Taking a look around the horn of Section 14:

Sunday May 25, 2014 was a very special day for AYSO Section 14. On that day it was formally announced that AYSO was awarding the 2016 National Games to our section. The games will be played in July 2016 at the International Polo Grounds in Wellington Florida with the opening ceremonies taking place at the Florida Atlantic University Football Stadium. We will once again be supported by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. We will be looking to have an introductory organizational meeting in late July or early August with the announced day and location to be announced shortly. We will need a lot of volunteers for the weeklong event and there are a lot of positions that will need to be filled. If you are interested in helping, please contact the Tournament Chairperson, Wendy Smith at Jaswen@bellsouth.net.
AYSO has a new National President!!! On Sunday May 25, 2014 Mark Stewart was elected the new National President of AYSO. Mark is a former liaison for our section and is a long time AYSO volunteer and member of the National Board of Directors. Getting his start in AYSO from the great State of Hawaii, Mark has held many positions within AYSO as a Section Director, Area Director, Regional Commissioner and Regional Safety Director. He has also been a Vice President on the National Board of Directors since 2006. Mark owns a Real Estate and Property Management firm in Hawaii. Congratulations Mark from your adopted Section 14.
The National Annual General Meeting (NAGM) was held at the Anaheim Marriott Friday May 23- Sunday May 25. Our section was represented by Richard Schwartz, Wendy Smith, Rose Arsenault, Matilde Casas, Michael Hartley, Alan Dagen, Lisa Seltzer, Mark Turbessi and Joe Shipe. Along with the election of the new President, the following individuals were elected to the National Board: Fred Freeman, Jeff McClure, Donna Nelson and Mark Stewart. There were two proposed amendments on the ballot. The proposed amendment which would have allowed regional commissioners to vote for section directors was not passed. The proposed amendment clarifying Outside Director Appointments by the National Board of Directors was passed. Saturday night saw a special 50th Anniversary Gala with emcee Bob Eubanks of the Newlywed Game Fame and keynote speaker former USMNT member and AYSO Alum Cobi Jones. Former US Womens National Team Player and former AYSO player Julie Foudy spoke to the Executive Members earlier in the day. The 2016 National Games were awarded to our section and next year’s NAGM location was announced. The location will be Phoenix Arizona. The AYSO Section, Area and Region of the year were announced, but in our usual humble way, we deferred to others….lol. Hopefully next year. Section 1 received the Section of the Year, Area 2N was Area of the Year.
On Saturday May 3, 2014 136 communities across the United States with 14, 628 AYSO players joined together to form the World’s Largest Pick Up Game and, in turn, set a world record. The pick up style national event spotlighted soccer and fun AYSO style in celebration of our 50th Anniversary. Our own Region 345 in West Palm Beach highlighted the Section 14 contingent towards this world record.
The AYSO Residential Soccer Camp is coming to the Inspiration Academy in Bradenton Florida June 22- June 26, 2014. The AYSO Residential Soccer Camp is distinctly different from other soccer camps in that the focus is on the complete development of the player both on and off the field. Soccer players will learn key elements needed to be a successful team player as well as develop the level of personal responsibility needed to succeed in junior high, high school, college and beyond. The camp is designed for soccer players ages 12-15. The cost of the camp is $599 and includes room and board, four t-shirts and a soccer ball. The curriculum will include: Technical, Tactical, Physical and Mental aspects of the game of soccer as well as Leadership and Life Skills, Leadership and Academics and Health and Life Choices. For more information contact Zach Stiffel at 800-872-2976 or email ZachS@ayso.org. He made his first international start in 2010 in a friendly against Brazil and has played professionally in Sweden, Germany and France. Congratulations Ale. A great young man who followed and reached his dreams.
