Westbrook Community Center Gym. When arriving for class, please park behind the building and enter through the rear doors.

Christine has trained dogs in obedience for most of her life. She is a graduate of the Triple Crown Academy in Houston, TX, where she received her certification as a certified training specialist. Her ultimate goal is to strengthen the bond between dogs and their humans through proven methods of communication. Each one-hour class, will cover basics necessary for a happy dog that's a joy to own.

Using methods of positive reinforcement, your best friend will learn to: walk on a loose leash; come when called; greet people politely; stay in a sit/down position; “go to bed”; “leave it”; ignore pesky or troublesome leash distractions; “look” on request; and do much more! Obedience training serves as the clearest method of communication to strengthen the human/canine bond! Written instructions are provided with each lesson.

Registration Fee: $120 per dog. Payment in full must be received prior to April 16 in order to hold your place. To register, please call Christine directly at 370-8474 or e-mail her at Christine@dogwiseobedience.com. Visit Dogwise Obedience online at http://www.dogwiseobedience.com/.
