Speed Skate New Brunswick Athlete Development Committee

Conference Call Minutes – February 4th, 2009

On Call: Ginette Basque, Darren Oakes, Sacha LeBlanc, Mary McCarthy, Carl Tremblay, Ed Trippel, Steve Harris (Chair). Regrets: Peter Steele.
The meeting was called to order at 9:20 p.m.
The Provincial Team Policy was tabled for discussion. It was decided to make no further changes to the Guide and to forward to the board for approval. Motion: Ginette/Carl. Passed unanimously.
The Discussions noted that:

  • The NB team for nationals will be finalized following the Harold Joyce met in Fredericton on March 15th.

  • The planned nationals camp would now have to be re-thought

  • A request be made to the Fredericton club to incorporate into the HJ event 333m races for midgets who want to skate them and 666m races for juveniles who want to skate them in an effort to achieve their times for nationals.

  • That a request be made to competitions to provide additional opportunities to skate these distances in designated meets after Christmas in future calendars. Campbellton, Harold Joyce and the Codiac were cited.

  • The Provincial Team Policy and the Canada Games Guide must be translated for our Francophone skaters.

  • The Policy states that the Committee be allowed to redistribute funds within its budget and retain underspent funds for future years. The Chair noticed that the latter had not been the case in the previous year.

With regards to the planning for nationals, the chair suggested that he work with the technical director to review options for nationals including on-site ground transportation, hotel rates, the location of local amenities and transportation to Peterborough.

The Christmas provincial camp was discussed. Mary reported that she felt that it was an excellent camp. She also noted that Peter Steele had done a very good job of integrating skaters of various abilities into the training sessions.
The Committee was pleased to see that the number of skaters was high for the camp following previously low numbers. There was some discussion over whether or not New Brunswick skaters should take priority if the advertised maximum number of skaters was reached. It was recognized, however, that PEI skaters had been in regular attendance, even when attendance was low and had registered early, whereas, many New Brunswick skaters had registered late which created the issue. It was agreed to discuss this further at a future face to face meeting.
The issue of midget skaters attending the camp was raised. It was noted that some committee members had received e-mails from parents of NB midgets wondering why some midgets were allowed to attend after the web-site had previously stated juveniles and up. The Committee agreed that we should either stick to the advertised and agreed to rule or make any changes well known to all potential skaters in the future.

The Committee also supported the need to have provincial camps for midget skaters and to include them as much as possible in all activities.

Ginette raised the issue of bilingual capacity in the provincial team program. Some skaters do not have strong English skills and the instructions need to be translated when provided in English. The technical director or other on-ice coaches need to ensure that a bilingual skater can help explain technical details to Francophone skaters, as we would expect if instructions were provided only in French.
The Chair raised the need to develop a process for coach and manager selection for the Canada Games. Darren noted, however, that this responsibility lay with the Coaching Committee. The Chair agreed to contact the chair of the Coaching Committee to alert them of the need to do this prior to March 31st, 2009 as it is needed as part of the Canada Games team plan to be submitted to government as part of the funding submission.
The Canada Games camp schedule was endorsed by the committee. No date had been provided for the SSNB Summer Camp and it was noted that August 15th was a special day for Acadians and that the camp should avoid that day if at all possible.
Mary noted that her daughter Kelly had received a Personal Development Plan from Peter, and was keen to use it, but was not sure quite how to go about this. The Committee felt that part of the testing camp should be to explain how to use the Personal Development Plan. It was also noted that the Committee should develop a tracking process for all the skaters.
The budget was reviewed and it was noted that we were under-budget, but could have more than the budgeted number of skaters attend the 4th Espoir Meet.
The Committee Members gave a brief report on their development programs:
Caraquet: Good numbers going to Codiac, threatened by the introduction of ringette to the region.

Campbellton: Good numbers, hosting nationals in 2010, but will not host their usual December meet.

Codiac: The meet is shaping up, have added quite a number of students to their club.

St. Croix: Numbers o.k., average age is still young, hoping to recruit more skaters, need to retain more after grade 10, happy to see some skaters performing well at eastern Canadians.

Fredericton: Coach Derrick is doing off-ice conditioning before practice on two nights a week, the meet went well,

Saint John: Good numbers in groups 1, 2, 4 and Learn to Skate.

Meeting Adjourned: 10:45p.m.
