Choose one of the following prompts:

  • Your school is considering offering long-term loans of laptop computers, but only a limited number of computers is available. They will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement. Think about how this plan would affect different groups of students. Would you support it? Defend your position in an essay, using examples to support your opinion.

  • Our school is considering a community service requirement. Students will be required to perform twenty hours of community service per semester. Think about the potential benefits and drawbacks. Do you support the plan? Write an essay defending your position, and use examples to illustrate your opinion.

  • At the end of the month, your community will discontinue job-training programs for at-risk youth. Community leaders argue that job training can easily be taken over by local businesses. Think about the pros and cons of allowing private businesses to run these programs. Write an essay either defending or contradicting the community’s decision. Use examples to support your opinion.

  • Your school board is trying to decide whether to reduce its vocational education program in favor of adding more computer courses. Think about how this change could affect students and the community as a whole. Would you support this plan? Write an essay defending your position, and support your opinion with examples.

  • Your local school board is seeking ideas to improve your school. These ideas will be discussed during meetings with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other interested parties. The changes proposed by students will be seriously considered since students are the reason for the schools existence. Choose one change that might improve your school for all students. Write a persuasive essay explaining why your suggested change will be an improvement for your school. Give at reasons to support your suggestion.

  • Since schools have seen a rise in violence, stealing, and discipline problems, many schools and communities are considering banning the sale or use of violent video games within their city limits. Think about how you would feel if your community had a complete ban on violent video games. Are there benefits or drawbacks to eliminating violent video games from a community? Now write an essay in which you persuade the reader that violent video games should or should not be banned from individual communities. Defend your position with specific reasons supported by several detailed examples.

  • Gun control is a continuing controversy in the United States. Many people argue that it is their right to own guns for protection of life, liberty and property, while others feel that guns in the hands of Americans lead to more violence. How could communities benefit from stricter laws concerning the ownership of guns? How could these laws impact individual freedoms? At what point does the good of the community outweigh the good of the individual? Now write an essay in which you persuade the reader to take part in political efforts regarding proposed gun control laws and/or efforts to control firearms in the hands of citizens.
