When John Calvin Cavender married Nancy P. Stark (“Nancy Stark”), he apparently was 25 years of age and she was 15 years of age and born about 1840. Parthenia Cavender was born in Graves County, Kentucky on June 20, 1840, died in Graves County, Kentucky on March 11, 1876, and is buried with her husband. According to the 1860 census for Graves County, Kentucky, a J.C. Cavender (“John Calvin Cavender”?) was then living in Graves County who was listed as being born about 1834, and who married an "N.P." (Nancy P. Stark”?), and at that time had two children: "S.L. Cavender" (“S.J. Cavender”) born about 1857; and, "A.H. (See their family already listed under Silas Francis Cavender);
Isaac Joseph Cavender ("Ike Cavender", "Issac Cavender", “I.J. Cavender”, “Isaac J. Cavender”, “Isac Cavender” & "Isaac Cavender") born March 21, 1862 in Graves County, Kentucky, first married Ann Elizabeth Roach ("Ann Roach", "Annie Roach" & "Betty Roach"), latter married Emma Dove or (Emma Cunningham), died on November 17, 1941 in Graves County, Kentucky in a buggy accident, and is buried in the Old Bethel Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Graves County, Kentucky. Annie Roach Cavender was born on July 25, 1863, died on January 1, 1909, and is buried with her husband.
The above Isaac Joseph Cavender is probably the same recorded “I.J. Cavender” who, during a regular monthly business meeting on October 28, 1894 at the Old Bethel Primitive Baptist Church near Felisciania, Graves County, Kentucky, objected to the church entering into communion service on the grounds that “the church was not in condition to commune”. Apparently, a few members of the Old Bethel Church believed in one form of “Predestination”(i.e., Absolute Predestination) led by its former minister, Rev. R.H. Boaz, and the remaining members of the congregation believed in another form of Predestination known as “Limited” Predestination, led by its existing minister, Rev. R.S. Kirkland. The action by I.J. Cavender (“Isaac Joseph Cavender”?) and a minority of members eventually resulted in a lawsuit which went all the way to the Kentucky Court of Appeals (“Bennett, et al. v. Morgan, et al., 66 Southwestern Reporter, 287-290), with the final decision being rendered in favor of the majority and against I.J. Cavender and the minority. As a result, in November 1894, the minority members, including J.C. Cavender (who was either John Collins Cavender, the son of I.J. Cavender, or he was John Calvin Cavender who was the brother of I.J. Cavender) and I.J. Cavender were excommunicated from Bethel Church. Subsequently, A.E. Cavender, B.A. Cavender, and others, were excommunicated in June 1895 for associating with an excommunicated member. Harriett Cavender and N.C. Cavender were also excommunicated and thereafter proceeded to build another church next door to the present church. By February 1973, the membership in the new church had dwindled to one member, Mrs. Sarah R. Pirtle (“Sarah Pirtle”) who deeded the 1 1/6 acres owned by the adjacent new church to the original Bethel Church.
As background, beginning probably in the late 1880's or early 1890's, some differences of opinion began to surface in the Bethel Primitive Baptist Association over the biblical teaching of Predestination. It was agreed by all that the Almighty God, from all eternity, had foreknown and predestined “all things which come to pass” (Romans, 8:28-30). The “Absolute” Predestinarians interpreted the word “things” to mean just what it appears to say, i.e., whether with reference to the material universe or with reference to the salvation of souls. The “Limited” Predestinarians interpretee the word “things” to be limited to the salvation of souls only and thus reputiated the idea that God predestined the absolute happening of all things, even those things though to be sinful. At the October 1891 meeting of the Bethel Association, a group of 6 churches were granted so-called “Letters of Dismission” as they wished to organize a new association known as the Philesic Association of Regular Primitive Baptists which believed in Limited Predestination, and was so organized at the Little Zion Meeting House in Weakley County, Tennessee. Old Bethel later formally withdrew from membership in the Bethel Association and on October 18-20 formally became a member of the Philestic Association, and thereafter required all its members to adopt the interpretation of Limited Predestination, thereby prompting I.J. Cavender to objected Old Bethel entering into communion services on October 28, 1894 on the grounds that the church (Old Bethel) was not in condition to commune. The minority members still had the keys to the doors of the church and promptly locked the majority members out, who promptly used an ax to gain entrance, and thereby prompting the above lawsuit. In September 1895, a prominate Primitive Baptist preacher, Elder Sylvester Hassel (“Sylvester Hassol”?) attempted a reconciliation between the two Rev. Boaz and Rev. Kirkland factions, to no avail.
