WHAT IS FOOD?
Figure 5: WHAT IS FOOD
Food is anything that is used to provide nutritious support to the body. It usually comes from plants or animals, and it contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. This substance is absorbed by the living organism and is absorbed by the body's cells in an effort to produce energy, sustain life, or promote growth. Historically, people had access to food in two ways: hunting and gathering, and agriculture. Today, most of the food for human consumption worldwide is provided by the food industry. Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies such as the International Association for Food Protection, the World Resources Institute, the World Food Program me, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Food Information Council. They discuss issues such as sustainability, biodiversity, climate change, a healthy food economy, population growth, water supply, and food security. The right to food is a human right based on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which recognizes “the right to a decent standard of living, including adequate food,” and a fundamental right to freedom from hunger.
Food has two functions, building up the body, and supplying it with force. Substances used as food may be divided into elements which are oxidizable and those conducive to chemical changes. Milk contains all the necessary elements in the best form. The nourishing elements of foods are usually classed under the heads of albuminates, fats, carbo-hydrates, and salts. In regard to the part played by the condiments used in flavoring and seasoning, and such things as tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, etc., little is positively known beyond the fact that some of them are useful in exciting the salivary and alimentary secretions. The amount of food necessary to health and vigor varies with the kind and amount of occupation, the character of the climate, and specifically with the individual. Playfair and Parkes give the following as the average daily allowance of anhydrous food for an adult, in avoirdupois ounces.
Food, substance consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and other nutrients used in the body of an organism to sustain growth and vital processes and to furnish energy. The absorption and utilization of food by the body is fundamental to nutrition and is facilitated by digestion. Plants, which convert solar energy to food by photosynthesis, are the primary food source. Animals that feed on plants often serve as sources of food for other animals. To learn more about the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism, see food chain.
Hunting and gathering, horticulture, pastoralism, and the development of agriculture are the primary means by which humans have adapted to their environments to feed themselves. Food has long served as a carrier of culture in human societies and has been a driving force for globalization. This was especially the case during the early phases of European trade and colonial expansion, when foods such as the hot red pepper, corn (maize), and sweet potatoes spread throughout Europe to Africa and Asia
