This was an outstanding broom because of it's ability to produce hundreds of dwarf to miniature seedlings. It was a sad day in 1992 when we discovered this broom has been destroyed. It always produced a great crop of new seeds. R. Dykstra is the person that discovered this broom and raised so many outstanding seedlings from this broom. Harper text. Randy Dykstra of Fulton, IL raised hundreds of seedlings from this broom. Many have been dispersed thoughout the conifer world. Nearly all of the them after the first selection have turned out to be very compact and exellent plants. This winter photo of this plant taken on 2/3/2003 was 18 years of age. Herbst text.

'Pretty Carole'.
1993 - Chub Harper, Moline, IL gave a witches' broom seedling from Larix decidua 'Lanark' to Dennis Groh of Dearborn Heights, MI. After growing this in his garden Mr. Groh recognized this plant as a superior very dwarf selection of this species. Over time it has been grafted and these plants have been distributed to other collectors and nurseries so you can find this plant listed in many conifer catalogs. The plant was originally referred to as 'Dennis Groh' and can be found listed under that name. In 2006 it was renamed to 'Pretty Carole' in honor of Dennis Groh's wife. The plant itself echos it's namesake. It makes an excellent small garden plant and one that stays in scale with the surroundings. Low mounding dwarf form with delicate light green foilage. ACS text.

This cultivar has been listed under names as Larix x eurolepis and Larix kaempferi and is currently listed in some references under these incorrect names. Large growing in a very irregular and erratic manner. No two plants are alike in form. Adds a real focal point in the landscape where the space is available. Robust twigs propel the branches up and out from this vigorous, spreading, deciduous plant. Branches eventually arch down and cover the ground. Fresh green in spring, golden in autumn.
