2.0 INTRODUCTION
As implied earlier, newspapers have been universally accepted as one of the most dependable and convenient instrument of communicating information ever devised by man. Information is an important element in every sector of life, be it social, economic, political, educational, industrial and technical development. In the present world, information is a very valuable commodity as it has a great influence on public perception.
It seems that the important goal of newspaper publication is to provide the simplest dose of information that will guide the people in taking decisions about events and issues that affect their lives. By common definition of activities, newspapers scan the environment and report the information gathered as news.
No wonder Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye (2007) defines news as what people want to know, ought to know and must know as a Commercial proposition. This, according to Akinfeleye, implies that even advertisement contains elements of news, therefore underlying the importance of Newspapers.
According to Sumit Thakur (2013), children in the modern age have no idea how reading newspapers is important. He identifies Newspapers as a general knowledge source, vocabulary Teacher, Study and enlightenment Portal, as well as an Entertainer with stories, gossips and, much more details to pass the time.
In this chapter the study looked at various literatures that relates to identifying the role of newspapers to children; reading patterns and content preference of children in a digital age; and their perception about specialized newspapers published to their preference.
