6) List and briefly describe any current projects that are not proprietary and that you can share.

a. I partially fund my research by testing industry developed products for efficacy against Nylanderia fulva both in the laboratory and field. I have completed projects with BASF, Bayer Crop Sciences, Central Life Sciences, Neudorff North America, and Rescue Sterling International Inc. Of note, TopChoice is the most effective product tested. At least 3 months of significant management was achieved when TopChoice was applied at the peak of crazy ant populations.

b. I was recently awarded a Farm Bill grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to investigate the impact of crazy ants on pecan orchard pests. This is a collaborative effort with Bill Ree at TAMU.

c. I have been investigating the phenology of N. fulva mating flights because (a) queens were presumed to lack the capability for long distance flights and (b) their reproductive strategy is presumed to consists of budding from the original colony. Preliminary results are confirming these behaviors.

d. My graduate student just finished his project on the critical thermal maximum and minimum for N. fulva workers as well as sub-lethal effects of temperature on queen fecundity.

e. I am advising a student at UT Tyler that is conducting research on the use of RNAi to down-regulate genes in N. fulva in order to develop new management strategies that will not affect non-target organisms

7) Do you have a tawny crazy ant outreach program for stakeholders in your state/area?

No

8) Have you developed any management plans for this pest for your stakeholders? If so, briefly describe.

Only recommendations in presentations and over the phone

9) What types of management are stakeholders currently using in your area to control the tawny crazy ant?

Hiring PCOs. Termidor Section 18 label. Some baiting.

10) Are you currently working on any tawny crazy ant projects that are collaborative projects with other researchers?

I was recently awarded a Farm Bill grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to investigate the impact of crazy ants on pecan orchard pests. This is a collaborative effort with Bill Ree at TAMU.

11. Are you familiar with the services the Southern IPM Center has to offer our group?

No

Ask at meeting…………………………..

What other info do we need to get a proper pest status.

Agricutlural effects

What information does the group have about the IPM center and how we can work together?

How much collaboration do we currently have?

SHSU collaborates with TAMU for applied and basic research and partners with industry for applied research
