James Joseph was born about 1825; 391 & 477 and, REBECCA CAVENDER who is believed to have first married a Robertson and thus became Rebecca Robertson, and later married either a Wicker or Weeker and thus became either Rebecca Wicker or Rebecca Weeker. Rebecca Wicker still later married James Absalom ("James Absolam") on either May 13, 1806 or on October 11, 1806, in Princess Ann, County, Virginia(which now in the independent City/County of Virginia Beach, Virginia) and thus became Rebecca Absalom; NANCY CAVENDER who at that particular point in time was Nancy Diggs (“Nancy Deggs”?); MARGARET CAVENDER who at that particular point in time was Margaret Dunn; WILLIAM E. CAVENDER ("William Cavender" & “W.E. Cavender”) born about 1763 – 1765 in Princess Anne County, Virginia, and married Amy Leggett ("Amey Leggett") on March 31, 1783 in Princess Anne County, Virginia (which now in the independent City/County of Virginia Beach, Virginia) with the surety being Enoch Jones ("Ezock Jones"?). James Cavender gave his consent and Henry Cavender and Mary Cavender witnessed the consent of James Cavender. As parental consent was needed for William Cavender to be married, he was probably born about 1763-1765. Amy Leggett was the daughter of James Leggett and Frances Leggett of Princess Anne County, Virginia. In 1785, the William Cavender family consisted of 4 persons who were then living in Princess Anne County, Virginia. There was only one William Cavender living in Princess Anne County, Virginia on May 23, 1826. Amy Leggett Cavender later married a John Absalom on July 31, 1832 in Princess Anne County, Virginia with George Morriss ("George Norris"? & "George Morris") performing the ceremony, and may even have married a Burk (“Amy Burk” & “Amey Burk”). On February 13, 1821, William E. Cavender (“William Cavender”) stated in Princess Anne County, Virginia that William Bonney and Ann Lamont were of lawful age to marry, and on which date they apparently married; and, HENRY CAVENDER who may have been the Henry Cavender who married a Mrs. Sarah Wilburn (“Sarah Wilbern”?) on August 11, 1808 in Princess Anne County, Virginia (which is now the independent City/County of Virginia Beach, Virginia), with the ceremony being conducted by Rev. Charles Henley. Also, a Henry Cavender married a Frances Whitehurst (“Frances Whiteherst”?) in Lynnhaven Parish of Princess Anne County, Virginia on February 15, 1821 with the ceremony being conducted by Rev. George Morris (“George Norris”?), a Baptist minister and with the surety being William Cason (“William Carson”?); and, WILLIAM CAVENDER? 133, 149, 222, 279, 294, 350 & 355 (IV) THOMAS CAVENDER, SR. born about 1732, who some believe married Elizabeth Woodhouse in Princess Ann County, Virginia, the widow of Phillip Woodhouse ("Phil Woodhouse") and the admistratrix of the estate of William Woodhouse who died in 1789 and who was the son of Phillip Woodhouse, and was first reported in the 1783 census of Princess Anne County, Virginia (which now in the independent City/County of Virginia Beach, Virginia) as then having a family of 5 persons and no slaves. He executed his Last Will an Testament on March 21, 1789 in Princess Ann County, Virginia, his brother Henry Cavender was named the Executor, his Will was witnessed by William Gornto, Moses Flanaklin ("Moses Frannklin"?, "Moses Frannakin" & "Moses Flanagan"?) and Mary Robertson. His Will was probated in Princess Anne County, Virginia on September 10, 1789. Bequests were made to his 2 sons, Thomas Cavender and James Cavender, and to his daughter, Bets ( originally “Betsy Cavender” & “Elizabeth Cavender” but who may have been married at that time. The basis of the conclusion that the above Thomas Cavender was the one who married Mrs. Elizabeth Woodhouse is as follows: A court proceedings in Princess Anne County, Virginia on August 27, 1789 involved Henry Cavinder ("Henry Cavender"?) who was the administrator of the estate of an un-named Cavender who had married Elizabeth Woodhouse who was the widow of a Phillip Woodhouse and was the Administratrix of the estate of William Woodhouse.112 On January 10, 1782, Thomas Cavendar ("Thomas Cavender") of Princess Anne County, Virginia, purchased from John Woodhouse and Rachel Woodhouse a 43 acre tract of land and building at Brinsons Inlet in Princess Anne County and adjacent to land owned by Adam Robinson and Anthony Lovett. The Indenture was witnessed by John Fentress, Reuben Lovett and Isaac Tolewine. 