Washington, the capital of the United States, is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The district is a piece of land which doesn't belong to any state but to all the states.
Under the Constitution, the federal government is divided into three branches. The legislative power is vested in Congress and made up of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 435 members in the House of Representatives and 100 senators. Each state elects two members of the 100-member Senate.
The executive branch is headed by the President, who proposes bills to Congress, enforces federal laws, serves as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and with the approval of the Senate, makes treaties. President can veto a bill unless Congress by a two-thirds vote shall overrule him.
The vice President, elected from the same political party as the President, acts as chairman of the Senate, and in the event of the death of the President assumes the Presidency. The judicial branch is made up of Federal District Courts, 11 Federal Courts and the Supreme Court. Federal judges are appointed by the President for life. Federal courts decide cases involving federal law, conflicts between citizens of different states. The Supreme court may rule the law to be unconstitutional.
Now about the elections. The President is chosen in nation-wide elections every 4 years together with the Vice-President.
Constitution has been amended 26 times. The Bill of Rights guarantees individual liberties: freedom of speach, religion and so on. Later amendments abolished slavery, granted the right to vote to women and allowed citizens to vote at age 18.
The problems of teenagers
All people have problems. Some of them have many problems, the others have one or two problems only. Young people have as many problems as the grown-ups. It is possible to solve some problems but sometimes we can not solve this or that problem. The first problem is to choose a good friend. I know the proverb "A friend in need is a friend indeed." I agree with it, that's why I try to make friends with merry and true persons. I want to have a friend who understands me. It will be simple and interesting to speak to him or her. I think that young people have problems with their parents. What are they? Sometimes we have different tastes. I like the proverb "There is no accounting for tastes." For example, I go shopping with my mother. She likes this dress but I like that one. My mother wants me to buy this dress. But I am sure, that dress is much to my taste. My parents want me to be a teacher as they are skilled teachers but I have a taste for music, and my dream is to be a composer. Where can we go? What can we do if we have free time? My friend Nastya lives in a village. Her village is far from Moscow. It takes her three hours to go to Moscow. She says that there is nowhere to go and there is nothing to do in her village. There are no clubs, museums, cinemas, parks there. If she wants to go to Moscow it'll take her a lot of money. She can't afford it. It is a problem to get a good education. It is necessary to pay for a good education. I think it is difficult to learn English, for example, without additional classes. I can't enter the Institute without good knowledge. To get it it is necessary to pay for it and have heavy expenses. Many good teachers leave schools because they do not earn enough money. Persons without special experience can't teach the pupils well. I am sure that all teenagers want to have a lot of money to dress well, to go to the theatres, to visit foreign countries, ito eat what they want, to buy books - how can they solve all these problems? They have to earn money. I think it is possible to do it. Some boys wash cars, the others sell newspapers, some of my friends help old persons. Many of my friends have load of care. We have some problems but we are sure that we solve them in a proper way. I think that the young people in other countries have many problems too. I have a pen-friend in Italy. He usually writes that his parents make him to do much house-work. It is stange for us, but my friend Jack from London has his biggest problem — his freckles.
The Renaissance or the revival of learning was the period then european culture was at it's high. It lasted from the 14'th century till 17'th century, and was coursed by complex economic situation and social conditions. The feudal system was been shuttled by the bourgeoisie, thich was getting stronger and stronger. It was more profitable to unite under a single rouler. Absolute monacy came into being. This lead to the forming of nations and the true sense of the world. New social and economic conditions called for the new ideology, because the catholic dogmas didn't correspond to the new trend of life. For this reason in many european countries the protestant religion spread up and national churches were established.
Instead of the blindness demanded by the catholic then appeared a new outlook which was called humanism. The time demanded positive rational knowledge and this demand was fully met: in astronomy by Copernicus, in philosophy by Tomas More, in geography by Columbus, Vaska de Gama and others. Leonardo de Vinci created a new theory of art: "It was the greatest progressive revolution that mankind have so far experienced, a time, which called for "Giants" and produced Giants in power and thought, passion and character in universality and language."
An example of a typical men of the Renaissance period was: the famous Englishmen sir Walter Raleigh, he was a soldier, sailor, explorer, pirate, coloniser, historian, phylosopher and a poet. He was much interested in science and literature. He wrote works of geography and lead expedition to South America. He was an outstanding poet. His poems are full of profound wisdom, written with great elegance of style. He organised of "academy". Christother Marlowe the greatest dramatist (before Shakespear). But one of the greatest men of this period was sir Thomas More.
