Students Learn About NC Ports
By Susan N. Pridgen, Communications Department
Student groups from Carter G. Woodson High School in Winston-Salem and international students from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington visited the Port of Wilmington recently to learn more about the port and its daily operations.
“I would like to thank the Ports Authority for making our trip so successful,” said Nicole Henry, Graduation Coach. “We could not have asked for a better tour or tour guide."
"We look forward to sending more students your way for education and future job opportunities,” Ms. Henry said. (far left)
Carter G. Woodson School is a public charter school serving students in grades K-12 since 1997. Their caring and dedicated leadership team challenges, engages and inspires each student to achieve their highest potential. The teachers at CGWS provide one-on-one coaching on graduation plans as well as individually following up on each student’s college application.
The group of international students from UNCW came to the port to learn more about industry in their new home of Wilmington, NC.
“The tour is part of a course that I created three years ago to allow international students studying at UNCW to engage more meaningfully in the Wilmington community,” said Jennifer Fernandez-Villa, Director of International Student & Scholar Services.
“While visiting locations like the port, hospital, jail, courthouse, schools and more, international students learn about Wilmington institutions and more broadly about US society and culture in a way that textbooks can’t convey,” said Fernandez-Villa.
The students all enjoyed the tour very much and were amazed by all that the port does. They commented that they liked knowing Wilmington has global connections. The international delegation represented France, Denmark and China.
Both tour groups had the Port of Wilmington’s engineering project manager and facilities maintenance manager, Jeff Bellows, serve as their tour guide. “Both student groups were highly attentive and interested in how the Port of Wilmington operates and the types of job opportunities that exist here,” said Bellows. “It is great to have such a high level of interest in joining our business in the future.”
