INCIDENT

For the last 7-8 months, there was a sudden rise in the thefts of old Maruti cars in various parts of Delhi and Lodhi Colony area was particularly targeted by the gang. In order to prevent the crime and to bust the gang involved, the affected areas in South Delhi were specially picketed with increased police manpower. A few special anti car theft pickets were also deployed in the area of Lodhi Colony. Besides, a team was also deputed to gather intelligence regarding the movements of active auto-lifters involved in the recent spurt of auto thefts in the area.

TEAM & ARREST

The police team of Police StationLodhi Colony comprising SI Manoj Sharma, SI Pawan Tomar, HC Ramphool, Constables Ashok, Arvind, Satbir and Neeraj led by Inspector Rajender Singh, SHO/Lodhi Colony under the supervision of Shri Shibesh Singh, ACP/Lodhi Colony activated its sources and started laying traps on the basis of information gathered. The efforts done by the staff of Lodhi Colony bore quick results and they got a specific intelligence that a few members of the gang would come to the Police Station area to strike again in the stolen Maruti cars. Two specific pickets were deployed on the basis of intelligence gathered, one at SCOPE Complex Chowk on the road leading to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and another near Pragati Vihar Hostel in CGO Complex area. At about 7.15 p.m. on 06.09.2008, the team deployed at Lal Masjid Picket signalled a white Maruti car bearing registration No.DL-5-C-1606. But the driver of the car did not stop the car at the signal and sped towards Lodhi Road. The staff acted swiftly and followed the fleeing car and managed to stop it at some distance. On verification, the car was found to be stolen from the area of PS DBG Road. Further interrogation and search of the accused person led the recovery of 6 grams of narcotic substance from his possession. Two cases, one for the possession of stolen vehicle and other for the possession of narcotic substances were registered at Police Station Lodhi Colony vide FIR Nos. 206/08 and 207/08 against the arrested person viz. Nabi Hussain.
INTERROGATION

On sustained interrogation, Nabi the desperate auto lifter disclosed of having been involved in more than 1000 cases of auto thefts in his entire crime career of 32 years. He started his criminal career in the year 1976 when he was just 18 years old. He had been arrested several times in the past and spent a good time in jail. He has already been convicted in more than 20 cases so far. In his earlier days, he used to steal every type of car with his other notorious gang members namely Md. Qayum and others and would dispose off them in various parts of the Western U.P. But for the last few years he preferred to work all alone to avoid any police dragnet. In recent times he got addicted to drugs. In order to fulfil his cravings for Drugs, he started stealing old Maruti cars and selling the cars and their accessories.

MODUS-OPERANDI

During the personal search of Nabi Hussain a master key was recovered that was being used to lock open the parked Maruti cars. He specifically targeted old models of Maruti cars as the master key was specifically designed for the purpose. As the Lodhi Colony area houses a lot of government offices and other vital installations, it was easy for him to steal the cars as the office-goers usually enter in their offices in the morning and return only in the evening. Thus, he used to have a good time for the disposal of stolen cars and accessories as the police only receive information of theft mostly in the evening. After theft of cars, he would first remove the accessories of the cars and thereafter leave these abandoned vehicles on the roadside. The accessories were sold to a Kabadi namely Abid s/o Shariff based in Sarojini Nagar. He used to remove stereo from the cars and disposed off these stolen stereos to the three-wheeler and tempo drivers on roadside on throw away prices. After committing thefts of motorcycles, he would remove batteries and dispose off these stolen batteries in the area of Trans-Yamuna.
