Assignment 7 - Critique on Visual Basic Design Process

Microsoft Corporation  is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975, to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for Altair 8800. This company develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer softwareconsumer electronics and personal computers and services.

Visual Basic is a third-generation event-driven programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) developed by Microsoft for its COM programming model, released in 1991. Microsoft intended Visual Basic to be relatively easy to learn and use. Visual Basic was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid application development (RAD) of graphical user interface (GUI) applications, access to databases using Data Access Objects, Remote Data Objects, or ActiveX Data Objects, and creation of ActiveX controls and objects.

According to Dee Dee Walsh, Marketing Manager of Microsoft, she saying that she was started Microsoft on visual basic and had been in the industry for nearly thirty years in technical, marketing and business development roles. She has worked at Microsoft for 18 years and spent the past several years working on E-Commerce. Time for developing windows was so hard and should pay huge amount for developers and windows programmers. Therefore the company felt so difficult, stuck and disappointed in making windows. Meanwhile she met a guy name Tom Button works in Microsoft as a project manager (project name –Thunder). She creates the first windows project on visual basic with Tom Button together. Finally she expanded the market share for emerging developer tools of Visual Basic and Visual Studio.

According to Mardi Brekke, Marketing Manager of Microsoft, saying that she came to Microsoft in February 1993 for a contractor and that time Microsoft just launched VB3. In the last 16 years at Microsoft has spent much of her time in the Developer Division. Currently, she is working on the Windows Embedded Marketing team spreading the good word about Windows on specialized devices.

The culture of Microsoft in that time was really fun, technical and people were really focused on the projects. Company wants from the people who like Mardi and the Walsh were come on people aspect and create developer community and make them happy and help them. From the developer community they build a great relationship with each other. In developer community there is no rule to develop any kind of software and make the community happy. People can develop the software, tools what they really wanted to do with their own ideas. This makes the people to be more comfortable and possible and come up with new ideas. This developer community really wants to access to Microsoft, coding, tools anything success. Dee Dee Walsh and Mardi Brekke mentioning that in that time the big company like IPM that having the blue print of how the developers were treated and good infrastructure but not having the people aspect, Microsoft created the infrastructure, fun in people aspect.
