Digital Technologies Employed for Mechanical Work in the Industry


The interviewees provided various examples of digital technologies used in the industry for mechanical work: Interviewee 1 highlighted vehicle diagnosis software, automotive multimeters, and various machines used in automotive manufacturing workshops, such as conveyor belts, robots, CNC machines, jig welders, and engine machining stations. They emphasized the need for technical universities to evolve their training to include AI, machine learning, robotic training, and vehicle engine simulations to better equip engineering graduates with industry-required skills. He highlights vehicle diagnosis software, automotive multimeters, and various machines used in automotive manufacturing workshops, such as conveyor belts, robots, CNC machines, jig welders, and engine machining stations. They emphasize the need for technical universities to evolve their training to include AI, machine learning, robotic training, and vehicle engine simulations to better equip engineering graduates with industry-required skills. This finding is consistent with previous research showing that digital technologies are becoming increasingly essential in the mechanical engineering industry (e.g., Günsel & Yamen, 2020; P. Zheng et al., 2018).
Moreover, it was revealed that industrial robotics, automated spot-welding robots, digital plastics injection molds, and computer numerical control (CNC) as key digital technologies in the industry. Interviewee 3 shared that Silver Star Auto Limited uses star diagnostic machines, digital brake bleeding machines, digital micrometers, and vernier calipers. Interviewee 4 also listed industrial robotics, automated spot-welding robots, digital plastics injection molds, and computer numerical control (CNC) as digital technologies used in the industry. Interviewees 2 (IE2) and 4 (IE4) agree that industrial automation, automated spot-welding robots, digital plastics injection moulds, and computer numerical control (CNC) are essential digital technologies in the industry. These examples further illustrate the significance of digital technologies in the mechanical engineering industry, corroborating previous research emphasising the importance of automation and
digitization in contemporary engineering practise (e.g.,Klotins & Peretz- Andersson, 2022; Legner et al., 2017). In conclusion, the interviewees identified numerous digital technologies used in the mechanical industry, such as vehicle diagnosis software, automotive multimeters, industrial robotics, automated spot- welding robots, digital plastics injection moulds, computer numerical control (CNC), and various machines in automotive manufacturing workshops. They also emphasised the significance of aligning technical university training with the evolving requirements of the industry. These results are consistent with prior research (e.g., Ikubanni et al., 2022; Zalilov et al., 2019) discussing the importance of digital technologies in the mechanical engineering industry.
