Opening Credits—Camera Panning around a warehouse…very slowly. Not very clear what the camera is looking at. As the credits are ending the camera rolls up to bat signal in the night sky and in the middle of the logo: Directed by Nick Smith. End opening credits.
--Cut to Wide Shot of Warehouse—

Large trucks being loaded, several thugs carrying large crates, a very large operation. A big crime boss can be seen on a tall catwalk, wearing a striped suit and surrounded by bodyguards.

BOSS MALONE

Dos trucks better be sealed and delivered in two minutes or you all can find yourselves on the street…

(Turns around to face bodyguards)

Would be a homecoming for most of ‘em.

(pops cigar into mouth) (Bodyguards snicker)
--Camera Cuts to two Thugs carrying a large crate—
THUG #1

Let’s go you pussy—you heard the boss--move it!

(Thug #2 mishandles the crate and it falls and hits the ground)
THUG #1

Ah Jeez, Man… You can’t screw around with this shit—

(A shadow casts over the thugs)
BIRD

What’s going on here?

--Thug POV, a huge shadow figure, black, with a light behind him.
Thug #2

Oh, uh, sorry boss… stupid slip up.

(Bird grabs Thug and lifts him off the ground)
--Camera reveals BIRD, (into light)
BIRD

You idiot, don’t you see—We’ve got priceless minutes before the BAT, gets here. The Magic Man doesn’t want to deal with him…(brief pause)….not tonight.

(Bird throws the thug to the ground and exits)
--Cut to outside warehouse, sign reads: PEIR 81. Gotham City Patrol Cars roll up in front and around the sign, sirens and lights blasting. Harvey Bullock and Gordon step out of a lead car.

As policemen are running around them, Gordon grabs a megaphone.

Gordon

(Into megaphone) Alright, people, now….let’s move in on my signal. (turns to bullock, out of megaphone) speaking of signal…..

--Almost interrupting Gordon, the scene cuts. Wide shot of Wayne Manor with the Bat Signal high above, to the left. The scene is very quiet—camera slowly moves downward, the road in the middle of the woods is visible. Music kicks up as the batmobile zooms by. Inside the car, batman is looking at the built in screen. Gordon is on via satellite.
Gordon

Looks like Malone’s whole gang is down here at Pier 84, Batman… I wonder what the hell they are doing here…

--camera focuses on just batman’s eyes—
Batman

They are breaking the law, Gordon….how long have you been on the force?

Gordon

Just get here quick, batman, it’s going to be hell. I’m out.

--camera focuses on just batman’s eyes—
Cut to Camera looking from behind as the Batmobile zooms off.
EXT. Warehouse

Camera is panning just outside the windows and numerous thugs are breaking the windows with Ak-47s. Firing away, the camera follows.

INT. Warehouse

BIRD
Gotta teach those coppers whose boss.

(Bird wheels a bazooka type gun)
BIRD

Hasta La Vista.

(Bird fires the launcher and a Gotham City Armored Truck explodes)

Cut to Bullock and Gordon
(Bullock surveying scene) Sir, I can’t believe you depend on a Batman to crack these guys. Why have you succumbed to a pointed eared, flying rodent?
GORDON

We’ve got them surrounded, they aren’t going anywhere. Batman is insurance. Besides, Bullock, Bats aren’t rodents.

--Cut to Batmobile zooming through Gotham City--
--Wide shot of the war zone. Cops and thugs firing, explosions.
GORDON (on megaphone)

We have you surrounded, you are done Malone!

INT. Warehouse Office.
BIRD is addressing Zombie

They think we are surrounded, that’s Gotham’s finest for ya. (into radio) Okay, we are ready to move out.

(Door Slams—Enter Malone and Bodyguards with guns)
MALONE

Okay, buddy…I’ve done my deal. You tell that freak that he better stay in his place. I’m running the show around here…Gotham City is mine for the taking, not his.

(Zombie Knocks out the bodyguards with a nuerlizing gun)
MALONE

(stunned) You people are nuts, I’m outta here!

BIRD

Mr. BossMan, I think I’ll show you the door. (BIRD raises a semi-automatic)

-Cut to Thugs shutting the truck doors and putting the last crates in.
--Batman Enters, but not a big dramatic “forever” entrance. Very sneaky and swift. One by one takes out the thugs.
--During the bout, A big truck crashes through a garage door and the camera follows it to outside.
EXT. Warehouse

(Police, Gordon and Bullock all watch the truck make it’s way to the gate)

GORDON (into radio)

This must be Malone, stop the truck, we are putting an end to this.

(The truck runs into an armored tank and stops. Gordon gives the signal and the policemen rush to the truck)
GORDON (into megaphone)

Get that scum out of there!

(Close up on Bullock looking at the sky—Above the pier. He sees a helicopter)
BULLOCK

Gordon, I don’t think that is such a good idea…

INT. Truck

Camera is poised as the doors swing open, looking at the police men. Almost instantly, the men’s faces turn to horror. Camera looks at Malone tied up and beaten. The camera looks down, underneath Malone -- there is a huge array of explosives….Timer reading 2 seconds (camera looks at Malone’s face--HORROR)

Wideshot of huge explosion. Bullock and Gordon look on in disbelief.
INT. Warehouse

Batman is kicking some more ass, rounding up some thugs when he hears the helicopter. A huge floodlight scrambles around the warehouse and in the shadows Batman sees a dark shadowy Figure in the high ceiling beams.

