The war was still raging in Europe but the “writing was on the wall.” The Allied leaders knew it was only a mater of time before Germany would be defeated. This was, among other things, a meeting about logistics, i.e. how Europe will be arranged, what to do with the Nazi’s after they are defeated etc.. Ultimately, they agreed to meet again.
Potsdam: July 1945, city in Germany not far from Berlin. New leaders. Clement Atlee (Britain Churchill had been voted out) Harry Truman (USA, Roosevelt died in April) and Stalin (USSR). Agree to division of occupied zones in Germany and Nuremberg trials to deal with Nazis. Agreed Japan had to be beaten and end the war. Biggest difference was Truman and his approach, (new leaders) he had a get tough style of dealing with problems. This approach would not get results with a personality like Stalin. Truman’s confidence was helped by the news that his country had just successfully detonated the world’s first Atomic bomb.(new technology)
