FIRST ROUND: DYNAMITE KID vs. NIKOLAI VOLKOFF Dynamite scores the surprise win in six seconds.
FIRST ROUND: “POLISH POWER” IVAN PUTSKI vs. RANDY “MACHO MAN” SAVAGE Randy gets the Ric Flair pin to win.
FIRST ROUND: RICKY “THE DRAGON” STEAMBOAT vs. DAVEY BOY SMITH Good but seriously abbreviated match.
FIRST ROUND: JUNKYARD DOG vs. IRON SHEIK Why is this match getting more time than the previous four?
FIRST ROUND: TERRY FUNK vs. MOONDOG SPOT Spotty gets a major upset win in 17 seconds. I think this is a pre-internet version of a swerve, as JYD and Terry Funk were feuding at this point, so a Funk win here would have had the hated enemies fighting each other in the next round.
FIRST ROUND: TITO SANTANA vs. MAGNIFICENT MURACO Weird ending.
FIRST ROUND: “MISTER WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF vs. COWBOY BOB ORTON Cowboy Bob tries to claim Heenan’s bounty on Orndorff, but gets himself DQ’ed in the process.
QUARTERFINAL: ADRIAN ADONIS vs. DYNAMITE KID Good match!
QUARTERFINAL: RANDY SAVAGE vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT Over a year before this match would mean something, these two put on a great match in short time.
QUARTERFINAL: JUNKYARD DOG vs. MOONDOG SPOT Weird squash match where JYD kicks Spot’s butt so quickly that the referee doesn’t have time to get to the ring, so JYD counts his own pin.
QUARTERFINAL: TITO SANTANA vs. PAUL ORNDORFF Ends in a DCO to give JYD a bye to the finals.
WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. ROWDY RODDY PIPER Bob Orton interferes, but Paul Orndorff makes the save.
SEMI-FINAL: DYNAMITE KID vs. RANDY SAVAGE GREAT (but short) match!
FINAL ROUND: RANDY SAVAGE vs. JUNKYARD DOG A beaten and exhausted Savage is counted out, giving the win to the wrestler who has competed a grand total of 4 minutes the entire night. An enraged Jesse Ventura enters the ring to gripe about this, setting up his very brief return to the ring in early ’86.

WWF TV COMPILATION, JULY 1990
No joke, one of my favorite tapes. Matches with an asterisk are taped from Huntington, WV, June 26, 1990. Sentimental value here…this was the first live event I ever attended, and I can’t count the number of A+ papers I’ve got in English classes over the years typing about this night.
“MACHO KING” RANDY SAVAGE vs. JUMPING JIM BRUNZELL
WWF UPDATE Hulk Hogan is getting better! I guess lighting all those incense candles around my house worked. Next week, Hulk Hogan will announce whether or not he’s retiring. The Rockers, Hillbilly Jim, Slick, Brutus Beefcake, Jimmy Hart, and Earthquake give their two cents on this decision.
*TITO SANTANA vs. PEZ WHATLEY Pez’s entrance to the ring isn’t shown, since he’s a jobber of course. It’s too bad because we laughed out loud when we saw his entrance costume. He was wearing a crossing guard’s vest, I kid you not.
MISTER PERFECT vs. MARK THOMAS Preceded by a hysterical exchange between Gorilla and Bobby. I had only been watching wrestling for a year so I didn’t get the joke when I first watched it, but Bobby calls Perfect “one of the greatest wrestling machines,” and Gorilla replies “He was one of the Machines?”
*DEMOLITION explains why they’ve added their third member, Crush.
JAKE “THE SNAKE” ROBERTS vs. PAUL DIAMOND
TUGBOAT vs. TONY BURTON
AKEEM vs. BRADY BOONE
THE BROTHER LOVE SHOW WITH NIKOLAI VOLKOFF I don’t care what anyone says, I thought Brother Love was hilarious. Jim Duggan presents Nikolai with an American flag.
HERCULES & MACPHERSON vs. ORIENT EXPRESS Gorilla never gets around to telling us MacPherson’s first name. Kind of a weird angle…MacPherson’s partner no-showed, so Hercules volunteered to stand in. Orient Express wins, then attacks Hercules, and Paul Roma makes the save to set up Hercules and Roma as Power & Glory, although it was still another month before they turned heel.
KOKO B. WARE vs. PLAYBOY BUDDY ROSE Bobby and Gorilla have a funny post-match discussion about Koko’s entrance theme.
