Figure 13: simPower model of diesel generator with synchronous machine using UWM power inverter component
A simple modification of the UWM controller for the microsource was developed to model an external storage device (battery). In this case, the controlled external storage (ES) device was modeled as a microsource whose minimum power, Pmin, was set to a negative value.
4.2: Experimental Comparison of UWM and UND Simulators
Results from the simulation models described in section 4.1 were compared against similar data obtained for UWM’s simulation of their system. Comparisons were made against the stand-alone microsource (ms), externals storage (es), and genset models.
Simulation results for stand-alone components closely followed the UWM test results. Test results from ND’s simulation are shown in the following plots. Simulation results from the simulated mesh microgrid closely followed that of the three test cases provided by UWM. These test cases are itemized below. With each case, we show the “original” results from UWM’s hardware validated simulation against the “comparison” results for UND’s simulation.

additional 4kW lo ad at t = 2.0 seconds