BATMAN

Who are you?
BANE

So you are the Bat…

--Batman can make out a somewhat huge figure—
BATMAN (puzzled)

What are you?

BANE

You will know me soon enough…You will scream my name (large pause) When I break you, the last thing you will hear is my name…I will haunt your pitiful legacy….forever.
(BIRD calls for BANE from the chopper)

--Batman reaches for his Batarang from his belt. He makes a fast effort to reach the ceiling but the large, bulky man is too quick. He escapes.

BATMAN POV

Camera looks into a whole in the ceiling and a bright white light

BANE

You will scream my name…You will scream my na…..

(helicopter leaves the scene) The camera follows the chopper out of the ceiling hole, the background is the dark ocean, the chopper turns and is facing the camerar. Shot ends with the chopper zooming by the camera.

INT. Batcave

(Batmobile is retracting on it’s hidden rampway…Batman is taking off the cape and cowl—Alfred appears)
ALFRED

Big Boss Malone’s murder is all over GNN, may I ask what is going on?

BRUCE

To tell you the truth Alfred, I’m not sure

(A ringing noise—the computer lights up)
(Gordon is on the radio, blasting through the speakers in the cave)
GORDON

Thanks for saving the day, Batman. I’m puzzled over Malone’s death, who’s behind this deal?

BATMAN

I wouldn’t call it a day, Gordon. There was a man in the warehouse, he escaped with the helicopter—there were three men with him—I don’t think any of them were with Malone.

GORDON

New boys in town, we’ll look around.

BATMAN
Gordon, this man was roughly the size of a barge. He spoke with a Latino accent
GORDON

Okay, I’ll see what we have (pause). Batman—this is Sergeant Bullock.

BULLOCK

Ah yes, Bat…Listen, we just opened those trucks up. This seems to be the cover up of the century.

BATMAN

It’s a new century, Bullock, what were in those trucks?

BULLOCK

Lettuce, crates of lettuce.

BATMAN

The four men had what they wanted---in the helicopter. They must have used Malone and the lettuce as a distraction.

BULLOCK

Distraction, huh.

BATMAN

I don’t see any of those men in Jail tonight, do I – Bullock? It seemed to work.

BULLOCK

Listen, Bat, they beat you, too.

BATMAN

I told Gordon; search the database for a spreadsheet on the largest criminals in Gotham.

BULLOCK
Most of the Wackos are up in Arkham…
BATMAN

No, I mean physically. I’m talking dimensions here. (pause) We’ll be in touch.

BULLOCK

Sure thing, Bat.

(Batman turns to Alfred, begins to undress)
BATMAN

This is disturbing, Alfred. I’ve got to find out what those men took and the Latino man, need to figure out who he is.

ALFRED

Perhaps he is from out of town, you know all of the biggest cronies in this town, you put more than half of them in that Arkham Asylum.

(Bruce Wayne appears from the wardrobe chamber)
BRUCE

That is what I am thinking….I get the feeling like this guy is out to get me…He wants to crush me…If he just got to Gotham, what’s his gig? What does he want?

ALFRED

This is where your Mother tells you to go to bed….And sleep on it. The wee hours of the night are not going to help.

EXT. Gotham City—Dark motel
(A dark, rundown motel. BIRD is standing outside the office window.)
BIRD

Give me two rooms. Let’s do the two over there.

(BIRD points)
MANAGER

Rate is$47.50 a night—one room. No dogs ‘n shit, keep it down, and make sure….

(BIRD walks away, not caring)
MANAGER (to himself)

Jerk off…jeez (shaking his head)

INT. Motel Room
BIRD

Okay Magic Man. We’re all set.

(sitting at a small card table, BANE sits…face not visible)
BANE

Good.
TROGG

Yes indeed, this place is where it’s at; you catch all the action in the Big G.
BANE

This protector, the Bat…I’ve now seen him…he is nothing. He will break under my strength.

ZOMBIE

Right on, Magic Man. What are we hitting next?

BANE

The list is on the table.

(BANE makes his way to the bedroom, still not completely visible)
BANE

I want six women tonight.

BIRD

Sure thing. I’ll call my man. (pause) They’ll be here around two.

INT. Bedroom
(Camera is a bird’s eye view, type)
--Bane makes his way to the bed, camera too far away

to make out a visible face.

--BANE lets out a groan and collapses on the bed. He reaches for the stud on his arm, pushes a button and let’s the venom sooth him.
BANE Begins to dream…
INT. Sana Prisa

BANE is in a Jail Cell. 9 years old. He is surrounded by bars. Long corridors, huge prison facility. A large, wide man appears with cops. He is smoking a cigar and is holding a bang stick. BANE is with his mother, Priscina.

WARDEN

It’s time you met yours, bitch.

PRISCINA

No, no. My baby, what about my baby (being taken away) NO!

EXT. Cliff of Tiburon
(Bane is watching. Being restrained by guards)
WARDEN

They call this the Cliff of Tiburon. (closer to her) Do you know why?

(look of horror on Priscina)
WARDEN

Cuz of what’s at the bottom…

(The warden throws her into the sky, off the cliff. Priscina falls into the depths of the ocean)
WARDEN (faces BANE)

Listen little man, you are in my hell now. You have been born into a life of imprisonment You belong to us… and I’m gonna make sure you rot.

INT. Cocina Hall
--Cut to dinner time, huge long tables, all chairs filled by inmates. Little BANE is shown eating soup.
ESTEBAN (across the table)

Ya know something, little chico, that bone of a bitch mother of yours—she had it comin, she sure gave you the life—Free room and board—and all you can eat shit—for the rest of your pathetic, wasted life.

