The sky is blue – oh, so very blue! – but the water’s hue manages to be even more stunning. The rocky landscape is textured and complex, but it’s the smooth, whitewashed hillside that really stands out against the azure backdrop. This is Santorini. It is so good to be here!
Your tour director will meet you at the airport and you’ll transfer to your hotel. After check-in, settle in for a welcome drink with your fellow travelers and intro to the week’s activities with Linda and your tour escort.
Come evening, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner complete with a famous Santorini sunset. It’s the perfect chance to file away a mental image; sunsets make for wonderful memories!
Dinner DAY 2 ( Sept. 14): An Explosive Muse
Today, we swap the white-and-sapphire scenes of Santorini for the rough terrain and barren moonscapes of an ancient volcano.
After breakfast, we head for the port and embark on a private catamaran cruise. Time to drink in the seascapes – perfect inspiration to develop a palette of collected memories and favorite moments through photographs, sketches and journaling, which can later be incorporated into your “Fragments” project. With magical deep blue waters and impressive red rock formations our journey is sure to stir the imagination. The caldera of Santorini is actually a basin, four miles in diameter which scientists and archaeologists have linked with the myth of Atlantis, a landscape that consist of steel rocks and cliffs that towers above almost touching the sky. As we feast on lunch, we’ll continue to cruise the Caldera before returning to the port and transferring back to our hotel. We’ll spend the balance of the afternoon in the studio. Dinner is at your leisure with free time in the evening to relax, collect memories and enjoy the vibrant hues of a Santorini sunset!
Breakfast, Lunch DAY 3 (Sept. 15): The Inspiration of the Ages
We’re in Greece, the cradle of modern civilization, and here history is one of our greatest inspirations. After breakfast this morning, we’re traveling over land and back through the millennia, to the excavations at Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. Take time to photograph, journal and collect objects to incorporate into your works
On our way back, we’re taking a delicious detour to a Cava Winery, where we’ll taste local wines and sample Greek appetizers. Then it’s back in the studio – the group will break for dinner and if you’re still inspired the studio will be open.
Breakfast, Afternoon Appetizers, Wine-Tasting + Dinner. DAY 4 (September 16): A Castle’s Story
There’s nothing quite like a castle to speak to your soul. Is it the timeworn stones or the shadowed corners? Perhaps it’s the hand-built angles and romantic archways. It’s definitely the stories held within these ancient walls: heartaches and first loves, new life and bittersweet goodbyes. Many lifetimes of them.
Today, we explore the village of Kastro (literally, “the castle”): a medieval town atop a hill, Kastro is an entire village worth of castle. Stroll, look, listen, absorb and collect more memories!
After our journey we’ll settle in for a private regional cooking class. What we make becomes lunch!
Afternoon will be spent in the studio with Dinner at your leisure.
Breakfast, Lunch DAY 5 ( Sept 17): Serenity, Strolls, and Sunsets
In Greece, time moves a bit more slowly than back home. Which is perfect, since journey is about slowing down and savoring the moment – about relaxing and creating!
So today, we enjoy time together in the studio working on our projects.
In the late afternoon, we’ll transfer to the village of Oia to take in the world-renowned sunset of Santorini, as it sets over black volcanic rocks and a cerulean sea.
We’ll stay for dinner in Oia Village.
Breakfast + Dinner DAY 6 (Sept 18 ): Fan Your Artistic Flames
Following breakfast we’ll be back in the studio putting the final touches on our beautiful works of textile art! You will break from lunch and then head on back into the studio.
This evening, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner to reminisce and reflect on our time on this beautiful island. Apochairetismós (αποχαιρετισμός, or farewell), Santorini!
Breakfast + Farewell Dinner. DAY 7 (Sept. 19 ): Departure for Home
We’re sorry to say, today we bid farewell after breakfast. Depart for home – or linger longer and add a few extra days in scenic, historic Santorini. We’re happy to assist with suggestions!
Breakfast. The Workshop: Artist Linda Matthews Sometimes the best memories are the ones that touch our heart and soul in small, unusual ways. In this special workshop we’ll be travelling through Santorini with our eyes fixed not only on the beautiful city and surrounds, but we’ll also be on a quest to discover the small hidden treasures that have personal meaning only to us. To remember this special time, along the way we’ll be creating pieces of textile art called “Fragments”.
“Fragments” are small stitched textiles that are a fusion of fabrics, fibers and papers, images and words, and found objects collected along the way. All these pieces are hand stitched together using a free-form sewing technique to form a beautiful collaged fabric travel journal that contains secret pockets and places to hold the things we most want to remember about this trip.
As we travel we’ll observe and capture our favorite moments and memories using photography, sketching and journaling. We’ll use the reference material that we collect along the way to create our stitched Fragments both on-site and later at the hotel. Our favorite photos will also be printed right onto fabric so they can be easily stitched into our Fragments to create our unforgettable memories.
Once completed, your Fragments Journal will become a unique and personal memento of a wonderful trip abroad. Every time you look at it you will be reminded of this special time and place.
