20.1 abbreviations and symbols general rules 1. The humanities and social sciences tend to use words rather than abbreviations and symbols.
2. Symbols generally come after the number. Exceptions currencies
(e.g. ¥100, €56).
3. Numbers before abbreviations and symbols must be digits (e.g. 7) rather than words (e.g.
seven ).
4. Abbreviations for measurements are not usually followed by a period (.) unless at the end of a sentence. They do have a plural form.
5. Most abbreviations for measurements are all lowercase. Exceptions bytes (e.g. GB, KB micro measurements (mL – microliter, milliliter and temperatures CF. Abbreviations in a series tend to be repeated.