*WARLORD vs. GARY JACKSON
SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA vs. HAKU
*BUSHWHACKERS vs. TOM BENNETT & KENT CARLSON Heenan calls the Bushwhackers the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce :-D
HULK HOGAN cuts a really long promo to announce that he won’t be retiring.
*EARTHQUAKE vs. SCOTT COLTON A year later I bought a copy of the WWF Wrestling Challenge home game and actually marked out because this match was pictured on the inside, which is about as close to famous as Huntington, WV gets if you aren’t talking about college football (and even then it’s kind of iffy).
*LEGION OF DOOM vs. AL BURKE & BOB BRADLEY Yeah, you’re damn right I was there for LOD’s WWF debut!!! Talk about a mark-out moment…Of course, this was before the WWF misbooked and mismanaged them all to hell and everyone stopped caring.
*BAD NEWS BROWN vs. BRIAN COSTELLO I’ve quoted my friend Jeremy a lot in these match summaries, but if you ever meet him, ask him to sing the lyrics to the entrance theme he wrote for Bad News. You’ll crap yourself, I promise. Just writing them here can’t even do justice. Sure, there’s no point to telling you this because you’ll never meet him, but hey, I like typing.
*NIKOLAI VOLKOFF is interviewed by Gene Okerlund. I forgot what a huge push Nikolai got when he turned face.
*HAKU vs. JIM EVANS
RUGGED RONNIE GARVIN HAWKS WWF ICE CREAM BARS Good lord I hated that name. How many guys do you know named “Ronnie” who can accurately be described as rugged? Ron, maybe, but Ronnie never.
*TITO SANTANA vs. PEZ WHATLEY Same match as earlier on the tape, but it’s here in case you prefer the commentary team of Monsoon & Heenan to the team of Hayes & Mooney.
TED DIBIASE GOES TO COBB COUNTY, GA and interviews an ex-convict who says Big Bossman attacked and beat him nightly while he was in prison. Sort of funny to think about since Bossman was only a face for about five months at this point, which wasn’t a very long time back in 1990. Beforehand, Bossman would have been bragging about doing this sort of thing.
*WARLORD vs. GARY JACKSON Same match as before. Hey, the WWF coming to WV was a big damn deal, who cared if we recorded the same match twice?
*JUMPING JIM BRUNZELL vs. BLACK BART JIP. The curtain-jerk of my first live event. A couple of notes here…my dad and uncle, who aren’t very big fans, accompanied us on this night. The match opened with Bart slapping Brunzell in the face, and my uncle turned to Dad and yelled, “Hey Roger, these guys are really getting into it!” Second, Brunzell wrestled three times at this show, and we all literally laughed out loud the third time he came to the ring.
AL PEREZ vs. JIM POWERS A main event in any arena in Bizarro World.
THE BROTHER LOVE SHOW WITH HART FOUNDATION Interesting because the Harts match the set. Demolition comes out and a beatdown ensues.
*HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN vs. PAUL DIAMOND
GENIUS vs. MIKE SHELTON Apparently after three months, Genius’s hair still hasn’t grown back after getting cut by Brutus Beefcake, so he wears a blonde wig and amateur wrestling headgear.
*BUSHWHACKERS vs. TOM BENNETT & KENT CARLSON Same as before. Again, this was a big deal for us.
*RUGGED RONNIE GARVIN vs. “MILLION DOLLAR MAN” TED DIBIASE Garvin loses, probably because the ice cream bars made him logy.
ALSO FEATURES “WWF EVENT CENTER” SEGMENTS with Akeem & Slick, Hercules, Orient Express (oh yeah, these guys are from the Orient), Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Koko B. Ware, Barbarian, Big Boss Man, Genius, Randy Savage & Sherri.

MID-ATLANTIC TV TITLE TOURNAMENT FINALS REMATCH: SWEET EBONY DIAMOND vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE with a one hour time limit. Diamond wins the title and announces that he’s so proud of his accomplishment he’s taking off his mask. He does, but before you can stand up and yell “Hey, it’s the Rock’s dad!” Valentine attacks.
NO DQ: JERRY BLACKWELL & BIG JOHN STUDD vs. BARON VON RASCHKE & CRUSHER JIP.
VERNE GAGNE talks about his impending retirement.
AWA PRESIDENT STANLEY BLACKBURN says the AWA board of directors has been in many meetings to determine what to do with the AWA title now that Gagne is retiring. Eventually it was announced that the title would just be handed to Nick Bockwinkle instead of having a tournament, which is such a lazy bush-league move it’s no wonder this promotion couldn’t survive. Folks, if you have more than eight people on your roster, you need to hold a tournament for a vacant title.
