By the end of the s, approximately 200 hosts were connected to the
ARPAnet. By the end of the s the number of hosts connected to the public Internet, a confederation of networks looking much like today's Internet, would reach 100,000. The s would be a time of tremendous growth. Much of the growth in the early s resulted from several distinct efforts to create computer networks linking universities together. BITnet (because it's their network) provided email and file transfers among several universities in the Northeast.
