Activity - Evidence of Evolution
Directions: Answer us based on your new understanding.

a. Do you think anatomy shows that these animals do have a close ancestor? Explain.

b. Are the bones arranged in a similar way in each animal?

Part III Analogous Structures

Directions: Examine the insect wings and the bird wings shown below.

Figure E

Figure D

a. What function do these structures share?

b. How do the structures differ?
c. Do birds and insects share any structural similarities that would suggest they are closely related taxonomically?
I. Some apparently unrelated animals have organs with similar functions yet are very different in structure and form. The wings of insects and the wings of birds have the same function. Both are used for flying. However, their anatomy shows that their wings are very different. They develop in totally different ways. These structures are called analogous structure!

a. Anatomy shows that birds and insects are ____________________ relatives.

b. Did birds and insects develop along the same evolutionary branch?

Part IV Vestigial Structures

I. Gradual changes have occurred through time that have in some cases reduced or removed the function of some body structures and organs. The penguin's wings and the leg bones of snakes are examples of this phenomenon.

The cave fish and minnow shown are related, but the cave fish is blind.

Sheepshead Minnow

To the right is a picture of a Sheepshead minnow. It is hard to see but they have stripes running up and down their sides. The Sheepshead minnow is very fat and deep bodied. Young fish are more slender than larger older specimens. Sheepshead minnows reach a maximum of about 3 inches in length.

Blind cave fish, Astyanax fasciatus exicanus.

II. Living in three dark caves in San Luis Potosi, Mexican blind cave fish have lost their eyes.
