Lorenzen, Thomas Albert Ernest Christian

Colin Prentice Ledward (born 1900) [Epsom College 1911-1918. prefect] was the son of Dr M. P. Ledward, of Crumpsall North, Manchester. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and then emigrated to Canungra, Queensland, Australia, where he served as a Surgeon to the New Zealand Shipping Co. No further details known

Brian William Cross (born 1900) [Epsom College 1912-1917. prefect. Captain of Rugby XV] was the son of Dr E. W. Cross, of Leytonstone, Essex. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and then joined the R.A.F. Medical Branch. During the First World War he served as a Pilot in the R.A.F. (1918).

Wynn Rowland Watkin Bonner-Morgan (born 1900) [Epsom College 1916-1919. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Richard Bonner-Morgan, optician, of Cardiff. He received his medical education at Cardiff University and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Worcester Park, Surrey. He was previously Medical Officer at the Sungei Patani Estates Hospital, Malaysia.

George William Keele (born 1900) [Epsom College 1912-1918. prefect. Cricket XI] was the son of Dr David Keele [Epsom College 1884-1887], and brother of Professor Cyril Arthur Keele, F.R.C.P. [Epsom College 1918-1923], and Dr Kenneth David Keele, F.R.C.P. [Epsom College 1923-1927]. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Highbury New Park, London. He was Public Vaccinator for the Highbury District of the Borough of Islington, and Dental Anaesthetist for the Islington and Hoxton L.C.C. Schools Treatment Centres. During the First World War he served as a Cadet Pilot in the R.A.F. (1918), and during the Second World War he served as a Major in the R.A.M.C. (1939-1945).

Michael Claude Hawker Kingdon (born 1900) [Epsom College 1913-1918. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Dr E. O Kingdon, of Holsworthy, Devon. He received his medical education at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and St Mary’s Hospital, before entering general practice in Holsworthy, Devon. During the Second World War he served as a Captain in the R.A.M.C. (1943-1945).

Cyril Dare Cogswell (1900-1972) [Epsom College 1914-1918. prefect] was the son of Dr P. D. Cogswell, of Bromley, Kent. He received his medical education at King’s College Hospital, and went into general practice at Southall, Middlesex. He was previously Medical Officer at the Children’s Heart Hospital, West Wickham, Kent.

John Walker (born 1900) [Epsom College 1914-1918] was the son of Dr W. W. Walker, of Batley, Yorkshire. He received his medical education at Leeds University, and went into general practice at Batley. He was also Honorary Surgeon to the Batley and District Hospital.

Eric Arnold Robert Ennion (1900-1981) [Epsom College 1915-1918] was the son of Dr O. R. Ennion, of Yoxford, Suffolk. He received his medical education at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and St Mary’s Hospital. He initially went into general practice at Burwell, Cambridgeshire, but after the Second World War he gave up medicine to become the first Warden of the Flatford Mill Field Study Centre on the Suffolk Stour (1945-1950). After Flatford, Eric Ennion moved to Monk’s House, Northumberland, which he ran as a Field Study Centre (1950-1961). He was the founder of the British Field Study Centres and, as an outstanding artist of natural history subjects, became the first Chairman of the Society of Wildlife Artists (1964). He was a Council Member of the British Ornithologists’ Union (1959-1962), and Chairman and later Honorary Vice-President of the Society of Wildlife Artists (1964-1975). Although Ennion trained as a doctor, his life-long enthusiasm was for natural history and ornithology in particular. He recorded two episodes from his time at Epsom. “The woods and wide green folds of gorse-cluttered downs swept up to the school walls. With their jays and nuthatches, their bullfinches and sparrowhawks – and all their enchanting butterflies and moths, they drew me as a magnet to a pin.” Nature notes filled the margins of his school books. He recalled one occasion when they were put to literary use. “Crusty [James Wilson, Classics Master (1895-1923)] looked up from the pile of essays on his desk. “What’s a shoveller, Ennion?” “A kind of duck, Sir”. I did not add “of course” but the tone implied it. He tucked his monocle into his wise old wrinkled face: “what’s a syllogism?” “Don’t know, Sir”’. Nobody else in Form IIa knew either and there was no further comment on my ‘Best Day of the Summer Holiday’ essay. We were quits.”

Basil Lyndon Steele (1900-1992) [Epsom College 1910-1919] was the son of Dr Russell Steele [Epsom College 1860-1865]. He received his medical training at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Regent’s Park, London. He was a Freeman of the City of London; Founder of the Medical Policy Association; Vice Chairman of the Social Credit Secretariat, and a Senior Officer in the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