--The inmates erupt in laughter at Esteban’s comments
--A look of evil comes across BANE’s face, he is pissed. He reaches for his spoon and jumps Esteban across the table. BANE kills Esteban with a fury, security guards restrain BANE.
INT. Warden’s Office
WARDEN

Ya know what, son…Your life just got a helluva lot worse. Enough of this bullshit joven --protection crap, your living on my time now. I’m gonna watch you rot. I’m gonna run you into the ground – When I’m done with you, you’ll be looking right at your Mother….together at the very bottom of the Gulf. You’ll be nothing more than sharks’ food, little man.

BANE

Are you sure throwing me to the sharks would be wise, Warden? It’s just that throwing some one in, say your size, would hold them for several weeks.

--The Warden gets up and cracks BANE’s head with a bang stick. Scene fades to black.
INT. Jail Cell (solitary confinement)
--BANE awakens to a very dark cell, cold and damp. He can hear the waves of the ocean. There is a faint light coming from a high window, barred off. He jumps high and holds himself up by the bars. He can see the ocean. It is only a foot or so below the window.
BANE

Mis Dios. This hellhole is going to flood. The tide will be here soon…Mis Dios…Mis Dios

--The tide begins to creep into the cell, hours pass into the night showing the cell flood. BANE holds on to the bars for his life.
--Training scene. BANE is keeping track of the days on the ceiling, using a stone he found. He eats the rats that squirm in and out of the cell, rummaging around the ground. He kills them using the same stone, crushing their heads. He does thousands of pushups a day, hundreds of curl ups and pull ups. BANE is turning himself into a perfect physical specimen.

Each night he prepares himself for the tide and hangs on the bars, barely surviving.

-Camera pans, looking at the ceiling (full of neat, organized digits/slashes keeping track of the days) thousands of markings. BANE is now fifteen years old. Camera stops, looking at the cell doorway, it slams open…The Warden is there with guards.
WARDEN

Well looky here, boys…We got ourselves a Man.

BANE

Damn you…You left me here for six god damn years. (He points to the ceiling)

You’re a Monster.
WARDEN

I’m not a monster… (Pause) I only work for monsters (snickers with the guards) Besides, I’m not finished here. Do you know what we do to men here? (Long pause) We break ‘em!!!

--Flash to reality. Camera is outside the motel window, BIRD is looking outside…The six women (hookers) are climbing out of a limo and making their way across the parking lot.
BIRD

By god—I hope those women have a helluva insurance policy.

--Cut to Arkham Asylum. Still night…Storm approaching, lightning and thunder. Camera pans from looking at high gate sign: Arkham Asylum to an Outline of the gate, staring at the massive structure. Harvey Bullock pulls up in front, and steps out.
--Cut to inside—Bullock walking down the long corridor with Dr. Burton.
INT. Arkham Aslym
BULLOCK

Dr. Burton, hello. I’m sergeant Bullock. I need some records of what we have here. Who’s locked up, who’s dead and who is still lethal?

BURTON

Oh, I see…

BULLOCK

I’m looking for a man that is roughly the size of a pickup. He speaks with a Latino accent—he has at least three goons working for him. Did you hear about that escapade down at the pier?

BURTON

I heard something on the radio, sorry, I don’t get out much.

BULLOCK

This guy is power hungry. He wants in on this city—he used Big Boss Malone and then murdered him. He was down at Pier 84 and he got away with whatever he was there for.

BURTON

To be quite honest with you, sergeant Bullock—things are pretty quiet. We’ve got the usual big crime bosses locked up in here. But as far as the extreme cases….Dr. Victor Freeze, he now works on staff here at Arkham; he is no harm to this city. Poison Ivy can’t tend a garden anymore, Clayface…err Dr. ____________ is under strict supervision. He hasn’t morphed for over 14 months, very stable. Of course ther….

BULLOCK

So, it sounds like things are pretty secure, no breakouts, not a whole lot of action. But have you see…

BURTON

Sergeant Bullock, there is one inmate here that is still quite questionable.

BULLOCK

Questionable as in?

BURTON

That’s just it, he defines the word. (Long Pause) Edward Nygma. The former Riddler of Gotham City.

BULLOCK

Nygma? Wasn’t he fried by the Bat? His mind went scientific boink…what’s going on Doctor?

BURTON

I’m sorry, but Edward Nygma, the Riddler, is very much alive…I’d say he is more of a threat to Gotham now, then when he put that box on the market. He has it in for Batman, (long pause) countless hours of each day, cursing Batman….swearing revenge.

BULLOCK
Well Doctor, I trust that he is under maximum security; this revenge will never see the light of day.
BURTON
Oh course sir. See, his mind is strong, he gets his memory back in pieces. As far as the brain waves, I don’t know if they are still there or not.
BULLOCK
He can only be Edward Nygma, Doctor. There aren’t any more minds in that head.
BURTON
I wouldn’t be too sure, Sergeant. I have studied Edward from day one, they may still be there.
BULLOCK
We have it on our file that the Bat destroyed the antenna that the Riddler was using, the brain waves were sucked out.
BURTON

You should revise your report. Those waves didn’t just go back to their homes, back to the people, hell…they were manipulative. Copies. The Riddler has them stored somewhere, he won’t tell me where. The manipulative brain waves went from the antenna to a determined location. Whether this location be an old hideout or a simple phone booth, some sort of satellite—If he ever retrieved the brain waves—The Riddler would be back in business. He was too smart at the time to let just a simple antenna crash destroy him (pause) forever.

