Dance Development Officer


Objective and purpose of role:

To offer Dance opportunities to children in schools, the wider community and target the 50+ age group

Knowledge



Knowledge of traditional dance styles and developments in contemporary dance.
An understanding of the cultural context of the Western Isles






Skills and Abilities



Skilled in at least 3 dance forms
Good organisational and communication skills
Ability to work independently

Ability to communicate in Gaelic
Aptitude for working in a community setting

Education/Experience


Degree in dance (or proven track record as a practising dance artist).
Experience of delivering dance workshops and of programming dance education projects


Experience of running dance workshops in community settings

Other Factors


Willingness to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Check
Full driving licence and access to a vehicle






  1. Plan a programme of work which encourages inclusion. Liaise with schools, youth clubs, day care centre staff etc to plan sessions appropriate to the needs of each client group.




  1. Ensuring that the traditional dance of the area regains and maintains the high profile and status it has previously enjoyed.




  1. Set up and deliver classes in classical, modern and traditional dance.

  2. Support and advise existing dance schools and tutors.

  3. Identifying suitable tutors both locally based and from further afield to run classes.

  4. Contract and supervise free-lance dance artists to carry out project work.

  5. Carry out administration of projects, monitor budgets and keep clear financial records.

  6. Make funding applications for project work.

  7. Clearly communicate the work with participants, partners, funders and the communities.

  8. Develop opportunities for participants to showcase work in central venues and raise the profile of dance education in the islands.

  9. Organising trips to dance events out-with the area.




  1. To liaise effectively with colleagues and to provide timely reports, evaluations and marketing information.




  1. Liaise with other agencies (including Health Promotion, Community Education, Sport and Health etc) and work in partnership where appropriate.

  2. Keep up to date with national dance initiatives and work with bodies involved in the development of dance.

  3. Other reasonable duties as determined in discussion with the Line Managers and Steering group.

There is potential for the post to continue beyond the initial contract, subject to funding.
