BAYOU-CORNE-SINKHOLE-CASE-STUDY
FINDINGS
The Bayou Corne Sinkhole situated in Assumption Parish, Lousiana was accidentally caused by a drilling company named Texas Brine, in the course of riddling for concentrated salts. The sinkhole is currently 26 acres which specifically destroyed the trees, boats, and even houses and continues to devour surrounding lands. According to the state officials, it was estimated that it will widen from its present size to at least 40 acres in the next few years. Furthermore, the said sinkhole has produced small quakes and emitted gas and oil. The natural gas has started to spill up through the formation making the nearby atmosphere unsafe. Consequently, this has led the Bayou
Corne's residents to abandon their homes. This is for the reason that they have been complaining about the unpleasant smell which gave them headaches and made them vomit. However, Texas Brine argued that its actions alone did not cause the sinkhole. They asserted that a well drilled in 1986 by Occidental Chemical is to blame. Three years ago, a Louisiana district discovered that Texas Brine was 35% at fault for the 2012 catastrophe, Occidental Chemical 50% and Vulcan Materials 15% liable. Since they all failed to pay attention to the warnings about potential problems with the salt cavern from its emergence in the mid-1970s to its eventual closure before the sinkhole occurred. Unfortunately, only the Texas Brine took full accountability for the incident they have been paying the affected residents $875 per week and they stated that they have more than $150 million in response efforts in the year 2018, yet the residents have been pursuing a long-term reimbursement for means to restart themselves elsewhere. Texas Brine has been tasked with settling the problem and has been under strict inspection by the officials of Louisiana. Texas Brine have been issued quickly of fines and penalties on the events they have failed to observe directives. Nonetheless, Texas Brine Company has been dedicated to responding this incident and accomplishing the four key objectives identified

by local and state officials confirming dome stability, maintaining sinkhole containment, venting gas and supporting the Bayou Corne Community. The company has made remarkable progress in response to the sinkhole incident, essential to ensuring public safety. Texas Brine ordered an unprecedented D seismic study, which stipulated more detailed and accurate imagery. With the help of imagery it indicates that there are no gap spaces that could lead to the creation of another sinkhole and the authorities believe that there is no proof of additional hydrocarbon pockets. Moreover, results of the Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) and D study revealed that the Western edge of the Napoleonville dome is stable. After all, a priority for Texas Brine has always been to vent recoverable gas from underneath Bayou Corne when found. To make the venting program possible, substantial progress has been made. Also, Gas Venting Relief Well (ORW) locations were chosen to authorize removal of gas from areas based on the highest production potential.