BULLOCK

I’ll look into that. We’ll be in touch. Keep Edward Nygma under strict eye. I think that something big in this city is coming—I’m not sure what it is.

(Scene is at Wayne Enterprises. Use the “forever” building…more realistic.)
INT. Wayne Enterprises
(Bruce Wayne is in a meeting with investors, city board members and the mayor)
MAYOR

We’ve had this discussion before, Gentlemen, this super-complex(holds up design) is the future of Gotham City. We’re 95% through construction and I’ve got some of my backers telling me—we should maybe rethink this?

BOARD MEMBER #1

Your honor, we just want to make sure that this is exactly what we want. Obviously, we aren’t going to abandon the project when it’s over practically completed. Steps need to be taken to make sure this is being done correctly.

MAYOR
Bruce what do you think (pause…Bruce is off on another planet) Bruce!
BRUCE

Yes, oh sorry.

MAYOR
What do you think?
BRUCE
When you first came to me about this project, a super-mega complex—The first of it’s kind. I was curious, there isn’t another one in the nation. This project is being built right in the heart of the city. We have had so much crap in Gotham for so long—It’s time the high rollers gave something back to the city. The morale will skyrocket. I am still backing this project one hundred percent.
-Applause from the crowd—
INT. Wayne’s Office
BRUCE
Door.
(steps inside)
COMPUTER

You have a video call, Mr. Wayne…Would you like to proceed or take an automated video message?

BRUCE

I’ll take a look at it, right now--computer. (sits down)

--Satellite boots up. It’s Dick—he is at college.
DICK
Hello Bruce, been awhile partner.
BRUCE

Yes it has, how’s the studying going?

DICK

Actually, Bruce, I must say that this program—sucks.

BRUCE

Yeah, I’d figure you’d say that. So what’s up?

DICK
I was just checking in—see how things are going. The semester is over, I think I’m going to cruise around for awhile—maybe hit Vegas…How are things in Gotham, slow?
BRUCE
The usual activity…I’m actually in the middle of something right now, I can’t tell you if it’s big or not.
DICK

Really?
BRUCE

Well, I mean…Something went down at Pier 84 the other night, I know that the guy behind it is bigger than anything I’ve ever seen.
DICK

Bigger than Clayface?

BRUCE

At least twice as big, I don’t like it—Seems like he’s keeping a low profile. I have looked for days – I don’t know who he is. But, I have to go, Dick…I’m going to grab a bite to eat across the street.

DICK

Sure thing, Bruce. I’ll be seeing ‘ya.

--Computer Screen reads: END TRANSMISSION
COMPUTER

End of Transmission, Mr. Wayne.

EXT. Downtown Gotham
--Bruce Wayne is crossing the street, enters restaurant—
INT. Gotham Grill (restaurant)
--Bruce makes his way to a seat, nice and elegant place—
WAITRESS

Hello Mr. Wayne, the usual?

BRUCE
Yes, please…Andrea.
WAITRESS

Right away, Bruce.

--Waitress exits. The television from the bar catches Bruce’s attention. GNN nightly news.
REPORTER (on television)

In developing news, six young women were found late this morning—all of them murdered in a local motel. The six women were believed to be prostitutes, and were all killed the same way.

(Reporter pauses, he seems puzzled. Turns to female reporter and whispers)
REPORTER

Is this accurate?

--Female shakes head—
REPORTER

It seems that each woman died of blood loss. The symbol of Batman—the Bat emblem, was carved two inches deep through the women’s upper chest area. Police are now investingat…

--Waitress walks up to Bruce’s booth with a martini on a tray—
WAITRESS

Here you go, Mr. Wayne. Mr. Wayne?

--Bruce is gone—
--Waitress looks around and sees the revolving door spinning, puzzled.

INT. Batcave

--Bruce is on the Police Ban Radio, talking to Bullock
BRUCE
What the hell is going on, Bullock?
BULLOCK

You tell me, Bat. I’ve got six hookers dead with your signature pierced in their flesh.

BRUCE

What do you have, Bullock?

BULLOCK
I talked to the manager, he said that he rented only two rooms last night. Those two rooms were rented out to the same guy. Not coincidentally, one of those rooms is where we found the hookers.
BRUCE
What about the guy? What did he say about the man?
BULLOCK

The manager said it wasn’t the incredible hulk we’ve been looking for. All he can remember was that he had semi-short blond hair, probably bleached. (pause) He also said he spoke with a German Accent.

--Bruce hits a flashback. The helicopter from the pier, the man that was calling BANE had a heavy German accent.
BRUCE
It was him, sergeant.
BULLOCK

Excuse me, Bat…

BRUCE
The Latino beast, he killed the women.
--Another flashback. “I’m gonna break you. You will scream my name, you will scream my name.”
BULLOCK

Where’s your hunch coming from?

BRUCE

The other night at the pier, I heard one of the men from the helicopter. He called to the Latino beast in a heavy German accent. Since when does one man rent two rooms and have enough strength to kill six women? There should have been at least one woman that got out of there.

BULLOCK
Well, I talked with Gordon. We’ll handle the press as far as the bat emblem. No warrants will be issued, just cooperate…
--BRUCE kills the receiver—
BULLOCK
Asshole.

INT. Another Motel room—Pan the motel sign to look at BIRD looking out the window.

TROGG

Well, Big Man, you made the evening news.

