The incoming freshman class is not as balanced as most in our recent history with regard to gender composition. We have a record number of women deposited but there is a gap in the number of male applications and deposits. A study of the reasons for the gap will include analyzing athletic facilities, academic programs, the website, territory managers, and national trends.

The class of 2016 represents 16 states. We have seen increases (34%) in student population from states outside of Pennsylvania. Our goal of maintaining our gains in the state of New Jersey has been accomplished with 20.4% of the freshman class coming from this territory. Our challenge has been with males in the local territory which includes the Lehigh Valley and Northeastern Pennsylvania. Our goal of reengaging male students in those high schools will be accomplished by reemphasis on the importance of “winning at home”. The following chart shows enrollment by state.

We continued to demonstrate significant progress with students from diverse backgrounds. If the numbers hold, from those whose chose to report ethnicity, 17.2% of the class of 2016 will be from diverse backgrounds. We continue to identify additional avenues to recruit and retain a strong multicultural student population. In March 2012, DeSales University hosted the second annual PACAC college fair on campus which attracted more than 600 visitors. Three local high schools bused many underrepresented students to the fair. Our entire enrollment staff has focused on increasing diversity on our campus. The programs offered through the office of international learning and the student life office also assists DeSales in reaching its objective of 20% composition in the freshman class of multicultural student population by 2015.

Transfer students continue to be essential to reaching our enrollment goals. Twenty-five transfers arrived on campus for spring 2012 and another 100 are anticipated for fall 2012. These students are an integral part of our academic and student life programs because they bring rich experiences from community colleges throughout our region and four year institutions throughout the nation. They bring new ideas and valuable dialogue to the classrooms and beyond.
In November 2010, DeSales University was accepted for membership to the common application. Common application is a not-for-profit membership organization that, since its founding 35 years ago, is committed to providing reliable services that promote equity, access, and integrity in the college application process. Common application allows students to apply online and send to any of its 400 members. DeSales University membership in the common application has aided in increasing our applicant pool by 6%. Forty-nine percent (1,097) of our applications were received through the common application.
The common application also allows students to upload high school guidance counselor recommendation forms directly and request that their guidance counselors send transcripts which accelerate the entire admissions process. The applicant pool (1,000) that used our own web application through active admission was a strong group as well. Forty-five percent of our applicants came from this source and 68% of those were accepted to the university. Of those accepted, 18% deposited to attend for fall 2012. The rest of the applicants (238) came from paper applications which yielded approximately 34%.
FINANCIAL AID

The financial aid office processed over $52 million in student aid this past academic year for over 2,500 students. Approximately 96% of our traditional day students received institutional aid. Financial aid continues to play a critical role in attracting and retaining students; particularly given the fact that unfavorable economic conditions continue to have an impact on enrollment.

Many new student aid regulatory requirements led the financial aid office to focus its efforts on compliance this past year. The requirements included the development and publishing of a net price calculator on the DeSales website and providing data to the U.S. Department of Education on our certificate programs to meet new gainful employment regulations. The office also modified its systems to accommodate changes in student eligibility for the federal Pell grant and direct loan programs and made the transition to the new informer report writing tool. This tool is being used to query the institution’s Ellucian (formerly Datatel) database for the purposes of reporting, reconciliation, and completing surveys requiring financial aid information.
In the case of the traditional day students, financial aid continues to be used strategically to meet enrollment objectives. The financial aid packaging model for institutional gift aid was updated for the 2012-2013 packaging year based on an analysis of historical yield rates, projected admits, and academic quality and net revenue goals. The model was reviewed by the vice president of student life, the vice president of administration, finance, and campus environment, the treasurer, and the dean of enrollment management in advance of freshmen packaging in an effort to build consensus concerning enrollment objectives. The model forecasted a total enrollment of 455 students with a discount rate of 47.51% and net revenue of $6,713,000. Current enrollment and discount rate data suggest that the discount rate will be higher than predicted; but, it is expected that budget goals will be met.
FINANCIAL AID STATISTICS
Approximately 1,570 undergraduate day students, 610 undergraduate evening students and 380 graduate students received financial assistance. The following charts are a summary of the number of awards and amounts awarded by program and category over the past 5 years for all DeSales recipients:
