Director of Marketing and Communications

Atlanta Track Club is a nonprofit committed to creating an active and healthy Atlanta. Through running and walking, Atlanta Track Club motivates, inspires and engages the community to enjoy a healthier lifestyle. With more than 24,000 members, Atlanta Track Club is the second largest running organization in the United States. In addition to the AJC Peachtree Road Race – the largest 10K running event in the world, the Atlanta 10 Miler and Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon, Atlanta Track Club directs more than 30 events per year.  Through the support of its members and volunteers, Atlanta Track Club also maintains a number of community initiatives including organizing and promoting the Kilometer Kids youth running program to metro Atlanta youth, honoring high school cross country and track and field athletes through Atlanta Track Club’s All-Metro Banquets and supporting the Grady Bicycle EMT program.



Reporting to the Executive Director and leading a team of marketing managers, this highly visible and collaborative position requires strategic planning experience, team leadership skills, budgeting acumen, and the ability to multi-task and prioritizes responsibilities. This role will oversee all marketing, communication and brand management for Atlanta Track Club’s events and programs. The person who accepts this role believes that running and walking has a positive impact on the quality of life. He/she enjoys interacting with runners of all abilities and has a commitment and passion for the sport that extends well beyond the traditional workday.
Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee development and execution of marketing and communication strategies to promote Atlanta Track Club’s mission, drive brand awareness as well as help drive membership and participation in Atlanta Track Club’s events and programs.

  • Lead efforts to build a culture of cross-department collaboration so that consistent, effective messaging is delivered to the organization’s community.

  • Develop, with marketing staff, detailed public relations and advertising plans. Oversee staff who executes local and national public relations efforts, content generation for story pitches, press release distribution, crisis communications planning and press conference execution for all Atlanta Track Club events and programs including the world’s largest 10K event, the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

  • Craft and oversee a forward looking social media strategy designed to inform, entertain the Atlanta Track Club community and the running community at large.

  • Develop media operations plan for the organization’s larger events including the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

  • Develop and track metrics to measure success of event and program marketing campaigns and organizational initiatives.

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight of Atlanta Track Club’s key communication channels including but not limited to websites, blog, social media sites, e-newsletters and member magazine.

  • Lead the re-launch of member magazine.

  • Integrate purposeful, regular video content into Atlanta Track Club’s communications plan.

  • Strengthen relationships with key media partners on both a local and national level.

  • Represent marketing and communications on the organization’s senior leadership team as well as play a key leadership role on the organization’s marketing committee.

  • Lead and manage the marketing functional team.

  • Draft and manage functional team budget.



Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations or other related field required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrably successful marketing experience.

  • Background in sports, health and fitness marketing or media a plus.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience successfully building and managing a team and working within a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in a dynamic nonprofit or for-profit environment and prior oversight of a rapidly growing/transforming area within that environment a plus.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to maintain key relationships with internal and external constituent groups.

  • Proficient user of social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat.

  • Photo editing and copy editing a plus.

  • Budgeting experience a must.

  • Expertise in handling multiple tasks, superior time-management and organizational skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience with an event-based organization.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to accomplish the mission.

  • Willingness to join the events team with load-in and loud-out process including lifting items up to 40 pounds.

  • Creativity and passion for Atlanta Track Club’s mission.

  • Demonstrated commitment to running and physical fitness.
