AIAA-2015-3867 Effect of Water and Humidity on Hypergolic Propellant Ignition Delay
C. Ignition Delay Tests
Both TEAB and MMH were tested with WFNA. The water concentration in the WFNA was either 0% or 10% by weight. The relative humidity level was controlled to be either below 24% or above 94%. Additionally, liquid samples from the aging study were tested in less than 24% RH with neat WFNA. All of the TEAB samples were kept in their original bottles and fuel was drawn directly from the bottle in an ambient air environment. Conductors opened neat MMH in a nitrogen-purged box and transferred 2 ml of MMH in a
7 ml vial with a PTFE/silicone septum and a polypropylene open-top screw cap. For the first 50 tests, test conductors opened WFNA in ambient air inside of a fume hood and loaded it into two 7 ml vials. For the last 7 tests, conductors used a previously-unopened bottle of WFNA and opened it in a nitrogen environment before loading it into two vials. A 1 ml glass pipette was used to transfer 2 ml of WFNA to each vial. Al syringe (accurate to
± 2 l) added 336 l of deionized water to one of the WFNA vials. This produced the 10% concentration by weight of water in WFNA. Downloaded by PURDUE UNIVERSITY on July 21, 2017 | http://arc.aiaa.org | DOI: 10.2514/6.2015-3867

8 During testing, conductors first loaded the fuel into a 100 l syringe and set it in the syringe holder inside of the test article. It remained there until it needed to be refilled or switched. Once testing was ready to commence, the conductors loaded 4 drops (180 ll) of oxidizer into the crucible using a 3 ml plastic pipette. Dry air or humid air purged the test article until the desired conditions were reached or until 10 s before acquiring data on the VI. Once 180 s elapsed from when the oxidizer was inserted, data acquisition began and the test conductors manually actuated the syringe within 20 s. After test completion, conductors sprayed down any remaining propellant with deionized water and cleaned the crucible with Kimwipes.
