Charles Cavender;

Mary Elizabeth Cavender (“Mary Cavender” & “M.E. Cavender”); and,

Jane Cavender;

Veta Cavender born about 1908, married Herschel Voorhies (“Hershel Voories”?), and died on March 9, 1983. Herchel Voorhies was born about 1909, and died on May 3, 1981; and,

Marvin Cavender born about 1911, married Katie Lou Cherry (“Katie Cherry” & “Katherine Cherry”?), and died on October 15, 1982. Marvin Cavender and Katie Cavender (“Katherine Cavender”?) had a daughter named:

Patsy Ann Cavender (“Patsy Cavender”, “Patricia Ann Cavender”?, “Patricia Cavender”? & “P.A. Cavender”); and,

LUCIUS STOKES CAVENDER (“Lucius Cavender” & “L.S. Cavender”) born in December 1888 in Elis County, Texas, never married, and is buried in Ellis County, Texas; 432

STEPHEN CANTRELL CAVENDER (“Stephen C. Cavender”, "S.C. Cavender", “Stephen Cantrall Cavender”? & “Stephen Cantral Cavender”?) born in Williamson County, Tennessee on March 4, 1836, first married Helena Kirk (“Helenah Kirk”) on November 13, 1857 in Maury County, Tennessee and had 8 children, later married Leona Estes (Lucy Neomy Estes”? & “Lucy Estes”?) after 1874 and had 9 additional children, moved his famly to Dallas County, Texas in 1886, and died in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, Texas. Helena Kirk was born on October 9, 1836 in Hickman County, Tennessee, was the oldest child of Hugh Cain Kirk (“Hugh A. Kirk”? & "Hugh Kirk") and Nancy P. Plummer (“Nancy Plummer”) of Tennessee. Hugh Kirk was born on August 25, 1811 in North Carolina, and died on November 7, 1873 near Hampshire, Maury County, Tennessee. Nancy Plummer was born about 1813 in North Carolina, married on September 9, 1834 in Lewis, Tennessee and died on March 15, 1857. Lucy Estes was born about 1856, and died on June 28, 1890.

According to the 1860 census, the Stephen Cavender was then living in Maury County, Tennessee, and he was the listed as being S.C. Cavinder age 24 and thus born about 1836 (actually March 4, 1836), his wife was then listed as H. Cavinder (“H. Cavender”, “Helen Cavender”, “Hellena Cavender” & “Helend Cavender”) age 23 and thus born about 1837 (actually October 9, 1936), and their children then living in their household comprised only a daughter named N.F. Cavinder (“N.F. Cavender”) age 1 and thus born about 1859. Also living in the same household were W.A. Ashmore a male age 21 and thus born about 1839. Stephen Cavender was one of the first to enlist in the Confederate services in the First Regiment of Calvary (“Mounted Gunmen Dyer’s Tennessee Volunteers. under the command of Colonel Bitfull.132 Apparently a William Cavender also served in the same unit.

On March 29, 1875, a so-called “Deed of Trust” was recorded in Lewis County, Tennessee by A.J. Noles signed by S.C. Cavender in consideration of the sum of one dollar and for 4 yearling mules and one yoke of oxen (one black and one white) together with a note to Almand Barns as security for Jacob Cox on a note of $135 credited with about $32 and due on December 25, 1874. If S.C. Cavender should pay the said note before December 1, 1875, then the deed of trust is valid. But, if not, then A.J. Noles can give a 10 day public notice and sell the said animals to the highest bidder to pay off the debt by S.C. Cavender to A.J. Noles.

On March 29, 1875, S.C. Cavender and his wife Helena Cavender (“Hellena Cavender”) sold to James Sirass? a parcel of land comprising 612 acres located in Lewis County, Tennessee for the sum of $1,500. On the same day, they sold to John Sims 204 acres on the waters of the Big Swan Creek for the sum of $754.50.

In 1886, S. C. Cavender moved to Cedar Hill, Dallas County, Texas and he and his wife eventually had 8 children.