BANE
Yes, I’m troubled, however. They aren’t mentioning the Bat much. Did I not get my point across? All I see on the screen is a pencil neck dickhead reading me facts about who the women were. Screw the women.
ZOMBIE
Indeed, screw the women. I got the dirt on that inmate you wanted. Nygma…
BANE

Yes, this is the one you were telling me about, BIRD? Tell me about him, again…

BIRD
Edward Nygma was a genius. A few years back— His Nygmatech company developed this BOX, which sucked brain waves from the users of Gotham. He got smarter, bigger and more powerful each second. (pause) Rumor has it, he found out who Batman is. Before he could capitalize from Gotham to the World, Batman stopped him. Pulled the plug. Fried Nygma’s brain. He is locked up in Arkham Asylum, I talked to my man this morning. Edward has his mental capacity stored somewhere. Seems he is ready to get out and bring the Bat down.
TROGG
What are your plans, Magic Man?
BANE

We will get this Nygma, turn him loose on Gotham and let him weaken the Bat. When the batman is on empty, I will crush him, break him over my knee and show Gotham who the new king is.

ZOMBIE

Ha ha, sounds like we got a jail break to plan. But, uh, Arkham, that’s some tough shit. I mean we’re gonna need some serio….

BIRD
What the hell do you think we were down at the pier for, my boy?
TROGG
I thought it was the seafood special???
--TROGG, BIRD and ZOMBIE erupt in laugher. BANE makes his way to the bedroom—
BANE
Tomorrow we free Nygma, but tonight. BIRD, I want six more women.
--BANE disappears into the bedroom—
BIRD
I’m probably going to have to call (pause) my other man.

INT. Wayne Manor

--Bruce Wayne is in a dark library—looking over microfilm—
(Alfred appears)
ALFRED

Looking deep into the past, master Bruce?

BRUCE

Yes, Alfred. No telling where the past might take a man, you think the future is bad?

ALFRED

Indeed, Bruce. I heard from Master Grayson today, the young lad sounds like he is keeping himself together.

BRUCE

Yeah, college seems to be doing the trick.

ALFRED

Well, it doesn’t seem like the master bedroom will be seeing you anytime tonight. I’ll go start the coffee.

BRUCE

Thanks Alfred.

--Scene fades to BANE dreaming again. The dream starts where the last one left off.
EXT. Sana Prisa
--BANE is outside, in the courtyard of the prison. He is digging a long trench—
WARDEN

What do you think of me now, little man. I’m gonna break that little spirit, just like all the jerk offs behind those walls. Your gonna dig a trench 6 feet deep, 6 feet wide from this wall to the wall there (points)

BANE

Mierda. You’ll see, your gonna pay Warden.

WARDEN

What’s that little man? I couldn’t hear…were you talking? Anyways, when you’re done digging the trench, go ahead and fill it all up again. And when you’re done filling the trench, give those arms a workout and dig the trench out. I’ll see you in a week.

--Scene segment, showing BANE dig the trench. Some inmates are outside, BIRD is seen talking with another inmate, APACO.
BIRD

Who’s the stud, Apaco? The one digging…

APACO
Yo man, that’s the guy. Awhile back—he took out Esteban, remember? With that spoon…
BIRD

That’s right, he looked familiar.

APACO
That guy is garganuwon himself, he could do some real damage…
BIRD

Yes he could, (pause) yes he could.

INT. Jail Cell
--The warden is escorting BANE to his cell.
WARDEN

You will abide by my rules, you stick with the program and you stay here—you fuck up again, you’ll find yourself back in confinement. By the way, how did the tide treat you down there?

--The prison door slams and just then BANE attacks the door, pissed at the WARDEN.
BIRD

He is nothing to you, Magic Man.

--Bane turns around to see BIRD step out of the light.
BANE

Who are you?

BIRD

My name (pause) is BIRD. Looks like we’re cell mates.

BANE
I am no ones mate, I will crack your skull in three places…
BIRD
Hey, I’m not here to get rocked…Actually, quite the contrary, I want to get out of here.
BANE

Who wouldn’t? This place is a living hell.

BIRD
Indeed. There hasn’t been a single breakout in the entire existence of Sana Prisa.
BANE

That I know.

BIRD
But, there has never been anyone in here, quite like you, either. You have the stuff, kid. Together, we can escape. Head for America.
BANE
What is America?
BIRD

America—ah…The cities there are magnificent, New York…Gotham…Chicago.

BANE

We should go to America. (long pause) Are there kings to these cities?

BIRD

Well, not really. There are mayors and crooked politicians. But nothing king like, America is a Democracy, not a dictatorship.

BANE

Is there any evil in America?

BIRD

Sure, murder, rape, corruption….but one city really has evil problems. This city is home to the greatest evil, the greatest villains of all time. Gotham City truly is the Dark City.

BANE

How is this Gotham city, still….even a city? Wouldn’t the corruption between these “great” villains have conquered it?

BIRD

There is this man. He is Gotham City’s protector—this man has thrown all of those villains into an asylum. He always prevails, seems that no one wants to mess with him. This man is (pause) the batman.

BANE

Bat-(pause)-Man. He is the king, the “dark knight” of Gotham. He is who I want. I will put this Bat-man into his place—I will throw him, up high over the city, so all of Gotham can see—and I will break him over my knee.

BIRD

Wo, wo—Magic Man, slow down. Probably should get some grub, taking the bat will take some time—and planning—but first, we have to get out of here.

