Annual Concert

with Abercraf and Caehopkin schools

at the

Abercrave Welfare Hall

on

Wednesday, 29th February

Chairwoman’s Welcome

Welcome to our concert and thank you for your support this evening. We are delighted that pupils from Abercraf and Caehopkin schools have joined us once again. While this may be the last time that we perform with these schools individually, we are sure that we will enjoy a productive relationship with Ysgol y Cribarth and look forward to many more concerts at the Welfare Hall in Abercrave.

The Band continues to offer free instrument use and free tuition to members – making sure that access to the exciting world of music is available to all. Maintaining the Band costs a lot of money, so we’d like to thank everyone who supported us while we were fundraising over the Christmas period.

The Band’s Musical Director is Alex Parker. Alex is 20 years old and has been conducting the Band since April last year.

He plays the soprano cornet at Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen Band and some of their members are also playing with us in tonight’s concert.
Alex’s time with the Band has been mutually beneficial. We have benefited from his enthusiasm and commitment and he has benefited from the opportunity to improve his patience – which anyone who’s sat in a car with him will know is often in short supply!

Many thanks to the Abercrave Welfare Hall and to pupils and staff at Abercraf and Caehopkin schools for making tonight’s concert possible.
Refreshments will be available in the interval and the raffle will be drawn.
Ysgol Abercraf
Abercraf is a small community school that serves the village of Abercraf.

We have 58 pupils on register and a successful playgroup that has twenty-four 2-3year olds regularly attending.  The school has a focus on developing Music and PE and works hard to encourage the learner to develop skills in a wide variety of areas.

The school is a caring and safe environment for learners and wrap around care is encouraged through a well attended Breakfast Club, After School Club, and Mother and Toddler groups.

Sadly, the long history of Abercraf School comes to an end in July with closure following a Local Authority Modernisation process.  However, a new 180 place School, Ysgol Y Cribarth will open in September which will serve our community.  This is an exciting new resource for the locality and will ensure quality facilities for our learners.  I'm sure parents, governors, staff and children will respond positively in this time of great upheaval and change to embrace the future. The new school is here to serve the community so let’s make the best use of it.

The school choir is looking forward to the Ystrad Band concert tonight and will be singing "I Will Follow Him" from Sister Act, “Tale As Old As Time” from Beauty and the Beast and two traditional African Songs - Tongo, and Boomalena.

We hope you enjoy the performance as much as us.  The Choir has enjoyed preparing for it.  I’d like to thank Mrs Natalie Jones and Mrs Sue Martin for all their hard work in preparing the Choir for this performance.

Random Facts and Information…
Abercraf and Caehopkin schools have both taken part in seven of the Band’s concerts since they became a regular fixture in our calendar in 2000.
A 15 square-foot poster for tonight’s concert was displayed in the foyer of the Tesco store in Ystradgynlais. Did you see it?
Both of the Band’s soloists share the same surname. Phil plays the flugel horn and his father and his son both play the cornet in the Band. Angharad is our principal cornet player and she also conducted the Band when we won at the Cardiff National Eisteddfod in 2004. In an attempt to reduce confusion over names in the future, Angharad has kindly agreed to get married in September.

Ysgol Caehopkin

Caehopkin School aims to help children develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become useful, caring members of an ever changing society. We attempt to do this within a happy, stable and safe environment, which encourages progress and promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural development during the various stages of childhood.

The school is very aware of the individual needs of children and the need to challenge their interests in order to make learning as effective and enjoyable as possible. Good relationships between children, teachers, parents and the local community are encouraged in order to foster positive attitudes in our children towards learning and their environment as well as each other.

Pupils are expected to learn and adopt high standards of behaviour and dress and to be courteous and considerate at all times. They are expected to work hard, to enjoy school life and to observe school rules with regard to behaviour.

Today the school is a thriving village school of approximately 50 pupils aged between 4-11 years and while the outside still dates from 1914 the inside is totally 21st Century with an abundance of modern facilities and equipment. The school has a long and interesting history, but will close at the end of the summer term in accordance with Powys Council’s schools modernisation programme.
Caehopkin School would like to thank the Ystradgynlais Public Band for inviting us to join them for their concert once again this year. This is a particularly poignant year as it is the last time we will be joining them as Caehopkin School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the pupils past and present and their parents for all the support they have shown us.

Random Facts and Information…
Videos of the Band posted to YouTube have been viewed over 260,000 times across at least 180 countries worldwide!
The Band’s famous alumni include Wyn Davies of ‘Only Men Aloud’ who performed many times at the Abercrave Welfare Hall and Vernon Kerswell whose Extreme Fliers business took him onto the BBC’s ‘Dragons Den’ in 2009.

Ystradgynlais Band
The Ystradgynlais Band was formed in the nineteenth century, though the earliest surviving records date back to 1903. As well as arranging local concerts such as this one, we support other community organisations such as the hospital and nursing homes. We take part in activities organised by Communities First and will be taking part in the Welsh Night at the Ystradgynlais Welfare Hall on 28th March. The Band competes regularly at the Brangwyn Hall (where we will next perform on 18th March) and the National Eisteddfod, which is broadcast live on S4C. We’re a registered charity and none of our players, tutors, conductors or administrators receive any remuneration from the Band.
Recently, we’ve been concerned that there are limited opportunities for people to learn to play a musical instrument in the local area. Tuition at Maesydderwen costs £11 for a half hour lesson. Add on the cost of an instrument and music and you’d be looking at a bill of at least £800 in the first year – making this a very expensive new skill to acquire in the current financial climate. With this in mind, the Band are determined to offer free tuition, free membership and free instrument use to anyone who’d like to become a member.
Learning is not limited to children - it’s never too late to start! Several members of the Band started to learn to play at the same time as their children and we have older members who were interested in pursuing a musical hobby for the first time later on in life. Anyone who’d like to find out more can call our secretary, Jeff, on 01792 863733 or look us up online at ystradband.com, where you can also find details about when and where we meet.

Help us to keep music making free…
If you shop online (most stores participate, from Tesco and Argos to e-bay and Amazon), registering at easyfundraising.org.uk/ypb can earn us a percentage of the value of your goods – with no extra cost to you. There are often vouchers and discount codes on the site that can save you money as well!
Replacing your usual search engine with ypb.easysearch.org.uk is another way you can help us to earn money by going about your everyday activities. Search results are provided by major search engines, so you can find what you’re looking for while helping to support us.
Vodafone’s free ‘Just Text Giving’ service allows you to donate by text message. There’s no charge for the text and Gift Aid can also be claimed on top of any donations. This works by texting HORN00 £x to 70077 (with x being a value between 1 and 10).

The Band took a few more tentative steps into the 21st Century last week with the creation of our new facebook page.
Visitors to the page will already be treated to an extensive gallery of photos. Many of these are of recent activities but our archive collection dates back to 1904.
We will update this page alongside our website with information about the Band as it happens. Please take a look when you’re next online.