Of possible significance is that a Hugh Cain Kirk (“Hugh Kirk”) born on August 25, 1811 in York County, South Carolina, first married Nancy P. Plummer (“Nancy Plummer”) on September 9, 1834, next married in November 1857 the widow of William Bryum (“William Byrum”) who was named Mary A. Bryum (“Mary Byrum”), and he died about 1873. Nancy Plummer was born about 1813 in North Carolina, and died about 1857. Mary Noles, who married William Bryum (“William Byrum), was born about 1824 in Tennessee, and died on February 2, 1868 in Maury County, Tennessee. Hugh Kirk and Nancy Kirk had the following10 children:

(1) Helenah Kirk (“Helena Kirk”) born on October 9, 1836 in Hickman County, Tennessee, and who married the above Stephen C. Cavender (“Stephen Cantrell Cavender”, “S.C. Cavender” & “Stephen Cavender)on November 13, 1857 in Maury County, Tennessee and who was born on March 4, 1836;

(2) Alemeda Kirk born on April 6, 1838, and died on April 23, 1904;

(3) George Omri Kirk (“George Kirk”) born on March 1, 1841, and died on September 11, 1912;

(4) Elamanga Kirk born on October 11, 1841, and died on December 11, 1909;

(5) Robert Bruce Kirk (“Robert Kirk”) born on April 9, 1844, moved from Maury County, Tennessee to Ellis County, Texas, and died on June 15, 1922; (6) Mary Alice Kirk (“Mary Kirk”) born on March 28, 1846, first married John Frank Jordan (“John Jordan”), next married Samuel Watson Akins (“Samuel Akins”, “Samuel Atkins”? & “Watson Atkins”?) and died on January 5, 1925 in California;

(7) Whig Kirk born on June 29, 1848 and died on January 31, 1921;

(8) Martha H. Kirk (“Martha Kirk”) born on June 19, 1851, and died on November 2, 1862;

(9) Octavia L. Kirk (“Octavia Kirk”) born on June 4, 1854, and married James C. Jordan (“James Jordan”). James Jordan and Octavia Jordan had a son named Dick Jordan (“Richard Jordan”); and,

(10) Nancy Lavonia Kirk (“Nancy Kirk”) born on December 1, 1856, and married John L. Grimes (“John Grimes”). This is the same John Grimes with whose family Buck Cavender and Mollie Cavender (“Molly Cavender”) were then living when the 1880 census was taken.

As above stated, the first Nancy Kirk died about 1857 and Hugh Kirk next married Mary A. Noles (“Mary Noles”, formerly “Mary Bryum” or “Mary Byrum”). Mary Noles was apparently the widow of “William A. Byrum” or “William Bryum”) in November 1857 She was born as Mary Noles about 1824 in Tennessee, and died on February 2, 1868 in Maury County, Tennessee. While Mary Noles was married to William Byrum (“William Bryum”), they apparently had 4 children:

James H. Byrum (“James Byrum” & “James Bryum”);

Matilda E. Bryum (“Matilda Byrum” & “Matilda Bryum”);

William B. Bryum (“William Bryum” & “William Byrum”); and,

Thomas J. Byrum (“Thomas Byrum” & “Thomas Bryum”) born on February 7, 1850, married Pricilla Pogue, and died on November 19, 1933. Pricilla Pogue was born on June 3, 1853, and died on October 5, 1925.

Apparently, Thomas Bryum and Pricilla Bryum (“Pricilla Byrum”) had the following 11 children:

Bill Byrum (“Bill Bryum”, “William Byrum” & “William Bryum”) who married and had no children;

Addie Byrum (“Addie Bryum”) who married a Mayfield;

George Bryum (“George Byrum”) born on September 21, 1876, never married, and died on February 10, 1967;

Minnie Bryum (“Minnie Byrum”) who married Sam Baxter (“Samuel Baxter”). Sam Baxter and Minnie Baxter had 2 children: Otto Baxter who married a Virece; and, Juanita Baxter who married a Gallagher;

Jim Bryum (“Jim Byrum”, “James Bryum” & “James Byrum”) who married a Moore;

Maude Myrtle Bryum (“Maude Byrum”, “Maude Bryum” & “Myrtle Byrum”) born on May 6, 1883, married James Andrew Gray (“James Gray”), and died on August 16, 1956;

Birdie Byrum (“Birdie Bryum”);

S. Marvin Bryum (“S. Marvin Byrum”, “Marvin Bryum”, “Pete Bryum” & “Pete Byrum”) born on July 4, 1888, never married, and died on July 5, 1973;

Jack Byrum (“Jack Bryum”, “John Byrum” & “John Bryum”) born on October 8, 1891, never married, and died on June 27, 1960;

Ruby Byrum (“Ruby Bryum”); and,

Herman Byrum (“Herman Bryum”) born on July 27, 1895, and died on October 3, 1908.

