Annotating your novel
You will need your own copy of the book so you can annotate as you read. (Annotate:
v. to supply with
critical or explanatory notes; comment upon in notes) Annotating the text means to mark it up to find meaning in the text. You will color code the annotations based upon the code below.
Burning Blue by Paul Griffin:
1.) Create a color chart key inside the front cover of your book. Leave space below the chart to write.
Blue= family
Orange= social identity
Red= inner vs. outer beauty
Green= wealth or poverty
Purple= trust (or lack of trust)
Yellow= overcoming adversity
Black= friendship

As you read,
Highlight or underline statements dealing with family. (BLUE)
Highlight or underline statements dealing with culture and identity. (ORANGE)
Highlight or underline statements dealing with justice. (RED)
Highlight or underline statements dealing with wealth or poverty. (GREEN)
Highlight or underline statements dealing with maturity and responsibility. (PURPLE)
Highlight or underline statements dealing with dreams, hopes, and plans. (YELLOW)

3.) At the end of each chapter, summarize the plot of that particular chapter in 1-2 sentences. Write the summary in any available space in the book at the end of the chapter.
4.) Write down and define 10 new words you come across in the book. Write this down in
the front of the book.
