Preface

The subject Library and Information Science has a comparatively higher job prospect. After completion of the MLISc Programme with UGC norms one can be absorbed in the job market very easily. This is the reason behind phenomenal growth of the number of students taking admission in the Department of Library and Information Science in different Universities of India. The number of admission seekers is eight or nine times more than the actual seats available and an ever increasing number of students with a first Class career are trying to enter into this department. But for everyone, the qualification of the UGC NET creates a hindrance.

The author of this guide book qualified the NET examination for two times. His success made him think of converting his personal notes, which are mainly based on different articles into online book to help others. He started providing paid access to the online guide book from Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from www.netugc.com website. On September 27, 2011, the author signed a MoU with DVS Publishers, Guwahati and accordingly the online content released in a physical book format. Later on from 29^th December 2011 the online guide book is released as free for all users.

            Though full effort has been given in preparing the book with full perfection, but at the same time, I am quite aware of my limitations. So, I beg pardon for any errors and omissions that may occur with or without my knowledge.

The idea of this guide book is to help the NET aspirants to absorb the gist of “easy readings” on each and every topic of the NET Syllabus. The articles in their totality would definitely enrich the knowledge of the NET aspirants for better understanding of the topics included in the NET syllabus. It will also be a valuable resource for any B.Lib / BLISc / M.Lib. / MLISc student of any Indian university as well as SLET / SET aspirants in LIS.

A short write-up on each and every topic of the NET Syllabus is included in the guide book. Most of the topics are presented according to their place in the NET syllabus. Further, the guide book also includes supplementary materials on the latest developments in the subject (RDA, NLIST, Cloud Computing, NKN, etc), previous years solved papers and some questions and answers in Paper II and III. However, the guide book excluded FID, Library Association (UK), NISSAT, etc. which have dissolved long ago. All included topics are revised annually and released over www.netugc.com website.

            We know that there are many books available in print and many online resources, which you can access freely. Firstly, are you aware of the fact that most of the print edition of a book which you are reading today, the content are of more than five years old? We don’t think you want to be five years backward than your colleague. Secondly, surely there are huge resources available over the web freely, but to have them and arrange them in a way to serve your purpose you have to spend a minimum of one year. Further, in the years to come it will again consume much of your daily time to update it. Now we are doing all these things for you to save your time and make your NET/SET/SLET preparation easy.

Dr. Badan Barman is working as Assistant Librarian in Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University. He is BSc (Botany) from Guwahati College with 14^th Position in 2003, MLISc from the Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University with 1^st position in 2005. He was awarded Ph.D in Library and Information Science by Gauhati University in the year 2011 for his thesis “Web Resouces in Library and Information Science: A Managerial Approach”. He qualified in the UGC NET examination in Library and Information Science of December, 2005 and June, 2006. He was ICSSR, New Delhi Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellow, for a short period. He also worked as a Research Assistant in the ICSSR sponsored research project “Rural Libraries of North East India: A Machine Readable Database” at DLISc, Gauhati University. He is widely known in India and abroad for innovative use of web technologies in Library and Information Science.
