One night her brothers John S. and William Y. were called to the Applegate house by the message that Rachel was ‘bad sick.’ When they arrived they found her in bed with a baby. Later on she married William Applegate’s half brother, George W. Nobles.
Her brothers always felt that the father of the child was their brother-in-law, Applegate. My grandfather, John S. Downing refused to visit the Applegate home any more. He always referred contemptuously to Mary’s husband as ‘old Bill Applegate.’
The child Billy died when about 2 years of age.
George Nobles died from the ‘damps’ while cleaning a well. Rachel supported her children by weaving rag rugs and carpets.”

Asa was a drunkard. Jim Hawk was part Indian.
Jim Hawk then brought another woman to live in a little shack on our farm. When he refused to pay rent or work to pay his rent my dad went down to give him a written notice to vacate. When his (Hawk’s) dog tried to attack dad, he hit the dog then Hawk came to the door with a 22 caliber rifle and threatened to shoot my dad. I took our shotgun and told Hawk to start shooting but he thought better of it—that should have closed the matter but Howard (my brother) took the gun and stepped one foot across the fence. This gave Hawk an excuse to have Howard arrested for trespass. At the P. court trial the charge was dismissed and Hawk was ordered to move. He med Howard in the road later when both were driving horses hitched to open buggies and Hawk gave Howard a cut across the face with a buggy whip. This could have ended with Hawk being charged with assault but it seems best to ignore trash and avoid further involvement.”
