Project Name: Super Bowl Advertising Project




Overview: Students will learn advertising terminology and concepts while applying them to this year’s Super Bowl commercials.


TEKS/Objectives:

(25) The student understands the promotional concepts and strategies needed to communicate information about products, services, images, and ideas to achieve a desired outcome. The student is expected to:

(A) explain the communication processes as used in promotional activities;

(B) evaluate types of promotion;

(C) consider the concept of promotional mix;

(D) define the role of promotion as a marketing function;

(E) list the elements of the promotional mix;

(F) describe the use of business ethics in promotion;

(G) describe the use of technology in the promotion function;

(H) explore the regulation of promotion;

(I) illustrate types of advertising media;

(J) convey word-of-mouth channels used to communicate with targeted audiences;

(K) explain the nature of direct marketing channels;

(L) model communication channels used in sales promotion; and

(M) describe communication channels used in public relations activities.

(26) The student knows that advertising is the paid form of non personal communication about an identified sponsor's products. The student is expected to:

(A) illustrate types of advertising media;

(B) differentiate between product and institutional advertising; and



(C) identify and evaluate elements of an advertisement.

Software:

  • Macs- iMovie software (movie making software for Apple OS)

  • PCs- Movie Maker (movie making software for Windows OS)

  • Video or Flip Camera

  • Web Projector to showcase commercials & PowerPoint presentation

Materials Required: Super Bowl XLV Advertising Analysis handout, Introduction to Advertising PowerPoint, 2 Super Bowl Articles from AdAge.com, Super Bowl Commercial Project Guidelines, Storyboard, Rubric/Peer Evaluation Form, PC or Apple computer with Internet access


Prerequisite Skills: Students have fundamental understanding of the Marketing Mix.


Time Required: 2 weeks (50 minute class periods) or 1 week (90 minute class periods)


Procedure:

  • Bell Ringer: Class Discussion of Super Bowl related articles from AdAge.com

  • Introduction to Advertising- Class Instruction/Lecture & Notes

  • View Commerials- www.fanhouse.com (this is one of several possible websites where commercials may be viewed for free)

  • Students individually assess & analyze Super Bowl Ads & rank according to their favorites (handout)

  • Students will collaborate in teams to create their own Super Bowl Advertisement for Doritos

Closure: View & discuss student commercials (Class Vote) & individual students will complete peer evaluations

Evaluation: Completed Commercial Analysis Handout & Students Created Commercials


Differentiation Strategies: Alter based on individual needs, buddy system, extension of time, reduction of work.