TITO SANTANA vs. SHEIK ADNAN EL-KAISSE Ends in a DDQ pull-apart fight.
RIC FLAIR IS ATTACKED by Ivan Koloff and the Minnesota Wrecking Crew.
NO DQ: ROWDY RODDY PIPER & “Superfly” JIMMY SNUKA vs. RIC FLAIR & DEWEY ROBERTSON Surreal to see Piper & Snuka as a heel tag team.
AWA WORLD TITLE: VERNE GAGNE vs. NICK BOCKWINKLE Verne’s farewell match. He’s leaving the active wrestling scene to focus his energies on running the promotion into the ground.
ROWDY RODDY PIPER vs. TONY PERISI Tony runs out of the crowd and destroys Piper in a two-minute squash. I have no idea what the angle is leading to this.
JERRY BLACKWELL vs. BRAD RHENGINS Jerry replaces a jobber in what was supposed to be a squash because he’s sick of all the hype surrounding Rhengins.
AWA WORLD TITLE: NICK BOCKWINKLE vs. JUMPING JIM BRUNZELL Last seven minutes of a one-hour draw(!)
UNITED STATES TITLE: ROWDY RODDY PIPER vs. WAHOO MCDANIEL 8-mm footage, JIP.
STEEL CAGE MID-ATLANTIC TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. IVAN KOLOFF 8-mm footage, JIP. Ole & Gene Anderson throw Ivan’s chain in the cage, but Ricky Steamboat runs in to make the save. He gets a beating, too.
NWA WORLD TITLE: HARLEY RACE vs. DUSTY RHODES Dusty wins the title, and the crowd goes insane!
JERRY BLACKWELL vs. BRAD RHENGINS Different match than above. Brad is attacked after the bell, but Hulk Hogan makes the save. Listening to the crowd’s reaction to his arrival, I’m shocked Verne Gagne couldn’t see a future in this guy.
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER & RODDY PIPER ATTACK WAHOO MCDANIEL The attack gets so gruesome that Mid-Atlantic has to do some really weird altering to the videotape to hide the blood and meet broadcast standards.
“YOU ASKED FOR IT” profiles the Sheik. We see footage of the Sheik’s matches, while his American spokesman, Ed Farhat (whom we never see on camera, of course) discusses his wild nature.
ADRIAN ADONIS & JESSE VENTURA vs. GREG GAGNE & JIM BRUNZELL
BAD BAD LEROY BROWN vs. OLE ANDERSON Who’s bright idea was it to name a wrestler after a song character who hangs out in Chicago nightclubs and likes to gamble and fight, and dress him up like a damn hillbilly?
“BOOGIE WOOGIE MAN” JIMMY VALIANT is profiled in a music video. The song played here is really catchy.

ROWDY RODDY PIPER vs. JAY YOUNGBLOOD Goes to a time limit draw, and Roddy attacks Jay post-match.
TITO SANTANA vs. KEN PATERA
MID-ATLANTIC TITLE: OUTLAW RON BASS vs. IVAN KOLOFF Weird to watch a main event match that dates back twenty years ago that ends three minutes in with a Sportz-Entertainment finish.
TITO SANTANA BEATS UP BOBBY HEENAN This is one of the more vicious beatings that I’ve seen Heenan take as a manager. I’m not surprised that he got up, but I’m fairly surprised he lasted another full decade after this.
PAUL JONES & JAKE ROBERTS vs. OLE ANDERSON & SUPER DESTROYER Jake unmasks Destroyer, but he gets covered with a towel before we see his face.
OUTLAW RON BASS vs. IVAN KOLOFF
ERNIE LADD & WILD SAMOANS vs. JUNKYARD DOG, DUSTY RHODES, & ANDRÉ THE GIANT Beginning here, the VQ takes a considerable dip. The VQ gets darker and blurrier, but it’s just clear enough that you can tell everyone apart and read captions at the bottom of the screen.

RIC FLAIR, LEGEND
RIC FLAIR PROMO MONTAGE Not necessarily Flair’s BEST promos, (how hard would those be to compile?) but it sets the mood for the tape pretty well.
NWA WORLD TITLE: DUSTY RHODES vs. RIC FLAIR with guest referee Lou Thesz. JIP; Ric wins his first World title, and having Lou Thesz be the one to hand him the belt turned out to be quite poetic, didn’t it?
