22.3 grammar Acronyms, like all nouns, respect the normal rules of grammar. If an acronym refers to a countable entity it requires an article when used in the singular.
2. The plural of an acronym
is formed by adding an s. 3. If the last word in the full form of an acronym is plural, then a lowercase
s should be used at the end of the acronym. This rule does not apply to the names of some organizations (e.g. UN – United Nations.
4. Rule 3 applies even if the last
letter in the acronym is an s . Note in some cases, some authors choose to make the plural of
an acronym that ends with an s by using -
es ; for example,
computer scientists use both ASs and
ASes as the acronym for
Autonomous Systems. 5. Even though an acronym may have first
been used in its singular form, this does not mean that it cannot then be used in the plural form. If an acronym is being used in a plural sense,
then it must end in s. 6. Do not put an apostrophe before the plural form.
