2013 Junior Team Tennis in Charles County

A lot of things have occurred in tennis during the 2013 season. The Junior Team Tennis 18 & under Intermediate level team "Red Phoenix" won the local competition with wins over the teams from the LaPlata and Pomfret areas of the county. Competition was great, with every team displaying great tennis skills at their level of competition. Red Phoenix proceeded to the state competition where they played against teams from other parts of the state before being defeated during their semi-final match. It was a great summer season. Players composing the Red phoenix team: Azuri Hughes, Bishop McNamara H.S., Ronald Stith, St. Mary's Ryken H.S., Marshall Parent, H.E. Lackey H.S., Melissa Nelson, H.E. Lackey H.S., Joi Smith, North Point H.S. and Kevin Chen, H.E. Lackey H.S.

During the Fall, at the United States Tennis Association's Annual Award ceremonies, Mai'lin Quinto of Henry E. Lackey was presented the Maryland District Junior Sportsmanship Award. She has become the seventh consecutive junior player to receive this award either from the district or the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section.

The USTA Maryland District also presented Coach Kenneth A. Griffith, Head Tennis Coach at H.E. Lackey with their annual High School Coach of the Year honor. That was soon followed by the Section and the National USTA office in New York with the USTA's No Cut Coach Award, selection to the "All-Star Coaches Team" and the USTA's High School Coach of the Year honors. Not to be outdone, the Tennis Industry Magazine also named Coach Griffith as their 2013 High School Coach of the Year.

While our junior were improving their game, we want to send our kudos to the Charles County Adult women's team who won their local 3.0 league, the District and Sectional titles and went to the National Championships for the first time. Great job ladies!!
