Camden County

By Jon Broscious and Paige Gillette

*
Camden County is located in the southwest area of New Jersey, as shown on the map above. As drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau, the approximate population in Camden County is 517,000 people with an approximate density of 2,290 people per square mile and an approximate 228 sq. mileage.* According to a 2000 census, there were 185,744 households, and 129,835 families residing in the County.* Camden County is bordered by the Delaware River and Philadelphia on it’s northwest border, thus making for the densest areas in productions and attractions being located here. While the density of the areas in the northwest corridor of Camden County do not directly imply poverty, such residential density is interesting to note in a county in which over 10% of its inhabitants are impoverished.* Camden is also bordered by the New Jersey counties, Atlantic, to its southeast, Burlington County, to its northeast, and Gloucester, to its southwest. As one moves further down Camden County’s southwest corridor, one notices a clear progression from the dense, urban residential and industrial areas to a rural, dispersed residential setting, as generally represented from the map below.

The major, presently-offered transit systems of Camden County include the PATCO high speed line, the River Line, the RiverLink Ferry, and the Atlantic City Line from NJ Transit.***