NWA WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. AUSTIN IDOL JIP; Ric successfully defends the title with the aid of a Dusty finish.
“FIRE & ICE” MONTAGE Judging from the VQ this was assembled for a TV broadcast years back.
RIC DOES AN AMATEUR WRESTLING EXHIBITION and is disappointed because he isn’t even sweating against his opponents, so he challenges Barry Windham at the broadcast table for an exhibition match, and Barry gets a clean pin.
NWA WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. HARLEY RACE Third fall only. Harley wins his seventh NWA title with that God-forsaken belly-to-back suplex pin finish.
NWA WORLD TITLE: HARLEY RACE vs. RIC FLAIR from Starrcade ’83. Ric wins the belt back for reign number two.
NWA WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. DAVID VON ERICH JIP; David wins by DQ, earning a rematch. That rematch would never take place, as David was dead a month later.
NWA WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. KERRY VON ERICH Kerry wins the title.
NWA WORLD TITLE: KERRY VON ERICH vs. RIC FLAIR JIP; And Ric wins it back in Japan a month later.
“I WANNA ROCK” MONTAGE Flair’s third title reign blitzes by in a highlight reel.
RIC FLAIR vs. RICKY MORTON Closing moments of the match; the Horsemen go to the locker room afterwards and lay out all the babyfaces they can find; Flair cuts a great promo afterward.
NWA WORLD TITLE, STEEL CAGE: RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES The Dree-um reclaims the title in a solid match; listen for the soundbite from Dusty before the match where he commends Ric for being a “constinent” champion.
NWA WORLD TITLE: DUSTY RHODES vs. RIC FLAIR Tully Blanchard attacks Dusty, injuring him, setting up…
NWA WORLD TITLE: DUSTY RHODES vs. RIC FLAIR Very rare footage from the house show where Flair defeats the injured Rhodes for his fourth World Title!
FOUR HORSEMEN vs. SUPERPOWERS & ROAD WARRIORS Baffling choice for this compilation. It’s not complete and it’s largely Flair getting his ass kicked.
NWA WORLD TITLE, STEEL CAGE: RIC FLAIR vs. JIMMY GARVIN JIP; this is the match that sets up the feud between Ric and Jimmy’s “cousin” Ron. Followed by another great Flair promo.
NWA WORLD TITLE, STEEL CAGE: RIC FLAIR vs. RON GARVIN Ric drops the NWA title to the only face on the roster who wanted it. The plan all along was for Flair to reclaim it at Starrcade, and Ron was the only face who didn’t have a problem with a lame duck reign.
MIKE ROTUNDO, BARRY WINDHAM & LIGHTNING EXPRESS vs. FOUR HORSEMEN Ron runs to ringside and dukes it out with Ric, setting up…
NWA WORLD TITLE, STEEL CAGE: RON GARVIN vs. RIC FLAIR from Starrcade ’87. Ric reclaims the NWA title for reign number five. The crowd gets a very decisive “Garvin sucks” chant going during the match, and Flair, the number-one heel in the business, gets a major face pop for reclaiming the belt.
“I AM THE WARRIOR” Reign five blitzes by in another clip reel.
RIC FLAIR CUTS A PROMO WHERE HE BASICALLY DOES EVERYTHING HE CAN TO BE A HUGE HEEL and Ricky Steamboat runs out, criticizes his lifestyle, and tears off Flair’s clothes.
NWA WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT Clipped version of Steamboat’s title win. This was the first title switch following Dusty Rhodes’ dismissal from the company, and the new management throws him a middle finger in the way of ending the match with the reverse of a Dusty finish, in this case, the dazed first referee sees Flair throw Steamboat over the top rope, but since Steamboat was able to pin Flair anyway, he lets the decision stand.
THE DANGER ZONE with guest Ric Flair. Listen for Paul E.’s reference to Brother Love during the intro.
THE FLAIR-STEAMBOAT FEUD is recapped in a great music video.
NWA WORLD TITLE: RICKY STEAMBOAT vs. RIC FLAIR Flair becomes World Champ for the sixth time in the best wrestling match ever. Not for any outstanding spot or sequence either. It’s just a great, intense, pure wrestling match between two of the all-time greatest.
“HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT” The rest of 1989 is glossed over with more highlights. It’s too bad this is only a two-volume set. I understand that sacrifices had to be made for space purposes, but 1989 was arguably Flair’s best year.
