NLHS Speech and Debate
Computer Guidelines

North Lamar is pleased to be able to provide students in the speech and debate program with a laptop for their use at tournaments if a personal laptop is not an option. However, with this privilege comes responsibility; because the district has spent a great deal of money on our laptops, we must make them last as long as possible. Please make note of the following guidelines for use of these computers and understand that your use of a school computer at a tournament may be revoked at any time. Please remember that this is not your personal computer.

1. When you remove a computer from the school building, you take on the responsibility for ensuring that that computer gets back to the school in the same condition as it was taken. Do not ask someone else to “watch” your computer or to take your computer back to the bus. You should do it. If your computer is damaged or lost, you will be responsible for repairing it or replacing it.

2. Do not download a game to the computer or play a game online.

3. Do not access chat rooms or forums unless they are specifically related to debate.

4. Do not change the password on the computer.

5. Do not change the names of the desktop icons. While it might seem funny to change the name of the internet explorer icon to “that funny looking e,” it’s possible that whoever has the computer after you graduate might not understand all the witty names.

6. You may change the wallpaper and/or the screensaver. However, please use common sense and be professional when selecting these things. Your judges will be able to see your computer screen during a round and your choices reflect on North Lamar.

7. Do not remove a computer that is not assigned to you from the classroom without specific written permission from Lady H. If you take a computer from the classroom at any time other than on tournament days, please leave a post-it note on the inside door of Lady H’s closet with your name, computer number, and the date. When you return the computer, throw away the post-it note.

8. When you are finished with your computer:

a. Shut it down. (Just closing the lid does not shut it down, and runs down the
battery).
b. Never wrap the cord around the charger. Fold the cord. Place the charger and
the cord in the front pocket of the bag.
c. Put the computer with the hinge facing down (the part that opens should be at | the top of the bag). This prevents you from accidentally scratching the
screen with whatever is at the bottom of the bag.

9. Never loan computers to anyone who is not a debater.

10. Do not use the computers for personal business without Lady H’s approval.

11. When possible, always plug in the computer when using it. This way, when you need the battery, it will be fully charged.

12. Take caution when naming files and folders. Expletives and derogatory terms are inappropriate and inconsistent with the spirit of NLHS debate.

13. This is not your personal computer. Do not install itunes or any other music service. Do not save personal materials on the computer. Do not use the webcam to take charming pictures of yourself and your friends.

14. All documents should be saved to dropbox. Only shortcuts should be saved on the desktop.

Please sign below to indicate that you have read, understand, and agree to the terms of your use of NLHS Debate Laptops.