(Scene fades back to reality—camera is on the Bat Signal. It’s up again over Wayne Manor.)
INT. Wayne Manor
--Bruce is still looking at the microfilm, The Bat signal appears through a window—
--Bruce walks to the main corridor and stops at the grandfather clock. He changes the time manually to ________. (This is the time of his parent’s death.)
--Tunnel way to the batcave. Puts on the armor. Roars away on the batmobile.
(camera follows the batmobile to downtown Gotham)
EXT. Police Plaza
--Batman is on top of Police Plaza—
BATMAN

Commissioner Gordon? (long pause) Bullock?

CHASE

I thought the bat-signal wasn’t a beeper?

(Chase steps into the light)
BATMAN
Chase…
(BATMAN and Chase hug tightly and kiss)
CHASE

Oh Bruce, I’m so glad to see you again. I’ve counted the days, I got in last night, well it’s been so long…

BATMAN

Back in Gotham, Doctor?

CHASE

Yes, I’m working on a new case. I thought that we could have some supper?

BATMAN

You know Chase, Bruce Wayne would have picked up the phone, if you had called…

CHASE

I just wanted to get your attention—

BATMAN
Let’s get out of here. This isn’t safe.
--BATMAN grabs Chase and jumps off the building to the street—hang glider style. –
CHASE

You were saying something about safety?

--Cut to the Batmobile zooming by—

EXT. Sana Prisa

(Flash to a black car pulling into the Sana Prisa gates. Government officials step out of the car. Four men, dressed in black walk into the entrance.)
INT. Jail Cell
(BIRD and BANE are looking at escape plans)
BIRD

So, right here at point “C” is where to start. I’d say it’s probably best to hit operacion ciclo at that point. Then from there you can comencia la violencia—from this point at the gate.

BANE

I think this is good. It’s a long swim, and the sharks. The sharks that took my mother surely would take us.

BIRD
I looked into that, big guy, it’s too far. (pause) but it’s not too far for a boat. This dump has one sitting at the north dock—in one piece and ready for launch.
BANE
Ha, ha. Very good my friend. It seems we will see this Gotham City—and I will achieve my kingdom—after I relinquish the bat.

(Cut to Wardens Office)

INT. Warden’s Office
--The government officials are in the Warden’s office.
GOV. OFFICIAL #1

Mr. ________________, we represent the United States of America. We have the authorization to use one of your inmates, yours for the choosing, to do a series of tests—conducted by the United States – for the United States.

GOV. OFFICIAL #2

We also have clearance to use the facilities on these premises for our research. We would be using the tech lab on site and a few other minor things. Nothing too intruding—just a few quiet scientists looking for a breakthrough.

WARDEN

Can I see the paperwork?

(GOV. Official #3 hands him a brief case. WARDEN opens the brief case, inside is a nice stack of money.)
GOV. OFFICIAL #3

Do we have an understanding, Mr. _______________?

WARDEN

Yes, but what are you planning to…..

GOV. OFFICIAL #1

We are not paying you, Mr. ___________, to ask questions. We will explain the procedure to the patient.

WARDEN
What kind of patient are you looking for? I’ve got a helluva crop….
GOV. OFFICIAL #4

Sir, we are looking for the most perfect human specimen here. We need someone at the top of their game, tip top shape. (Warden looks puzzled)

GOV. OFFICIAL #2

We have tried this experiment several times, using different types of people, (pause) we seem to always come up short. The patients are never able to make it to stage three. We believe, well…

GOV. OFFICIAL #1

We believe, that someone the considerably large and in total fitness would survive to step three. Perhaps you could recommend us to someone you find as, uh….Expendable.

WARDEN

Oh, I think I have just the person.

INT. Wayne Manor
(Alfred walks into the dining room with a coffee thermos. Bruce and Chase are having supper)
ALFRED
It is such a delight to see you again Dr. Meridian. It is always nice to have a glimmer of feminine beauty here, (softly) we always seem to be on short supply.
CHASE
Thanks Alfred, I always thought this place reeked of feminine beauty.
(All three chuckle. Alfred exits)
BRUCE

Yes, Chase, it is nice to see you. (long pause) You are the only woman I have ever known to leave me—and then come back.

CHASE

Well….Bruce… I thought of you every night. I would see Batman on the news…I don’t know—you were the only man that made me feel—special. I have helped people of all my life—but no one ever helped me. Then you fell into my life and you showed me that people do help people, whether they are dressed up like a bat or not.

BRUCE

You helped me realize, Chase, that being batman, is something that I not only have to do, but something I choose to do. That night—with the Riddler and Two-Face—Batman won because he wanted to, not because he had to.

CHASE

Were you just speaking in third person?

(Bruce and Chase burst with laughter)

INT. Sana Prisa

(The four Gov. Officials are following the Warden, through the long corridors)
BIRD

…We are all set here, magic man. Just remember…

BANE

Yes, I know…there is that….

(footsteps)
BIRD

Someone is coming, put this crap away. Hurry….shit.

(Warden and Gov. Officials appear)
WARDEN

His name, is BANE. He has been with us all of his life. After his Mother, Priscina, mysteriously died, we have kept him here. Sure turned out to be to quite the freak.

(BANE turns)
BANE
What the hell do you want…you fat burrito?
WARDEN

Son, your road has finally come to end. A screeching halt, as they say.

GOV. OFFICIAL #2

Mr…BANE, we’d like you to come with us now.

BANE

Never, never.