112 & 198 Also, note that on September 10, 1789, the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Cavender of Princess Anne County, Virginia, was probated and in which he named his sons Thomas Cavender and James Cavender and his daughter, Elizabeth Cavender ("Betsey Cavender" & "Betsy Cavender"). He appointed his brother Henry Cavender of Princess Anne County the executor and who died in 1803 in Princess Anne County. Thomas Cavender's will was witnessed by William Gornto, Moses Flanakin ("Moses Flannigan"?) and Mary Robertson (“Mary Robinson”?). 28, 43, 91 & 196 Thus, it appears that this particular Thomas Cavender is believed by some to be the un-named Cavender who is stated to have married Elizabeth Woodhouse and that this particular Thomas Cavender was the brother of the Henry Cavender above. In his Last Will and Testament, Thomas Cavender named his then living children as being: JAMES CAVANDER ("James Cavender") born about 1757 and who apparently married widow Mrs. Frankey Kellam (“Frankey Kellem”?) on May 5, 1804 in the Lower Norfolk County ("section"?) of Princess Anne County, Virginia with Rev. William Morris ("William Manias"?) and Rev. James Dawley performing the ceremony. Following the death of James Cavender, his widow, Mrs. Frankey Cavender, married Caleb Scott on May 5, 1804? in Princess Anne County, Virginia. The above James Cavender may have been the same person who witnessed the execution of the Last Will and Testament of his uncle, Henry Cavender, in Princess Anne County, Virginia on May 26, 1801. However, he may not be the same James Cavender who allegedly gave his consent on March 31, 1783 in Princess Anne County, Virginia to the marriage of Henry Cavender’s son William E. Cavender to Amy Leggett (“Amey Leggett”) who was the daughter of James Leggett and Frances Leggett. Henry Cavender and Mary Cavender allegedly witnessed the consent by James Cavender and Enoch Jones was the surety. On December 20, 1779, a James Cavender,then age 22 and thus born about 1757, and who was 5 feet 8 1/4 inches in height, and had dark hair and hazel eyes, enlisted in the Revolutionary War in Muky Town (or Mukytown) in Amelia County, Virginia. Also enlisted, or re-enlisted in Amelia County, Virginia on December 20, 1779 were: John Cavender, age 17 and thus born about 1762, who was 5 feet 8 inches in height, had dark hair, and blue eyes; and, Joseph Cavender, age 19 and thus born about 1760, and who was 5 feet 7 ½ inches in height, had hair dark, and blue eyes . Actually, he re-enlisted, and was the son of Hugh Cavender. On May 2, 1783, the above James Cavender, having served his enlistment time of 3 years, was discharged from service in the State Line on this date, and was entitled to the proportion of land entitled to a military Private. His discharge was signed by Thomas Meriwether and Benjamin Harrison. he was further granted Land Warrant No. 538 for 200 acres of land, which warrant apparently was exercised in the State of Kentucky . 124, 136 & 382 It is believed, that the above James Cavender had a son named:
According to the 1850 census reports for Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa, Elizabeth Cavender is then listed as being age 43 and born in Ohio? about 1807, and the widow of John Cavender who was then deceased, and their children then living at home were: Sara Cavender (“Sarah Cavender”?) age 22 and born in Illinois about 1828; Joseph age 21 and born in Iowa about 1829, and James Cavender age 15 and born in Illinois about 1835. It is acknowledged that the particular document containing the name of J.I. Cavender was were difficult to read because the script capital "C" could be confused with the script capital "I". The referenced document is found on a deed dated October 18, 1841 transferring real estate by Abraham Jones, guardian of the infant heirs of either J.I. Cavender (“Joseph Isaac”?, “J.C. Cavender”, “John Calvin Cavender”? & “John Charles Cavender”?), then deceased, to John C. Wadsworth ("John Wadsworth") in Pike County, Illinois. Upon the death of her husband, Elizabeth Jones Cavender married Jeremiah Latham in Pike County, Illinois on October 13, 1837, and died in Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa. The children of John Cavender and Elizabeth Cavender were adopted by their grandfather, Abraham Jones and were: Joseph Cavender who (according to his military records) was born in Indiana about 1828-1829, was living in Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa in 1850 with his widowed mother and the rest of her children, enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 in Corydon, Iowa, and was drowned in Missouri in 1863 while his military unit was crossing a river; Sarah Cavender born about 1828-1829 in Morgan County, Illinois, was