Journal August 28

Today I had the afternoon off. On the spur of the moment, I decided to visit the zoo. I hadn’t been there in years, and I guess it might have been an angry letter-to-the-editor about zoo conditions that planted the idea in my head. My eyes were really opened.

The first thing I saw was the graffity covering all the buildings near the entrance. The area almost looked as though it 1.(be/abandon)_______________________. I wish people 2.(have)___________________ more respect for public buildings. After all, we taxpayers are the ones who pay for them, ultimately. The next thing I noticed was that there was trash everywhere; the places looked as if it 3. (not/be/clean)____________________ for at leas a month. I wish there 4. (be) _________________ more money to clean up the whole city, the zoo included.

Anyway. I kept walking and looked at all the animal exhibits, or should I way animal prisons. Aren’t zoos supposed to be enlightened places these days? Not our zoo! Take the hippopotamus pond, for example. I could smell it from a hundred yards away. It’s no wonder the pond stank; it appeared as though the water 5. (not/be/change) _________________________ for months. Then I was the monkeys in their cages. Poor creatures! They acted as it they 6. (give up)_______________________ hope. Their cages were small and mostly filthy, and they sat there in a dispirited manner.

I pushed on and saw the other animals in their exhibit, and their situations were all pretty much the same—especially the large animals like bears and cats. This sort of thing is so unfair to the animals. I hope someone 7. (do)____________________ something about this. At any rate, today was really a day of learning. I just wish I 8.(know) _____________________ about this sooner. I’m going to write my senator.

Dear Diary, July 4

This has been one of those days when I wish have stayed in bed. It started at 7:30 this morning when Trudy called me up and asked me for “a little favor.” She’s always asking me to do things for her and never wants to take may responsibility for herself. She acts as if the world owe her a living. I whish she won’t do that! Today she wanted me to take her to the mall because she had to get her mother a birthday present. I told her I had to be downtown at 10:00a.m. for a job interview, and she said it wouldn’t take long to drive to the mall and that I’d have plenty of time to get downtown. I gave in and agreed to take her, but something told me I shouldn’t. If I would have listened to my inner voice, I might had a job today. When we were on the freeway, there was a major accident, and traffic was tied up for over an hour. By the time we got to the mall, it was ten-thirty, so I missed my job interview. I think I probably would get the job if I would have managed to make it to the interview, because my qualifications are good. If only I wouldn’t have listened to Trudy! I just hope she never asked me to do something like this again, and if she does, I hope I didn’t agree.