(Guards take BANE down with Bang sticks but struggle. BIRD tries to intervene –finds himself laid out)
--FLASH back to reality—
INT. Motel Room
(Zombie and Trogg enter the motel room)
TROGG
Is the magic man still asleep?
BIRD
Yes, man sleeps like a bull.
ZOMBIE

Good. Every thing is taken care of. The chopper, the amo, It’s all coming together. The plan is still for tomorrow night?

BIRD

That’s what he said. Did you go up to Arkham and deliver the message to Mr. Nygma?

ZOMBIE

Yes, he’ll receive it around dinner time.

(TROGG is looking out the window)
TROGG
Looks like the troop is here, BIRD.
BIRD

We used to call it Brandy hour—back in the day. (pause) Now, I think it’s referred to (pause) as Miller Time. I think now would be a good time to hit that bar down the street.

(A black humvee rolls out of the motel, just as six women are seen walking to the motel room)

INT. WAYNE ENTERPRISES

(Bruce Wayne is sitting at his desk. Computer calls up)
COMPUTER

Mr. Wayne, your meeting with Mr. Valley is scheduled for right now. Would you like him to enter?

BRUCE

Yes, computer. Let him in.

(A rather built man enters Bruce’s office. He is wearing a security uniform. Several units of firearms strapped on his uniform)
BRUCE

Hello, Jean Paul.

JEAN PAUL

Hello, Bruce. I’m here to just give you this months report—briefly.

BRUCE
Go ahead.
JEAN PAUL

We had another usual month. The occasional light flicker. Um, reported on the fourth and the sixteenth. The parking garage saw the usual commotion. Alarms were down for less then one percent of the month….

BRUCE
Mr. Valley, skip the bullshit. We’re all fine here, correct?
JEAN PAUL
Well, err, yes. Yes we are sir. Nothing to worry about. Wayne Enterprises security is not a problem.
(Bruce sits at his desk)
BRUCE

Jean Paul, we never did that lunch. Are you free sometime next week? I thought I’d talk over some promotional things—do you like the Grill?

JEAN PAUL

Sure, just give me a holler. Whatever you want, Bruce.

BRUCE

Alrighty then. I’ll send the word down, give you some time in advance.

JEAN PAUL

Thanks Bruce.

(Bruce grabs a stainless steel folder from a pull out rack (from the ceiling). He engages it by a remote control. He looks over Jean Paul’s file.)
BRUCE

Hmmm. Knowledge in seven different areas of combat, known worldwide. (stops and thinks) I’m some where around there. I’ve got judo on him. Unarmed combat, weapon specialist…impressive— where the hell did this guy come from?

--Alarm boots up, quiet beeping and flashing lights—
COMPUTER

Mr. Wayne, you have an incoming video call (pause) from Wayne Manor.

BRUCE

Go ahead computer, put it through.

--A clear optic screen unfolds from the ceiling—Alfred appears—
ALFRED

Master Bruce...

BRUCE

Yes, Alfred—what’s going on?

ALFRED

I’m not sure—you’d better get here quick sir. Something is happening.

BRUCE

I’ll be right there.

--Alfred cuts transmission—
COMPUTER

End of transmission, Mr….

BRUCE

Computer, channel four.

--Channel Four news. Reporter on screen.—
REPORTER #1

This just in, we have breaking news here in the news room. There have been five explosions just outside downtown Gotham. In the last ten minutes several buildings have been completely…

BRUCE

Oh my god.

--Bruce sits in his chair—
BRUCE

Chair.
--Bruce slides down to his portable tunnel—

--Camera cuts back to the optic screen—
REPORTER #1

…channel four news room has just learned that police have found six more young women all dead, they were found in a motel room…

--Portable tunnel is shown Bruce traveling to the cave. Alfred appears on the screen—
ALFRED

Sir, this looks extremely bad.

BRUCE

Yes it does, Alfred, yes it does.

INT. Batcave
--Bruce and Alfred are looking ove a huge grid map of Gotham—it’s positioned vertically.-
BRUCE

Here are the five explosion sites (remote control prompts the markers on the screen)

ALFRED

They are all on the upper east side of Gotham. Near the water. Do you think there is a connection?

BRUCE

There has to be. I’m going down there…

ALFRED

How do you know?

BRUCE

Just look at what is right in the middle of those five sites.

(Cut to the tunnel where the batmobile escapes the cave. Camera is over head, watching the batmobile zoom by)
(Cut back to Alfred)
ALFRED

Zoom in.
(the building is enlarged but still not visible)

ALFRED

Again.
(this time the building reads: Pier 84)

ALFRED

Oh my god.

INT. Batmobile
GORDON

Batman, we’ve got hell at the door. Not only do we have this crap down here, but we found six more prostitutes, all dead. Repeat of the murders before. What the hell is going on?

BATMAN

I don’t know Gordon, I’m on my way. That Latino man did this.

GORDON

How do you know? And why? There is nothing down here.

BATMAN

Pier 84 is right in the middle of those sites, it’s a signal—but I don’t know what of.

GORDON

My God, you’re right. Jesus.

BATMAN

I’m listening to the police ban. Nothing has happened since these explosions. He is waiting to make his move. Is Bullock there?

BULLOCK

I’m right here bat.

BATMAN

Did you go up to Arkham?

BULLOCK

Yeah. I got nothing on your Latino.

BATMAN

Nothing at all, this guy is definitely outside. Quite outside. What was the activity level down there?

BULLOCK

Stable. Dr. Burton said that things were pretty smooth.

BATMAN

So Arkham is pretty tight?

