Thornton ("Jane Thornton", "Jane Thonton"?, "Janet C. Thornton"?, "Janet Thornton"’ & “Nancy Thornton”) on December 6, 1827 in Belmont County, Ohio, later married Nancy Click on September 19, 1833 in Belmont County, Ohio, and died about 1880-1910, probably in Belmont County, Ohio. Jane Thornton was born about 1810, was the daughter of James Thornton, and died about 1900-1910. Nancy Click was born about 1812 in either Pennsylvania, or in Virginia according to the 1850 census for Belmont County, Ohio, and died about 1882-1892. According to the 1840 census for Wheeling Township, Belmont County, Ohio, the family of James Cavender and Jane Cavender comprised 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20-30. In 1850, the James Cavender family was living in Colerain Township, Belmont County, Ohio, and apparently by 1860 they had moved from Belmont County, Ohio.337 By his first marriage, James Cavender and Jane Cavender had a son named:

Levi Cavender born in Ohio about 1828, married a Mrs. Hannah Briceland on October 21, 1849, died October 2, 1888 in Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio, and is buried in Union Cemetery in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Hannah Briceland was born about 1827-1828 in Ohio, and died on March 26, 1910, and is buried with her husband, Levi. In 1850, the Levi Cavender family was living in Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio and his family then comprised Levi Cavender age 23 and born in Ohio about 1828, his wife Hannah Briceland Cavender (“Hannah Cavender”) age 23 and born in Ohio about 1827, and Elias Briceland age 17 and born in Ohio about 1833 and was the son of Hannah Briceland by a former marriage.337 & 360 According to the 1870 census for Uniontown, Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio, Levi Cavender was listed as a blacksmith age 44 and born in Ohio about 1826, and his wife was listed as Hannah Cavender age 40 and born in Ohio about 1830. In 1880, they were living in Union Township. Levi Cavender and Hannah Cavender had at least 7 children:

Melinda Cavender born in Ohio about 1850, and may be the Vilinda Cavender who married James Corbin in 1872;

James Cavender born about 1852-1853 and married Lavinia Terrill (“Lavina Terell”?, “Levinia Terrell”, “Lavinia Terrill”?, formerly “Lavina Lynel”? & “Lavinia Lynel”?) on October 17, 1878 in Belmont County, Ohio. On March 5, 1885, Lavinia Cavender of St. Clairsville, Ohio was taken to the home for “enfebbled” minded located in Columbus, Ohio. As related above, in 1880 the James Cavender family was living in the same household with the family of his great grandfather, John Cavender, who was then living in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, Ohio. Apparently, in May 17, 1888, James Cavender was listed as then being in jail. No date was given when he first began serving his term. However, it appears that he was in jail prior to November 10, 1885.360

On September 22, 1883 it was reported that a Issac Terrell born on February 27, 1875 and then age 8 years and 7 months, with Charles Galleger (“George Gallager”) being listed as his father, and with James Cavender of St. Clairsville, Ohio being listed as his step-father was then living in the children’s home in Tacoma, Belmont County, Ohio.

(6) SAMUEL CAVENDER, born about 1812 in Pennsylvania, and married Margaret Ward on November 3, 1836 in Belmont County, Ohio and who was born in Ohio about 1821.360 Although not yet established, he may be the same Samuel Cavender who was listed in the 1840 census as then living in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, Ohio and whose family at that particular time comprised 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 20-30. JOHN CAVENDER #2 line (1760-1837)
John Cavender born in New Castle Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware about 1760, married a Margaret in Lower New Castle County, Delaware in August 1785 by a Parson Edwards, “a settled minister”, and died September 12, 1837. 130 & 351 He was originally drafted in the Revolutionary War in 1777 at the age of 17 while living in Lower New Castle County, Delaware. He later enlisted at Red Lyon Hundred in New Castle County, Delaware under Captain William Rankins and served 3 months in 1778 guarding the shores of Delaware from Fort Penn to New Castle, a distance of 12 miles. In the same year, he was discharged and he and his wife Margaret moved to Cecil County, Maryland where he enlisted under Captain John Crow and First Sergeant Alexander Brown of the Maryland Company. He marched along the lines between Maryland and Pennsylvania to New Brunswick, New Jersey where his Captain and half of his company, including Captain Crow died from "camp fever". He was in the hospital with camp fever and was there when he was discharged. In 1777, he also served as a wagoner, furnishing his own team, under issuing Commissary Churchburg of North Carolina. He may be the same John Cavender that was listed as owing Court Costs in Cecil County, Maryland in 1771317 and the same one who took the so-called “Oath of Fidelity” in Cecil County, Maryland in 1778. 313 & 336 Altogether, he served in the Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina Lines, after which he and his wife moved from Delaware to Maryland to Pennsylvania and then to Crosby Township, Hamilton County, Ohio in about 1818 where lived until he died there on September 12, 1837 at the age of 78 years. According to the 1800 census for New Castle Hundred County, Delaware, the John Cavender family comprised 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26-45. On September 5, 1832 at the age of 72 while then living in Crosby Township in Hamilton County, Ohio, he first applied for a Revolutionary War pension before he died on September 12, 1837. On August 21, 1844, Margaret Cavender, aged 80, widowed, and then living in Brookville in Franklin County, Indiana, applied for a widow's pension as Application No. W9776. In August 1843, Margaret Cavender was living in Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana. The application for pension was issued April 15, 1844 for $20 per month as Certificate No. 5302, 5203 or 2563, but apparently was made effective as of March 4, 1943. The neighbors of John Cavender were Joseph Sater, John McMahan ("John McMahon"?), Adam Rittenhouse, Judge Othneil Looker and Esq. Hopkins. John Cavender and Margaret Cavender had the following children:

Ester Cavender (“Easter Cavender”) who died in infancy in 1785 in New Castle County, Delaware;

John Cavender who also died in infancy in 1787 in New Castle County, Delaware;

Alexander Preston Cavender ("Alexander Cavender" & “A.P. Cavender”) born September 18, 1788 and married Rebecca Gaskele on January 19, 1838, and died in the summer of 1843 and is buried in the Ashbury Methodist Episcopalain Church in Dover, Kent County, Delaware which was built in 1830 with one of the prominent members being Rebecca Cavender. Apparently on May 12, 1824, Alexander Cavender purchased land in the village of New Haven in Crosby Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, which is a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio, and which was founded in 1815. Alexander Cavender was one of the first residents of New Haven in Crosby Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, was an undertaker, and the first postmaster which was established in 1826;

John Cavender, Jr. born on September 1, 1790, married Jane Jones about 1811, served as a private in the War of 1812 in the Volunteer Light Artillery in the Company of Capt. According to Bible records, Emmaline Dalton was born on October 3, 1819, died March 25, 1880, and is buried in the St. George Cemetery in Delaware.Del. Archives, Dover, Del. When the 1860 census was taken, the John Cavender family was than living in Cecilton, Cecil County, Maryland. At that time, a Jennie Cavender, age 26 and born in Delaware, and a Henry Cavender, age 1 year and born in Maryland were both living in the household of the above John Cavender. It is believed that John Cavender and Emaline Cavender (“Emmaline Cavender”?) had 13 children, 5 of which died in infancy and which included:

Martin B. Cavender (“Martin Cavender” & “M.B. Cavender”) born on October 28, 1838 in Delaware;

This may be the same John Cavender who is listed in the 1880 census for Cecil County, Maryland and being 39 years of age, and thus born about 1839/1840, and whose wife was listed as being Amanda Cavender, age 38, and thus born about 1842;
