California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)

Native American Contact List

Date Revised: March 7, 2011

Note: This list is intended for use by Registered Professional Foresters (RPFs), CAL FIRE Project Managers, CAL FIRE’s Certified Archaeological Surveyors, and Consulting Archaeologists in their work to effectively consult with California Native American Tribes during the development and review of Timber Harvesting Plans (THPS) and other CAL FIRE Projects. As of August 1, 2009, the CAL FIRE staff archaeologist assigned to maintain this list is Richard Jenkins. Please direct any information concerning needed revisions to the list to Richard’s attention.
Since January 1, 2006 we have been posting the Native American Contact List (NACL) on the CAL FIRE Archaeology Program Web Site in three formats: HTML, MS Word, and PDF. Several list users requested multiple formats to better accommodate their needs. Recent changes in state agency web site protocols issued by the Governor’s office eliminated the option for HTML format display. As of February 2008, the NACL list is available in two formats: MS Word and PDF. The MS Word format enables the use of “Compare documents” feature in Word. This tool allows users to quickly search for changes to the previous issue of the list. In order to see recent changes, open the latest NACL file in MS Word. Then use the “Compare documents” function found under “Tools: Track Changes” menu. Choose the old NACL file saved on your computer. A new window will open with the changes highlighted. The NACL in Word format also facilitates cut-and-paste editing to use mail merge use and envelope preparation. Modem users should download the file to their computer instead of opening it in a browser window. Finally, the PDF format allows users who choose not to use MS Word to download a cross platform document.
This Native American Contact List was assembled by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) in consultation with the Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC). The list is authorized in California’s Forest Practice Regulations (14CCR Section 895.1) and identifies the appropriate Native American groups and individuals to be contacted in the course of preparation and review of CAL FIRE projects including but not limited to Timber Harvesting Plans. The list contains all federally recognized tribes and other appropriate contacts. Federally recognized tribes are designated with an asterisk. This list is organized by counties in alphabetical order. Project managers are responsible to notify all the listed contacts for the county containing the project if that county is designated “ALL”. Fifteen of the counties have been split into divisions with defined geographic boundaries. In those instances, project managers are responsible to notify the listed contacts in the portion of the county containing the project. The boundaries of those divisions are also provided in a set of county maps. The maps can be viewed on-line, but we recommend the desired map be printed as the printed maps provide better resolution than when viewed on-line. CAL FIRE frequently revises this list to provide the most current information available. The revision schedule will be twice per year until the vacant Archaeology Program Manager position is filled. Please contact CAL FIRE Archaeologist Richard Jenkins via email at rich.jenkins@fire.ca.gov or by telephone at (530) 224-4749 if any address changes are needed or other errors are observed.
