| GIMEL Atu Number Atu Letter&Translation Attributed Constellation Associated Quotation from Liber AL vel Legis II ג – Camel Camelopardalis, Indus AL:I.9 Worship then the Khabs, and behold my light shed over you The position of the couple depicted in this Atu presents the vertical letter in horizontal format. The vertical rendering of the letter easily depicts a giraffe indicated by the association of this Atu with the constellation Camelopardalis, which translates as giraffe but which has been mistaken fora camel. Both animals are of the African continent and can hold a large supply of water. But it is the giraffe that reaches to the sky. The top half of Camelopardalis, shown in the Uranographia of Johann Bode (1801). Also included is the now-obsolete constellation of Rangifer , the reindeer. In the Constellation Indus, the Indian is depicted holding spears or arrows as though hunting. It is not known whether he is supposed to be a native of the East Indies, or possibly southern Africa or Madagascar (where the Dutch fleet stayed for several months on their way east perhaps the figure is symbolic, representing all the indigenous peoples the explorers encountered on their various travels, from South America to the Indies. The constellations brightest stars are of third magnitude, but none are named. Indus, an Indian holding a spear and arrows, as shown in the Uranographia of Johann Bode. Indus is as the hunter who hunts for power. The passive position of the male in the coitus depicted in this Atu suggests that it is the male who is working the office of the Scarlet Woman as he is the receiver of the power he hunts.