BULLOCK

I wouldn’t say that. Do you remember a man named Nygma?

(close up on Batman’s eyes)
BATMAN

Edward Nygma, The RIddler—yes. What about him?

BULLOCK

I don’t think you fried him back at Claw Island.

BATMAN

I wondered about that. He is nothing without the brain waves.

BULLOCK
True. However, Dr. Burton told me that Nygma is fully capable of recovering every single one of those minds.
BATMAN

As long as Nygma is kept locked up, like he has been—no problems. Okay?

BULLOCK

Yeah, nice job on those women this morning, bat.

BATMAN

Screw you, Bullock.(pause) I’m on my way.

--Batman turns the police ban up—
**fuzz**…multiple explosions on the east side, robbery on 42nd, stolen helicopter—in flight, gang related vandalism…
BATMAN

Wait a second.

(flash back to BANE escaping on the helicopter)
--BATMAN jacks the steering wheel and ramps off a bridge onto the road below—
INT. ARKHAM ASLYM
--An employee takes a tray from the kitchen. Walks down the long corridor. Comes to a door. Slides the tray into the slot.—
WORKER #1

There you are, Edward.

EDWARD

(softly)Thank you.

(Edward forks the Cornish hen. Finds a folded piece of paper inside)
EDWARD

(reading)Watch and Wait –B. (long pause) Goody goody, there’s going to be some excitement tonight.

INT. Batmobile
BATMAN

Alfred, I need you to start up the new navigational system that we just hooked up.

ALFRED
Yes, sir. What are we looking for?
--Program boots up—
(on a large circular, black table. The infrared system enables and shows and a 3-d layout of Gotham City)
BATMAN

We’re looking for a helicopter in the air.

ALFRED

I’ve got the city up and running. (pushes a button) It’s scanning the air traffic now.

BATMAN

Alfred, just please tell me there isn’t a helicopter heading west.

ALFRED
The navigator is reading one craft in the air. (pause) It’s a helicopter of some sort.
BATMAN

Where is it going?

ALFRED

It’s heading west.

(Bullock and Gordon are directing traffic at one of the sites, east side of town. Gordon’s phone rings)
GORDON

Yes Batman.

BATMAN

Listen, you’ve got to pack up now. You need to move all of your units to the west side of town.

GORDON

What the hell is going on?

BATMAN

The Latino man caused those explosions, and now I know why. The whole entire police force is on the East side of town. He is heading West now.

BULLOCK

Where is he going?

BATMAN

He and his men stole a chopper. They are heading for Arkham Asylum.

BULLOCK

Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

BATMAN

Well, we both have question marks on our minds…

BULLOCK

Holy shit.

BATMAN

You have to get everyone over there now. I’m about seven miles out.

The Asylum is about seventeen miles out from you.
GORDON

Good luck Batman. You make sure that Edward Nygma does not escape.

BATMAN

No promises. I’m out.

INT. Helicopter
TROGG

Looks like your plan worked Magic Man. (listening to police ban) There isn’t a cop around here for twelve miles.

BANE
And the Bat?
BIRD
He will be here. Watch and wait.
(laughter)
BANE

Pilot, are we ready?

ZOMBIE
Ready indeed. Let’s kick this shit.
BIRD

(to bane) You can begin.

--Akrham Asylum is shown. Sort of a helicopter POV shot. Bane positions himself on the edge of the chopper and reveals a rocket launcher.
BANE
Load me up.
--Trogg loads—
INT. Arkham Asylum
(Dr. Burton and some other colleagues are eating. Helicopter can be heard.)
BURTON

What is that?

--Huge explosion, rocks the room. Fire, smoke.-
(Dr. Burton crawls to the wall and pushes a Large Red Button, activates alarm)
(Cut to road, cop cars zooming by. Inside the lead car, Gordon and Bullock see the alarm glow on the dash)
GORDON
Holy Shit. Step on it.
(Cut to Batmobile. Batman sees the alarm. Close up of eyes. Batmobile zooms by)
INT. Helicopter
BIRD

(To Bane) Okay, everything is in place. Malone’s Goons are down at the main level right now. They will take care of the coppers, if and when they arrive.

TROGG

Nygma’s cell is right here (points) We blow this perimeter wall here, spread the place with the nuerlizing gas and break Nygma out, using that (points to a crate).

BANE

I will get Nygma. Bird, you will man the mini from up above here. (pause) Watch for the

Bat.
INT. Batmobile
(Alfred is on the LCD screen from the steering wheel)
BATMAN

Alfred, I need you to tap into the mainframe computer—check the records.

ALFRED

Check the records for what, sir?

BATMAN

Edward Nygma’s cell, look at the inmate list and tell me where he is.

EXT. Arkham Asylum
Wide Shot. Showing the helicopter flying over Arkham, spotlights, sirens and alarms are going off.
INT. Arkham Asylum
(Thugs are shoving the doctors into a safe house. Lots of thugs—10 to 12)
Thug #1

(pushing) Get in there. (pause) Get down, shut up.

Thug #2

We don’t wanna hear nothin’ from no-body!

(All the sudden a crash from the high window in the ceiling. It’s dark, but spotlights make out a shadowy figure flying down)
Thug #1

It’s the Bat! Shoot him!

(Guns go off. Smoke clears and a dark body is on the ground)
Thug #2

Check him.

(Thugs reveal that it isn’t batman. It’s another thug, barely alive. He has a gas canister strapped to him)
Thug #2

What the hell?

(Gas disperses and knocks thugs out)