By his second marriage, Hugh Kirk and Mary Kirk (formerly widow “Mary Byrum” or “Mary Bryum”, and born “Mary Noles”) had the following 4 children:

John Dee Kirk (“John Kirk”) born on October 16, 1858, moved from Maury County, Tennessee to Ellis County, Texas, and died on January 8, 1940;

Samuel Morgan Kirk (“Samuel Kirk”) born on July 2, 1860, never married, and moved from Maury County, Tennessee to Ellis County, Texas;

Joseph Johnson Kirk (“Joseph Kirk”) born on May 16, 1863, moved from Maury County, Tennessee to Ellis County, Texas, and died on February 13, 1943; and,

Amanda Jane Kirk (“Amands Kirk” & “Jennie Kirk”) born on February 6, 1867, married Phillip W. Childress (“Phillip Childress”), and died about 1949.

Either the same, or another, Stephen Cavender married Matilda Majors (“Malinda Majors”?) about 1845 shortly after the death of her husband, Samuel Majors, who had died sometime between 1840 and 1845 in Maury County, Tennessee, which was a part of Williamson County, Tennessee prior to 1807 and is now located in Lewis County, Tennessee. Matilda had married Samuel Majors on February 11, 1839 in Maury County, Tennessee and who apparently became a rather large land owner, having be granted a rather large land grant in 1820. It is to be noted that Lewis County, Tennessee was formed from parts of the counties of Maury County, Tennessee, Hickman County, Tennessee, Wayne County, Tennessee, and Lawrence County, Tennessee in 1843. The particular section given to Lewis County, Tennessee by Maury County, Tennessee was returned to Maury County, Tennessee in 1852.

According to a court decision in Maury County, Tennessee about 1845 entitled “Benjamin vs Majors” it was stated that: (i) John Bingham and Elizabeth J. Bingham (“Elizabeth Bingham”, formerly “Elizabeth J. Majors” or “Elizabeth Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee. (It is to be noted that Lewis County, Tennessee was formed from parts of the counties of Maury County, Tennessee, Hickman County, Tennessee, Wayne County, Tennessee, and Lawrence County, Tennessee in 1843. The particular section given to Lewis County, Tennessee by Maury County, Tennessee was returned to Maury County, Tennessee in 1852.); (ii) Josiah Campbell and his wife Mary Campbell (formerly “Mary Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee, and Thomas C. Coleman (“Thomas Coleman”) and his wife Charlotte (formerly “Charlotte Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee; and, (iii) William C. Coleman (“William Coleman”) all stated that Samuel Majors departed this life intestate (i.e., without leaving a will) in Maury County, Tennessee (now Lewis County, Tennessee) about 1840-1845, that he left a widow named Malinda Majors and that she had later married Stephen Cavender of Lewis County, Tennessee. (It is to be noted that Lewis County, Tennessee was formed from parts of the counties of Maury County, Tennessee, Hickman County, Tennessee, Wayne County, Tennessee, and Lawrence County, Tennessee in 1843. The particular section given to Lewis County, Tennessee by Maury County, Tennessee was returned to Maury County, Tennessee in 1852.) The 5 children of Samuel Majors were:

Elizabeth J. Majors (“Elizabeth Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee;

Sarah A. Majors (“Sarah Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee;

James A. Majors (“James Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee;

Mary Majors of Lewis County, Tennessee; and,

Samuel H. Majors (“Samuel Majors”) of Lewis County, Tennessee. The deceased Samuel Majors owned considerable real estate at his death. He owned at least 683 acres now in Lewis County, Tennessee where he resided, and had a number of slaves worth $12,912.)

S.C. Cavender was among the first to enlist in the Confederate service, joining the 2th Tennessee Calvary Battalion under Colonel Biffle for 1 year, after which time he returned home. The battalion was organized at Camp Lee, Maury County, Tennessee, with five companies “A” to “E” and was also called the 3rd. Battalion, Jones’ Battalion and Cox’s Battalion.
