Civil War Study Guide – Unit test September 18th

Please study the following vocabulary words, events and people. More information can be found in each students’ social studies notebook. They have taken notes and have short paragraphs that contain all the information they need to study. More information will be added to the notebook as we work through the remaining sections of the Civil War Unit.



SS5H1 The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War.

  1. Identify Uncle Tom’s Cabin and John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, and

explain how each of these events was related to the Civil War.

  1. Discuss how the issues of states’ rights and slavery increased tensions between

the North and South.

  1. Identify major battles and campaigns: Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, the Atlanta

Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Appomattox Court House.

d. Describe the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant,

Jefferson Davis, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

e. Describe the effects of war on the North and South.

Flashcards have been made for each of these vocabulary words:

Civil War – a war fought between people of the same country

Abolitionist – someone who wanted to end slavery

Slave Statestate that allowed slavery

Free State – state that did not allow slavery

Border State – slave state that remained part of the Union, they did not secede

Fugitivea person who is running away

Secession – when part of a country leaves or breaks off from the rest (the southern states left the United States, or seceded)

Sectionalism – loyalty to one part of the country

States’ rights – idea that states, not the federal government, should make the final decisions about what affects them.

Union - another name for the United States

Confederacy – name chosen for the states that left the Union at the time of the Civil War

Emancipation – Given by Abraham Lincoln, the freeing of enslaved people



Total War – war strategy of destroying the enemies resources

Know the following events of the Civil War:

Ft. Sumter: Start of the war

Gettysburg: turning point of the war, the North gained victory and began to win the Civil War

The Atlanta Campaign: Vital industrial and railway supply center in the south. The Union was able to cut supply routes to Confederate troops.

Sherman’s March to the Sea: After capturing Atlanta, William T. Sherman and the Union Army marched south to the sea to capture Savannah, GA. They used total warfare to destroy and burn much of the land they marched through.

Appomattox Court House: General Lee’s surrender to General Grant

Know these major leaders:

Abraham Lincoln
President of the U.S.
Opposed slavery (Emancipation Proclamation)
Believe the U.S. was one nation, not individual states

Ulysses S. Grant
General of the Union army

Jefferson Davis
President of the Confederate States

Robert E. Lee

General of the Confederate Army



Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
One of the most skilled Confederate generals
