22 July 1870: census book p483B, house 186, family 187, Richmond, Knoxville Township, Ray County, Missouri: William, age 50, farmer, born Tennessee; Nancy, age 40, born Tennessee; William, age 23, farmer laborer, born Tennessee; Mary, age 16, born Tennessee; Cellus, age 14, works on farm, born Tennessee; Pryor, age 12, born Missouri; Isaac, age 10, born Missouri; Alvin, age 9, born Missouri; James, age 7, born Missouri; Elizabeth (Betty), age 2, born Missouri.
19 Feb 1900: died Ray County, Missouri; buried in the old New Garden Cemetery (a Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery), Ray County, Missouri, just off Highway 10, west of Richmond, Missouri, and south of Wood Heights, in Ray County, with his tombstone, and that of his son, Aaron, just inside the cemetery gate. Perhaps the reason that Nancy and William were buried in separate cemeteries is that Nancy died nineteen years earlier than William and, perhaps, William lived his last years with his son, Aaron, as Aaron is buried at the same site as William.
William grew up on his parents' farm (they had extensive holdings) in Powell's Valley, near Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee.
Excerpt from Isaac Yoakum's will, recorded in Powell's Valley, Claiborne County, Tennessee:
“Ninth, I next bequeath to my son, William Yoakum, One Thousand Dollars which is to be paid out of my estate after my death and it is my wish to have the above amount placed in the hands of a guardian to be paid to him as he may need it as I think he would waste it and not make proper use of it. I therefore wish to appoint Isaac Thomas as his guardian.”
Isaac died about the same year that William moved with his family to Missouri and this inheritance may have helped William and Nancy to get started as farmers in Ray County.

Harold M. Yoakum: James “Jim” was a farmer. He and Rosa lived all their lives in Ray County, Missour, and their farm and home of many years is located just north and slightly east of the village of Knoxville, Missouri. The farm is currently (1968) owned by one of James and Rosa's grandsons, who is a son of Claude Yoakum, and the original house is still standing. This is known in the area as the Yoakum Homeplace and is where James in his younger and more prosperous days was noted for his fine horses of Tennessee breeding. The Ray County History Book, published in 1973, shows James in a reproduced photograph pictured on one of these fine horses in front of the Knoxville Hotel. James was a very respected citizen of Ray County, and is remembered as a rather aristocratic and neatly dressed personage, but also very soft spoken and gentle with his family, neighbors, and friends. Most of their children are buried at Bethel Cemetery.
