Len Pasquarelli, Atlanta Journal Constitution: the Falcons signed Buchanan to a four-year, $ 13 million offer sheet… Atlanta is hoping a $ 4 million signing bonus and 1997 base salary of $ 3 million will force Indianapolis to blink. Prorating the bonus over the life of the contract gives Buchanan a '97 salary cap figure of $ 4.0 million. Buchanan will earn a base salary of $ 2 million in each of the final three years of the contract.
Matt Winkeljohn, Atlanta Journal Constitution: Buchanan avoided the franchise tag Wednesday, just 24 hours ahead of the NFL's deadline for teams to apply it, agreeing to a six-year, $36 million contract. The deal included an $8 million signing bonus…

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: very quietly the team extended the contract of underrated fullback Bob Christian several weeks ago, adding two years through the '05 season… Christian got a $600,000 signing bonus but dropped his 2002 base salary from $2 million to $750,000. He can make up the balance in not likely to be earned incentives. The maneuver saved Atlanta $1.1 million this season and $1.8 million for the 2003 season, when Christian's base salary drops from the scheduled $3 million to $1 million. In the years added to the contract, Christian will have base salaries of $1.2 million in 2004 and $1.4 million in 2005. He is also due roster bonuses of $500,000 in each of those seasons.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, AJC: Dunn signed a one-year contract extension --- through the 2008 season --- and turned future earnings into a $2.5 million signing bonus. Per league rules, the salary-cap charge for signing bonuses is prorated over the term of the deal. Dunn, coming off a career-best season in carries (280) and yards (1,416), trimmed almost $3 million off his 2006 cap charge by reworking his contract for a second consecutive season. He will earn $2.7 million this season and is scheduled to make $12.45 million over the next three years. Dunn expressed apprehension late last season about his $8.5 million salary-cap charge for 2006, making him a potential salary-cap casualty. However, president and general manager Rich McKay said the team would do what it had to in order to retain its leading rusher and most recognized humanitarian, hinting at the contract adjustment.