age 22 and living in Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa in 1850 with her widowed mother according to the census reports, and married John Harvey Frady ("John Trady"?) in 1852 in Bloomfield, Iowa. John Frady and Lucy Frady had 2 children: John William Frady ("John Frady") who married Lucy May Riddle ("Lucy Riddle") in Kansas; and, Sarah Myrtle Frady ("Sarah Frady") who was born in 1892; and James Cavender born in Pike County, Illinois about 1835-1836, and was living in Bloomfield Township, Davis County, Iowa in 1850 with his widowed mother according to the census reports. Shortly thereafter, he ran away from home as he did not get along with his step-father and lived with his uncle, "Captain Jones", who ran a steamship on the Mississippi River. Later, James Cavender returned and lived with his mother until she died. He later married his mother's maid, "Sarah", about 1855-1856, and in 1860 his family was living in Corydon, Iowa. In July 1862, James Cavender enlisted in the Union Army in Corydon, Iowa, in same company as his brother, Joseph Cavender. (A second account states that James Cavender enlisted January 1, 1862 in Springfield, Missouri.) 364 Shortly after the death his brother Joseph Cavender in 1863, James Cavender deserted the military and changed his name to James Carpenter. When James Cavender ("James Carpenter") returned home, he found that his wife had died and his children had been taken to some unknown place, whereupon he returned to Missouri and married Frances Bruner in October 1865 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri and who shortly died about 1870-1872. In November 1872, James Cavender (alias "James Carpenter") married for the third time to Arrena Anna Pamela West ("Ann West") November 12, 1872 in Licking, Texas County, Missouri. Ann West was born May 12, 1844 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died March 2, 1922 in Hotchkiss, Colorado. She was the daughter of William West born in Tennessee and Mary West (formerly "Mary Anderson") born in Kentucky. James Cavender and Sarah Cavender had 3 children:
The children of James Cavender(alias "James Carpenter") by his third marriage to Frances Bruner were all born in Licking, Texas County, Missouri, and were: Mary Louella Carpenter ("Mary Louella Cavender", “Mary L. Cavender” Mary Cavender", “M.L. Cavender”, "Mary Carpenter" & "Lulu Carpenter") born October 19, 1873 in Licking in Texas County, Missouri, married W.G. Balch in 1902 in Hotchkiss, Colorado, and died in 1950 in Hotchkiss, Colorado; Dora Florence Carpenter ("Dora Florence Cavender", "Dora Cavender", "Dora Carpenter", “D.F. Cavender” & "Flora Cavender") born July 16, 1875 in Licking, Missouri, married William Henry Stevens ("William Stevens") June 19, 1914 in Licking, Missouri, and died in 1972 in Hawthorne, California. William Stevens was born October 13, 1866 in Texas County, Missouri, and died November 24, 1934 in Los Angeles, California. William Stevens and Dora Stevens had a son named Thomas Vicent Stevens ("Thomas Stevens") born October 11, 1897 in Licking, Missouri, and married January 29, 1919 in Licking, Missouri; Charles Wesley Carpenter ("Charles Wesley Cavender", “Charles W. Cavender”, "Charles Cavender", “C.W. Cavender” & "Charles Carpenter") born October 1, 1880 in Licking, Texas, married Ida Linden in 1912 in Hotchkiss, Colorado, and died in 1959 in Hotchkiss, Colorado; and, Arthur J. Carpenter ("James Arthur Cavender", "James Arthur Carpenter", "James Carpenter", "Arthur Carpenter", "James Cavender", “A.J. Cavender” & "Arthur Cavender") born August 30, 1882 in Licking, Missouri, married Sarah Myrtle Frady ("Sarah Frady") mentioned above, and died in 1959 in Hotchkiss, Colorado. The children of Arthur Carpenter and Sarah Carpenter included a daughter named: Myrtle Lucille Carpenter ("Myrtle Carpenter", “Myrtle Lucille Cavender” & “M.L. Cavender”), mentioned above. James Carpenter owned the Star Hotel on North Main Street in Licking, Missouri, and died in Licking, Missouri about 1895-1896. Apparently, after deserting the army, James Cavender searched in vain for his children by his first marriage and discovered that his daughter Mary E. Cavender (“Mary Cavender”) had married a minister, that his son Frank Cavender was a street-car motorman in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, and that his oldest son William H. Cavender (“William Cavender”) had just died, whereupon he returned to Missouri, changed his name to James Carpenter, and married Frances Bruner in October 1865 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri; 364 Download 8.16 Mb.
