AIR (Access to Internet Resources) Project
Overview

CPSB AIR (Access to Internet Resources) project offers schools the opportunity to have open “guest” access to CPSB wireless (WiFi) Internet resources. Students and employees will be allowed to bring to school personal WiFi devices—laptops, netbooks, and tablets — that have no phone capabilities to schools for educational use. The goal of Maplewood Middle School’s A.I.R. Project is to provide student access to Internet resources by increasing the number of Internet-ready devices in the classroom. Students are allowed to bring personal PC laptops, netbooks, and tablets to school for use in the classrooms of participating teachers. This opportunity will be the first step in creating truly adequate and appropriate access for 21st century learning environments and, eventually, a dynamic district-wide digital learning culture.

Approved Devices

For purposes of CPSB AIR, acceptable devices means a privately owned WiFi and/or portable electronic laptop, netbook, and tablets that can be used for word processing, wireless Internet access, image capture/recording, sound recording and information transmitting/receiving/storing, etc.

Minimum Requirements/Specs for Devices

The following specifications are minimum requirements for devices to function efficiently in the classroom:

  • Device must use automatically detect settings for the Network settings and Internet browser. Any custom or manual settings could prevent the device from connecting to the CPSB AIR network.

  • Most current WiFi enabled devices should be able to connect to the CPSB AIR WiFi network, but some of the older WiFi devices may not function. (new purchases should be Windows 7)

  • Student Wireless (WiFi) troubleshooting

  1. Verify that your WiFi service is enabled and connected to CPSB AIR.

  2. Verify that you have opened a new web browser window and successfully authenticated at the login page.

  3. Determine if the connectivity issues are isolated to only your machine; then report it to your classroom teacher.

Hardware/software issues of personal WiFi devices are not supported by the district technology support department. For support on these issues, contact the manufacturer or your own private technical support service from home.

  • Teachers are not allowed to download software to the student computer. The student owned device must have the latest version of Internet Explorer installed to access the Internet. Other recommended software includes Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint. , but this software is NOT required. There are open source or free compatible versions of these types of software available. Updates and upgrades will not be performed from the school server. No students’ devices “may be hardwired to the CPSB Internet.”

  • Although our school server is protected with filters and firewalls, all student devices are required to have antivirus software loaded to prevent any harmful data from damaging the student device. There is free software of this type available via the internet.

  • The Calcasieu Parish School and/or Maplewood Middle School personnel (including faculty and staff) are not liable for the theft, loss, or damage to any student device. Your agreement to our guidelines and policies includes an understanding that your child is ultimately responsible for his/ her own device.

Security and Damages

Personal WiFi devices are the sole responsibility of the individual owner regardless as to whether the owner or a borrower of the device is performing actions on it. Appropriate customization of personal devices is recommended; skins (decals) and other custom touches may be used to physically identify your device and differentiate from others (following CPSB Student Code of Conduct). CPSB is not liable for any device stolen or damages which occur on school property.

Student Agreement and Parental/Guardian Permission

The use of CPSB AIR is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of privileges and/or other disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by administration, faculty, and staff. When respected, CPSB AIR will benefit the learning environment as a whole. All offenses (i.e. illegal activities, inappropriate language or graphics, etc.) will be handled through the school’s administrative offices. Students and parents/guardians participating in the CPSB AIR Project must adhere to school policies, Student Code of Conduct, as well as all Calcasieu School Board policies, particularly the Internet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

Students and parents/guardians acknowledge that

  • While on school property, students may access only the CPSB AIR network.

  • All Internet connectivity will be filtered via CPSB AIR according to applicable laws and policies. Under NO circumstances should students attempt to bypass the Internet filters.

  • Personal WiFi devices brought to school will have updated anti-virus protection and an active firewall.

  • All personal devices are free of viruses, Trojans, malware, or any programs designed to damage, alter, or destroy any devices or the CPSB Network is in violation of the CPSB Acceptable Use Policy.

  • Processing or accessing information on school property related to “hacking”, altering, or bypassing network security policies is in violation of the CPSB Acceptable Use Policy.

  • The school district has the right to confiscate and examine any device that is suspected of causing problems, was the source of an attack or virus infection, or in violation of any school or district policy.

  • All personal WiFi devices are the sole responsibility of the individual owner. CPSB is not liable for any device stolen or damages which occur on school property.

  • CPSB is not responsible for any data loss on a student personal device while connected to CPSB Air network. Students are responsible for ensuring that any critical data is backed up.

  • Student personal devices will not be used to cheat on assignments or tests, or for non-instructional purposes (such as text/instant messaging or surfing unauthorized sites).

  • Student personal devices will not be used to record, transmit or post-photographic images or video of a person, or persons at school.

Maplewood Specific Student Requirements

  • The device is to be carried in a labeled LAPTOP MESSENGER BAG, not a laptop backpack, regular backpack or book bag. Contents of the case should include a labeled charging cord and labeled headphones. A mouse is the only optional peripheral. No other items should be brought to class in the laptop bag.

  • All items (peripherals and bag included) are to be labeled BEFORE they are brought to school. Label items with the student name and a contact number.

  • Device peripherals (charging cords, headphones, mouse) will NOT be shared with other students. Sharing charging cords of different brands can damage the device. Sharing of other accessories can lead to damage or loss.

  • When not in use, the device must be stored in the laptop bag INSIDE THE SECURED STUDENT LOCKER. The student locker should be locked and not set to open automatically. It is imperative that the student not share the locker combination with any other student. Devices may NOT be left overnight.

  • Devices are brought to school to participating teachers’ classrooms. A list of participating teachers is included in this document. Devices are used only in participating teachers’ classrooms. Substitute teachers are not participating teachers.

  • Devices are charged only while in the participating teachers’ classrooms. Never leave a device charging unattended.

  • A.I.R. Project provides access to Internet sites. The school’s Acceptable Use Policy will be enforced for student devices just as for school laptops, netbooks, and IPADs. Please refer to the behavior plan for the consequences of violating the AUP. Violations of AUP include but are not limited to accessing the Internet or other software without the permission and supervision of a participating teacher, harassing other students with online posting, posting pictures of other students with intent to embarrass or hurt others, bringing inappropriate pictures or music to school, etc.

  • At no time will students be allowed to use CPSB Air with a Substitute Teacher.

  • Please install Cloud On (freeware) or Pages to your student’s IPADs OR install CloudOn (freeware) or Kingsoft (freeware) to your tablet prior to being brought to school for use in the classroom.

  • It is also encouraged that protective cases for technology are utilized for laptops and netbooks, but a protective covering (ie otterbox) must be on a tablet or IPAD.

Only students whose parent(s) has/have been contacted will be allowed to participate in the A.I.R. Project. Device must be verified by A.I.R. Instructor before connecting to CPSB AIR. I understand and will abide by the above policy and guidelines. I further understand that any violation is unethical and may result in the loss of my network and/or laptop privileges as well as other disciplinary action.
